Now in a can.

The beer offers rich amount of vanilla, not necessarily sweet upfront with a hint of extract action going on. Then with some milk stout sweetness, milk chocolate, then onto a roast quality of a stout/porter.

Poured from the tap into a 16 ounce shaker pint.

Look- Black, medium brown frothy head, slightly below average head retention, average lacing, opaque.

Smell- Toasted oats, slight coffee, weak strength of scent.

Taste- Toasted oats, slight vanilla, slight cocoa, slight coffee, medium strength of flavor.

Feel- Between thin and medium body, average carbonation, moderately bitter, moderately creamy.

Overall- Look was black and opaque with slightly below average head retention. The bouquet was dominated by toasted oats, but weak in strength. Flavors were also dominated by toasted oats and I was expecting much more vanilla than I tasted. The feel was thinner than I had expected and there was no silky feel despite being brewed with lactose.

12oz can into a snifter.

A: Dark body with light showing on the edges, off-white head settles into a ring.

S: Roasty, malty, sweet cream and vanilla. Hints of an almost smoky note in the roasted dark malt character.

T: More roasted malt and charcoal, dark-cacao, vanilla bean, hints of bitter coffee, earthy notes.

MF: Creamy medium body, roasty and semi-dry with nice notes of sweetness.

O: A nice sweet stout with non-typical aromas and flavors of roasted malt and bitter earthy coffee.

i like this because its different from the crowd of these in that its not very sweet, instead it retains plenty of its roasted malt bitterness and earthy character, an almost charcoal note running through it that the vanilla seems to have to balance, not the other way around where the sugary desserty vanilla needs a little malt depth to keep it in check. the vanilla is natural in here, but always no more than an accent, maybe a little more forward in the nose than the taste. even with the lactose highlighting it at various times in the trajectory of this, its not too sweet or too much. some dark cocoa notes in the malt, bitter black coffee too, and that really keeps this grounded and balanced. i like the smoothness of the mouthfeel, the very low alcohol for what it is, and the kiss of vanilla that comes back after the swallow. there is even a little english yeast thing going on too here, giving it some additional beer character set against the vanilla taking it over. smart recipe and nice execution. these guys still confuse and intrigue me, they dont seem to do it like everyone else, and i like that, there is an authenticity to their beer and their branding that resonates with me. this is better than many in its field for sure, a drinkable dark beer for this time of year is nice!

This beer was alright but its probably my least favorite of the Iron Horse Brewery beers.
Look: Very dark looking beer as most stouts are. Head was quite dark though there wasn't too much of it.

Smell: Malty with a hint of vanilla.

Taste: I thought it tasted fairly strong. There is a small hint of vanilla. Its a fairly heavy beer.

Feel: It felt fairly heavy, although I don't generally drink stouts. It wasn't super difficult to drink, but its not something you could slam.

Overall: I thought this beer was pretty average overall. There wasn't much that stood out to me about it.

Poured from 12 oz. can into glass.

Look: Extremely dark, can't see through it. Reddish hue on edges. Poured with a moderate head that dissipated quickly.

Smell: Strong vanilla up front, followed by classic roasted and malty scent.

Taste: Vanilla less noticeable than smell, but pleasant at first sip. Subsides to typical stout flavor, pretty mild. Finish is slightly bitter, as expected from a stout. Can't taste any booziness.

Feel: Thin feeling unlike most stouts, no substance to it. Still pleasant though. Smooth and very easy to drink. Light carbonation.

Overall: Good stout. Barely can taste the vanilla but it's a light and easy drinking stout that is enjoyable. With the 4.5% ABV, it is more manageable than some higher octane stouts.

Delicious stout. I am glad the vanilla flavor is not super prominent, in fact if I didn't know what this was, I don't know that I'd recognize the vanilla. Good yummy malt. Not too roasted, relatively light malt. Out the can in eastern cascades.

A gift from my daughter in Washington State. Pours a black color with a foamy tan head that lasts quite a while. Aroma is coffee. Taste is a coffee with a sweet chocolate finish. Good mouth feel; thick and smooth.

Look: 3 finger brown head, black body.

Smell: See below.

Taste: Dark chocolate, nuts, mild roast, a note of vanilla. Slightly disappointed with how little vanilla there is.

Feel: Medium carbonation and body, dry yet with a mildly sweet finish.

From notes taken 02/23/17:

Dark brown to black, seemingly opaque. Dark brown for a head at least, fairly rocky and gelatinous throughout, with great retention. Smoky, roasty sweetness on the nose, nothing too distinct beyond toast after it has sat for a while. Very roasty and smoke-tart beer, with rye toast and black coffee suggestions more subdued and vanilla flavor really only noticeable for me when sloshing it around until carbonation is reduced or in retro-olfaction (along with peppercorn) or saturated palate, but barely. Seems a fuller body, takes a while for CO2 to reach its full effect and even then it is only moderate and sparse though somewhat velvety. Highly astringent.

Poured from a can into a pint glass

Appearance-The beer pours a dark brown, nearly black color with a one finger head of cream colored foam. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading over time to leave a lighter level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the brew is strongest of roasted malt smell mixed with some big latte smells. Along with these aromas comes some other smells of caramel and a bit of a chocolate smell. Overall rather enjoyable.

Taste – The taste begins with a sweet latte flavor mixed with some other tastes of roasted malt and a little bit of vanilla. A bit of an extra coffee surge and some chocolate tastes come toward the middle of the taste, leaving one with a rather sweet mocha latte flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is on the average side in terms of thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is on the higher side. For the lower abv. of the beer the feel is quite exceptionally and is more robust then I would have anticipated, which suits the darker flavors quite well.

Overall – Weighing in at only 4.5 % this beer packs in a good deal of nice roasty-latte like flavor. A great winter time-light abv. brew!!
