Review from notes, visited 2010.

While the selection pails in comparison with relatively close John's Marketplace, I'd have to say the beer is certainly taken care of better than John's. I was able to find some funky Christmas Beers, Scaldis Noel, Samiclaus, etc. A pretty good selection of cheeses, artisan foods, you could put together a pretty good picnic basket. Prices are reasonable, though you may be taking your life into your hands if you try to make a left hand turn across traffic on Barbur. No service to speak of, one of the beer reps helped me out, but no dedicated beer person to speak of when I visited. Glad I visited once, but unless they have something that John's is out of, I probably won't go in again.

Visited the store Sunday on my way home from Seattle, and after going to John's Market Place. Barbur World Foods is an eclectic neighborhood grocer offering an interesting variety of grocery products and beer. Except for a few beers displayed near the checkout stands, the beer is located at the back of the store in a large walk in cooler, quite a large volume and variety. Beer to the right, to the left, in front and in back. Surrounded by beer is fun. Selections are not nearly as comprehensive as John's, but far greater than typical grocery stores and most Whole Foods I've been to. Looks to be some bargains here and there. I noticed they had 2009 Mirror Mirror for $10.99 a bomber compared to $11.99 nearly everywhere else. Located with convenient I-5 access. Service was nonexistent.

Since the last review, the selection at Barbur World foods has gotten even better. Its nothing to write home about, but they do have a lot of good cold brew. The price are reasonable and you are sure to find something you love. Its no John's Market, but its a convenient stop with great food and a moderate selection. A lot better that any other grocery store. I would like to see more bombers, and less of the weird tasting world beers. I'm just not too into japanese and arabian beers. There is not a lot of belgians, but quite a bit from scotland and germany.

Barbur Grocery was recently purchased and is in the process of being changed from a run of the mill if aging grocer to a purveyor of finer items. The name has changed to Barbur World Foods, which I think says a lot about the direction its going. Already the inventory has changed in the food, wine and beer areas to carry a much wider and fancier variety of offerings.

The beer cooler, a walk in lien-to in the back is kept somewhere below 50F. It used to be about 2/3 cheap swill and 1/3 decent micros and imports. The new management has significantly upped the micro/specialty offerings to the point where it is nearly on par with neighboring shops like Market of Choice. I even saw AleSmith available, which is very new to Portland.

The service rating gets knocked because there is never anyone there who seems to know about beer. I take it someone is doing their homework, but its not apparent who. The rest of the staff is friendly though, so I don't mean to insinuate that its bad. I'm merely referring to the beer service.

I'm quite pleased about the increase in offerings because this place is extremely convenient for us, plus its going to have a regular grocery available too. So far, I've not had a single beer from them that was off or too old or skunky. Competitor John's Marketplace on the other hand often has problems with beers that have been over exposed to the light or on the shelf too long. We'll see if that remains true.
