Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Very dark reddish-brown with very foamy tan head and some impressive lacing.

Smell: Caramel, light roasted malts, some light tea and floral hop notes.

Taste: Caramel, chocolate and light roasted malts, with minor coffee and English hop accents. Subdued but complex and very tasty.

Feel: Low carbonation, medium body that is extremely smooth for so low abv, very nice drying finish.

Drinkability: Excellent Brown Porter that shows how good a beer can be while still being low in alcohol and fairly restrained.

Pours deep auburn with large bubbles in the tan head and leaves no ring or lacing inside the pint glass. Aroma presents chocolate and little coffee with subtle hints of dark cherries and sugared raisins. A roasted flavor of chewy chocolate nougat, nuts, and coffee again. These flavors help accentuate the medium body and soft mouthfeel that balance the finish of bitter hops and dense malt. Famous Taddy is a very enjoyable and flavorsome benchmark porter from a brewery rich in English tradition and history.

Appearance: Pours an extremely dark, opaque reddish-brown. A light tan head starts out a full two fingers thick and exhibits good retention and lacing.

Smell: Subtle and soft aroma of buttery diacytel, faint roasted grains, and a hint of green hops.

Taste: A bit stiff with a fair amount of caramel and buttery diacytel. The slightly bitter, roasted grain flavor is in the background and it adds an acidic undercurrent as well as a small amount of harshness. There's a touch of green hops, but they're restrained and mellow. A bit of alcohol on the tail end. Thin, lingering roasted aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Medium in body with a sharp, dry mouthfeel that's a bit prickly on the tongue.

Drinkability: Pretty good for the style. Due to the somewhat harsh, bitter undercurrent, I don't think I could drink it all night. However, it is a classic that never fails to please. This was probably the freshest bottle I've ever had of it...

Looks how a porter should. Color is right in between a dark stout and a brown ale. Tan head sits atop the beer and doesn't budge. Aroma is weak and doesn't let the beer truly show itself. This beer has so many flavors that I had trouble picking up on all of them. I noticed a prune sweetness up front. Espresso comes in slightly but then backs out. Chocolate takes control shows itself in a powerful way. Hops and an acidic quality are there just before the finish. The finish is of roasted nuts and espresso and lingers for awhile. Quite a treat!

550 ml bottle poured into a mug. At long last I am trying this classic. Dark chalky brown, near-black, with a moderate amount of rich creamy tan head rather like sponge toffee. Rich nose of semi-sweet chocolate, freshly turned soil, brown sugar, treacle, and a faint whiff of red berries perhaps. Complex but not overbearing aroma notably in its earthy features. Palate is similarly earthy and vaguely sour, like cacao mixed with fruity molasses. Caramel develops on both nose and palate over the course of a few sips. Little in the way of caustic or rough bitterness despite the earthiness, which I'm thinking is hop-derived in part. Some cola-like brown spice. Smooth creamy mouth feel and moderate to thick bodied, with more of that odd chalky sourness in the semi-dry finish. Lingering caramel and raisin sweetness. Diacetyl from those those open square fermenters. Some of the written descriptions of this beer I've encountered may overstate this brew's "smoky sour" character but certainly this feature is present. I also get considerable sweetness of both dark and fruity varieties. Classic brew indeed and somehow light and mellow enough to enjoy in reasonable quantity.

What a great looking beer, so dark and the head is big and beautiful and sticks around with some lacing.

dark smell, toasty. chocolate.

Such a full taste, so complex. flavors like chocolate, toast, bacon, charcoal, spices are present. It is also bitter as well. This porter is nicley balanced!

It goes down easy, it is not heavy, light to medium body. carbonation is definatly there but not over powering.

All though this is extremely deliscious I would say that more than two would be hard to drink. The intense and dark flavors make this more of a slow sipper!

Poured from a 16.9oz brown bottle, is a dark black you can't see through with a 3 finger creamy tan head on aggressive pour. Aroma is very chocolaty, and the taste initially comes off as a lot of bittersweet chocolate. Halfway into the glass it becomes a little more roasty and acidic. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and very smooth. Carbonation isn't too high and enough to make it interesting.

Appearance – Opaque and a deep brown. Tan bubbly head arises and a little lacing is left on the glass.

Smell – Roasted malt is prevalent with a touch of sourness. Some sweet malt is there too with coffee and some barley.

Taste – Starts off coffee flavored and moves on to a barley taste. Roasted malts and bitter hops are there as well.

Mouthfeel – Low carbonation and a nice full body make for a nice feel.

Drinkability – Great. A nice Porter that is tasty and reliable as any.

Pours a deep, clear reddish-brown, with loads of ruby around the edges, and a three finger medium tan head that leasts well and leaves copious lacing. Smell is intense, fruity and sweet, with grapes and plum mixing nicely with toffee notes, and a touch of roasted bitterness as well. Taste is heavy on the coffee, but the fruit still comes through, as does a caramel and chocolate note in the finish. Mouthfeel is a bit flat and undercarbonated, but has good body, and drinkability is quite good. Very good, all things considered, but can't match Fuller's in my books.

Pours out a really dark black with 1 finger of tan foam. Lacing is slight.
Aroma is dark chocolate/coffee and cigar.Sweet malt and sugary yeast. Caramel and candy toffee.Slight fruitiness like raisin or plum.
Taste is chocolate coffee then a sweetness of malt washes the tounge. Kind of a whiskey initial flavor then the coffee bean hits you and the malt sweetness takes you to the hop black bitterness.
Mouthfeel is pretty watery here. While this is a good porter, there are porters that leave more flavor on the palate.
I could drink a bunch of these so I will rate it high on the Drinkability Scale.

I really don't have anything but positive things to say about the Sam Smith beers I've tried. Taddy Porter is one of the best of its style, you can't go wrong with one of these.

A great, classy looking bottle with gold foil. Poured into a pint glass, color is very dark brown with a little bit of light seeping through the edges. Tan head is creamy and frothy, but doesn't stick around long.

Smell is pretty minimal at first. I should have let this warm up longer, because it really picks up after sitting room temps for 30 minutes or more. Faint roasty malts give way to robust coffee and molasses when warmer.

Do yourself a favor and let this porter warm up some before enjoying it. Flavors definitely increase quite a bit once warmer. Very smooth, pleasing dark roasted malts dominate, with a little acidic coffee and molasses sweetness. Nicely balanced and smooth, mouthfeel could be a bit more full and flavors be a bit stronger.

But, this is a porter and not a stout. I think it really sets the bar for the style, not going overboard and pretending to be a stout, while still being a force to be reckoned with. Drinkability is way high, the only limiting factor is that it's kind of expensive. Worth the try, highly recommended.

Poured this 12 oz. undated, clear bottle into a Samuel Smith tulip glass. Body was an opaque brown black color. The head was three fingers of tan froth, leaving minimal lacing.

Smell was understated. Grainy, maltiness. Chocolate undertones. Slightly medicinal and faintly ashy.

Taste was a nice blend of light, zesty hoppiness and sweet grainy toastiness. Dry tartness kept me wanting another swallow.

Mouthfeel was smooth. Body was thin to medium. A classic beer.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep brown color, with a large beige head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is of coffee, dark fruit, roasted malts and a touch of hops.

T: The taste is malty as you would expect with strong flavors of coffee and dark fruit. There are touches of vanilla and chocolate with a mild hops presence. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and very smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, very good representation of style, this is a nice porter with a good complexity that is worth drinking for a long time.

Pours the darkest of browns, pretty much black, with a three-finger mocha head that fades slowly to a thin cap. Random lacing down the glass.

Smell is dark malts, cocoa powder, roasted coffee beans, and some dark fruits.

Taste is bittersweet chocolate, cocoa powder, some tart dark fruits, and lightly roasted coffee.

Mouthfeel is on the lighter side of medium. Very smooth.

Drinkability is pretty high. Went well with a grilled steak, and was nice on its own after dinner.

Pours a deep dark brown, almost black color with one finger of fluffy coffee colored head, retention is average.

The scent is of coffee, roasted malt, some notes of chocolate.

The taste is of burnt coffee, roasted malts, notes of vanilla, fruit, some dark chocolate.

Full bodied, smooth and a little chewy, moderate carbonation.

This was a good porter, nice balanced flavor, not easy to drink more than 1 or 2 of these.

Samuel Smith really shows what British beers can do, at least the ones imported to the U.S. They have some great beers, and here's the next one in the lineup for me.

A: A heavy pour yields a huge 3+ finger head that quickly settles in almost upsidedown waterfall, but not the same as a nitrous. A rich thick creamy head slowly subsides but very slowly, and leaves a lacing as it does. Super dark brown colored beer with just a hint of light coming through.

N: I could smell it quite a bit on the heavy pour. Lots of malts and sweet brown sugar. A heavy nose of roasted malts and dark malts. Added to that are some sweet brown sugar, and hints of molasses and a touch of nuttiness. A slight creamy lactose aroma and hint of chocolate milk. I even think I get a hint of cinnamon. A delicious nose with a really nice lightly sweet malty brown sugar.

T: Rich creamy malts to start. Some lactose with hints of chocolate malt give it a chocolate milk feel. More roasty flavors, with a touch of coffee, a little acidity and bitterness from the roast give it a slight harshness. It's semi sweet, but also a nice bitterness from both the roast and perhaps a touch of hops. Pretty smooth and creamy. A slight touch of nuttiness and cinnamon. Some sweet brown sugar and molasses, but not as much as the nose.

M: Creamy, smooth, and luscious with the medium body but seems a little watery for what I expected, and lower but good for the style carbonation.

F: Semi bitter on the finish with the roasty bitterness. Dries off a little, but it's not too sweet on the finish either. It's more creamy too, with lingering lactose finish. Some of the roasty coffee bean flavor also sticks around on the finish adding to the bitterness. I get a hint of raisin and brown sugar as well late on the finish. The bitterness seems to get a little overwhelming for what it should be at least, or perhaps I'm too in love with how luscious and creamy the oatmeal stout is.

pours deep brown with good clarity at the edges. a nice tan head forms, dropping fairly fast and leaving a bunch of lace as it falls.

aroma is good. dark and milk chocolate. coffee. biscuit and lightly toasted whole wheat bread. bit of cracker. light alcohol. touch of dark fruit.

taste is good. dark and milk chocolate. a lighter roast coffee. lightly toasted whole wheat bread and biscuit. cracker. touch of grain. lightly fruity english character, leaning a bit toward dark fruit. bit of alcohol. medium-low bitterness level. light herbal character. a touch woody.

mouthfeel is good. medium body. medium carbonation level.

drinkability is great. nice balance. a good example for the english porter style.

Pours a rich black with ruby highlights color. Huge tan head that holds strong at one inch with thick lacing on the glass. The smell is pronounced and very pleasant. Mostly malty but a hint of bitter chocolate as well. The taste is primarily malt with some bitterness. Very enjoyable taste with no "chalky" aftertaste or any other unpleasant flavor. The mouthfeel is a little thin (I may be comparing this to the Outmeal Stout which has an incredibly rich mouthfeel) but not watery. I enjoyed this beer and would consider it a good session beer or something to savor on my deck (where I had this one).

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a nonic pint glass.

Appearance is deep dark brown, almost black that allows a tiny amount of light through topped with a fluffy tan colored two finger head that slowly recedes into a small cap.

Smell is of roasted malts and coffee with a toasted quality to it. There is also a vague hint of bakers chocolate in there as well.

Taste is just like the aroma, with nice flavors of coffee and roasted malt upfront. As it warms a bit more of sweetness comes as well as the small hint of chocolate. It finishes with a mild and pleasant bitterness.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and fairly smooth with a light amount of carbonation.

Drinkability is pretty good. Its easy drinking and fairly flavorful making it a good choice for a session porter. Its a nice example of the style and I would certainly have it again.

Samuel Smith's, The Famous Taddy Porter pours dark with a two finger light brown head. It has a malty roasted aroma with hints of chocolate. This beer sure does have a nice mouthfell. Very smooth to me. It starts malty and sweet and finishes with a roasted chocolate and coffee flavor. Carbonation is right for the style. Seems to be very widely available across the fruited plain. The only negative for me is the somewhat high price tag.
