poured from the 550mL bottle into a stout glass.

appearance: almost black, but appears a ruby brown when held to a bright light. very little light gets through. very small light tan head that fades rapidly.

smell: toffee, sweet malt, a very light hint of caramel.

taste: sweet, biscuity. light caramel and toffee flavors. very slight roastiness, almost like coffee but not quite as bitter.

feel: dry, slick, medium-bodied but leaning a bit towards lighter. it feels almost a little watery. moderate carbonation.

overall: it's a good porter. i quite like the flavor but i think it would benefit from feeling a little thicker.

Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass. Rich dark brown with a brief beige head and good lacing. I love the smell. Sweet dark berries with a bit of chocolate. This is carried to the taste along with flavors of sweet licorice and a hint of coffee. A classic I have had before but only getting around to reviewing it now.

1 Pint bottle split between two people.
Poured like beer, with a dark opaque color & little carbonation.
Smell is sour & earthy.
Feel is a bit watery for a porter.
Taste is smooth, feels like a traditional English style porter, with a sour, woodsy flavor like it comes from wooden casks.
Overall, Samuel Smith has much better flavors than this one. We would not recommend it, but wouldn't say no if offered.

The beer is pitch black with a foamy head that thinned out quickly. I hate saying it smells like a typical porter but it does. There is a mix of dark fruits and coffee. The taste is bready and then has a lingering metallic bitterness. The beer also felt a little watery.

Dark brown in color with ruby highlights and a 4 finger dark tan head becoming chunky with thick, sticky lacing.

Aroma of sweet malts and dark fruits. Yeasty like sourdough.

Taste is mostly dry with just a hint of sweet malts. Slightly fruity with tangy and roasted notes.

Moderately full in body with light carbonation. Feel is creamy and somewhat astringent.

An easy drinker. Smooth overall.

Bottle dated SD27Q1 (Apr. 27, 2017). Imperial Nonic pint.

A: pours black, with some light just barely penetrating when shined straight up to the light. Two fingers of super foamy light tan head. Outstanding lacing.

S: English yeast to the max! Smells like that German sprouted rye bread you get at some health food stores. Sour and roasted. Yeast smell expresses as fruity berry-like Ethiopian coffee. Sidamo. The bottle says "tangy" and that is absolutely right. It's so English it's like it's a parody of itself.

T: damn. Arrives with a bready, slightly tangy, malty, roasted, creamy, richness. Transitions to a thick mild roasty note; transitions at the end to a mildly bitter, earthy English hop bitterness. This is nothing short of exquisite.

M: thicker end of midweight, light slickness. Fairly high carbonation keeps it dare I say it- refreshing.

O: this defines the style. I am at a loss for words with how much I like this beer. A symphony of balance. Not too sweet; mild, earthy hops; decided roast that does not overpower; expressive yeast character. Unforgettable.

Postscript: I broke out the decoder ring, and figured out this is nearly a year old. If it is this good now, just imagine fresh! Sigh.

All about subtlety in this beer: notes of molasses and licorice perfectly balanced with the malty and nutty and a perfect medium body pleasantly smooth.

I find it VERY difficult not to gulp this beer and move straight to another of the same.

A very nice beer. Weirdly has almost no smell. A stout with taste and a great feel. Their Oatmeal and Chocolate Stouts have more taste and are more complicated drinks. If you want to drink a lot of Samuel Smith's, maybe try this beer, but the Extra Stout is sublime yet also easy to drink a lot of.
