This was the my first beer of 2009. The world famous porter from Ye Olde Samuel Smith Brewery in Yorkshire. The initial pour into my shiny imperial pint glass is thick beige lather that sits .... and begins to sink .... very .... slowly. Let it settle; at which the imbiber is confronted by a black liquid impervious to natural light. The lacing is heavy and the subsequent clingage vast.

The nose can detect sweet notes of bubble gum and banana; the palate, a toasty malt blanket that covers the tongue and, yet, is surprisingly malt. The body is balanced without being cloyingly sweet or bready.

Taddy looks heavy, but is not; it is a mild bodied porter that provides for an elegant quaff before the manor's fireplace or a refreshing bracer following a fox hunt on the moor. So, here's to Catherine and Heathcliff. Who's your Taddy?
