Brewed with well water (the original well at the Old Brewery, sunk in 1758, is still in use, with the hard well water being drawn from 85 feet underground); best barley malt, yeast and aromatic hops; fermented in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’ to create a relatively dry ale with rich nutty colour and palate of beech nuts, almonds and walnuts.

Presentation: 12 oz clear bottle that has gold foil on top, no freshness date to be found.

Appearance: Deep reddish brown chestnut in colour with a caked on lace.

Smell: Nutty aroma ... a mix of sweet and grain with a hint of butterscotch.

Taste: Smooth with a creamy textured mouth feel coming from the medium body. Sweet up front then leaning more towards dryish nutty finish. There is an underlying buttery flavour from the Yorkshire yeast and a sufficing hop bitterness that seem to do a good job of putting the missing pieces together for this brew.

Notes: Truly one of the best brown ales in the world ... this is the cast and mold for lots of brewers trying to come up with a nut-brown ale. The lasting nutty finish leaves a pleasing hazelnut or walnut aftertaste.

Strongly sweet and molasses-y aroma. Rapidly dissipating head. Clear dark amber. Mouthfeel is somehow both light and syrupy. Very little aftertaste. Delicious

poured from a 550mL bottle into a half pint glass. pours dark maroon to light brown with a big khaki colored head. amaretto and a slight nutty chocolate on the nose. taste follows. it’s simple but it’s fully flavored, especially for 5%. medium-full mouthfeel. finishes a little watery. pretty classic nut brown.

Chestnut brown with dense off-white head, good retention, rings of lacing
Smells like toasted nuts and raisins
Tastes like toasted hazelnuts, cocoa, and raisins
Medium bodied and appropriately carbonated, almost goes down too easy
Nice easy drinker for cooler nights
