Pours a brilliant golden-orange with a rather pathetic head. Almost non-existent with faint retention and minimal lace.

The nose has a delightful note of butterscotch dripping over the nice biscuity malt character. Hops are fresh and floral, adding further touches of meyer lemon.

The palate is bright and crisp, with more of that buttery, biscuity malt. Minimal hops but enough to be well balanced, and the mouthfeel has plenty of weight for its overall lightness.

This really grew on me as it opened up. The butterscotchy, buttery biscuit flavors were wonderfully executed and a nice change of pace from the lagers I've had recently.

From Latiendadelacerveza. In Teku glass. Playing Avernum 2. I suppose this is as good as euro pale lagers can be. Clean and refreshing maltyness with plenty of grassy bitterness but still dull and watery

Its great to see such a renowned ale producer like Samual Smiths produce such a top notch lager.Poured great with nice golden color, with freash aroma of bread and even a little minerally? The hop presence really comes through on this but there is a malty backbone.Very easy to drink, very high quality will again for sure.

Appearance – This one is a beautiful, bright straw color with big carbonation bubbles and a good, foamy, clean-looking head.

Smell – The grain here is terrific and very strong. It is smoothed nicely by a light, refined sugar compliment.

Taste –This is American grain at its best. The rich, full flavor is incredibly smooth and clean. The light sweet finish brings up the rear of the flavor profile. Nice.

Mouthfeel – This light to medium-bodied Lager is very refreshing. I like the light carbonation as well.

Drinkability – This is a classic. Why can’t the macros do Lager like this?

Update – I originally review this with an ’04 vintage so thought I’d give it another crack with an ’06. I’d say definitely lighter than medium-bodied for sure, but otherwise this is just the way I remember it. I have a few of these over the course of a year, especially when the winter weather first breaks. It’s a great way to celebrate spring’s arrival.

This is a pleasant, unassuming beer. It is yellow-orange in color with a fairly thick white head. It has a sweet, fruity odor, mostly of apples (almost a cany apple smell). The taste is sweet, mildly fruity, with a little caramel there too. A nice beer, but not outstanding.

Presentation: Great big 550ml custom brown Victorian pint bottle (a real pint), with old-style labeling. No freshness stamp. Organically Certified brew.

Appearance: Beer pours great, leaving a hodge-podge of different bubble sizes in a pure white, foam lace of a head. Colour is a clear, bright, pale yellow.

Smell: Clean and crisp nose, with light fruity, grain, floral and metallic aromas. Delicately aromatic.

Taste: A rich malty lager with a pleasant sweetness that is balanced, and complemented, by a mildly lime-like hop bitterness and floral flavour. Light, complex fruity notes, and a touch of watery grape-like character. Crisp, semi-dry, but an overall smooth mouthfeel and a firm body. Tame metallic and fresh bread notes pull through as the beer warms. Finishes just a tad dry with some trace grain and metallic flavours.

Notes: I can't remember a cleaner, fresher tasting imported lager. It's absolutely outstanding, and organic which is a big plus. I hope others follow suit and we all see more organically brewed beers worldwide.

Thanks to Merchant Du Vin for the fresh sample.

the wife bought this for me, i much enjoy their imperial stout, so she must've figured this would be a match as well...

well, it's good, but not as good as their imp. stout, though we're more into ales and less lagers, this is nonetheless quite a nice lager.

onto the review:

A: a pale, golden yellow with a fluffy white head that's fairly thick when i did the entire 500ml bottle, the head leaves quickly, but there is lacing throughout the drink. it's above average, but the head vanishes faster than some other lagers i've tried as of late.

S: it's not strong, what's there is a fruity smell with some malt, maybe my nose wasnt working properly tonight... there was nothing offensive about the smell, just nothing special either.

T: tastes quite nice, very clean and crisp with a nice fruity taste with barley taking control mid-way through, very enjoyable. not bitter in the least and again, nothing offensive.

M: it's body thickens up a little bit better than most lagers and feels good going down.

D: quite a smooth drink, with a good taste and feel, i could honestly care less about the appearance and smell if it were left in the bottle.

i would reccomend trying this one out, it's not bad, but i'm a ale/stout guy so it's not my fancy, but good for what it is.

Pours from brown 12 oz bottle into pint glass. Nice golden hue with lots of carbonation. Aroma is grains with faint floral and some pleasant citrus. Taste is rather grainy malts with just enough hops to keep you interested. Very delicately balanced. An excellent lager and a perfect summer session candidate.

550 ml brown bottle with no freshness date. Sparkling clarity with a fluffy white that stick to the glass just fine.

Grassy and sweet aroma of malt with a light herbal hop in the back.

Easy going malt character, moderate body and carbonation. Mellow hoppiness that reaches the palate with more flavour than bitterness. Lots of grain on the tongue with a lightly sweet finish.

Its good to know that there are good organic beers out there, as for buying this again it is more of a novelty item. No great shake here, just a good drinking lager.

Slim 12 ounce bottle w/o freshness info. Pours quite light golden amber and very clear. Soft white head, retentive at the 1/8 of an inch level and leaving scattered lace upon a more then gentle swirl. The nose I pick up is of some grass, and lemony/floral mild hops. Pleasant and easy drinking. For the style its got generous hope bite up front riding over an undercoating of soft and friendly malts. Better then average interest here, nice beer to try out on your unfortunate macro swilling amigos. Bring on the spicy foods as this one has the crispness and bite to "cut through" the heat and fat. Worthy offering, dare I say "one of my favorite Euro Pale Lagers"

Purchased in Japan, best before 2010年1月, although it may have spent some serious time on shipping containers before getting to me. Label differs from the one pictured - it says "Organic Lager" on the green banner, not "Organically Produced Lager Beer".

Pours with a very excitable head, but it isn't excessively carbonated - many fine bubbles instead. Head retention is moderate, and the beer is pale yellow in colour. Lacing all over the glass. The head retention is surprising - it pours like a beer that's all frothy to begin with, and subsides to total flatness. Despite the head retention, there isn't too much classiness about the look of this yellow lager.

Smell is a little odd, not quite skunky, more like old yeast a bit. Can't really clarify any better than that, as the beer definitely appears filtered, but there is a weird 'off' smell to it. There is a slight grassy hop freshness but this is overpowered by the odd earthy mushroom-like smell.

There's a potent sweetness on the palate that tastes like this bottle hasn't been handled well. This may be part of the reason for the poor sample, but I'm sure it's not the only reason - the yeasty off-smell which is also present on the tongue is not indicative of too much time spent in sunlight or rocky seas. Despite this, the beer is not as undrinkable as it sounds - it's quaffable, just very uninteresting and a little cloying. Gentle but fresh hops are evident, but carbonation is relatively low and this affects the mouthfeel. It's quaffable enough not to be awful, but it's definitely below par.

Mouthfeel is lame because of the low carbonation. I can detect the oiliness of the hop oils which isn't pleasant, and if this beer had more guts to it, more life, it would be more fun to drink.

Drinkability: even on a hot summer's day I'd rather have something with either more body or more carbonation and refreshingness. This has neither.

Appearance: 1/2 head, gold in color, clear, high carbonation

Smell: honey and grass

Taste: honey, grain, and grass

Mouthfeel: medium-high carbonation, medium-light bodied, sweet with a slightly bitter and dry backbone

Overall: Very solid and clean English lager. No frills here, but certainly sessionable. Exceptional for the style. I will get this again if not just for the clean finish.

A: Deep gold with a big creamy white head that stuck around for the whole drink. Lacing all the way down the glass.

A: Nice pale malt aroma, grainy and breadlike. There is a delicate earthy and slightly floral hop aroma

T: Light malty sweetness, followed by actual malt flavors. There is a slight unbuttered popcorn character here. wonderfully balanced hop bitterness. earthy, piney flavors coming from the hops. This is one of the cleanest beers I can remember drinking.

M: Medium light, clean, dry, and crisp. super refreshing

D: You can't get any more drinkable than this. Perfect balance of malt and hops, clean, dry, well attenuated and just plain good!

Appearance: Deep golden color , with a 2 inch head of white bubbly foam , a nice lace left on the glass.

Smell: clean but rich malts , bit of straw/hay , herbal and almost flowery hop aroma.

Taste: biscuity and clean malt flavors , slight straw , hops are are on the grassy/herbal side , very slight dryness, grain.

Mouthfeel: medium body , slight dryness to the finish.

Drinkability: A very drinkable English lager. Flavor focus on the clean and tasty , paler malts. Well worth a try if you like lagers.
