Brewed with well water (the original well, sunk in 1758, is still in use with the hard water is drawn from 85 feet underground), the gently roasted organic chocolate malt and real organic cocoa used in this ale impart a delicious, smooth and creamy character, with inviting deep flavours and a delightful finish - this is the perfect marriage of satisfying stout and luxurious chocolate that will lead to smiles and refills. Samuel Smith's brews in traditional coppers, uses stone 'Yorkshire Squares' for fermentation, and ships every bottle from the brewery with great pride.

I usually shy away from beers with this ABV level because I tend to enjoy bigger beers, especially when it comes to stouts. With that being said I still occasionally pick this up because it is the best chocolate beer around as far as I am concerned. Flavor is all chocolate. Do you self a favor and add a bottle or two into a pot of chili.

Not a huge stout fan, but this is a wonderful beer. Nice balance of chocolate and smooth stout taste. Has a nice heft on the palate, too.

We were wanting so much more than this. Samuel Smith, why have you forsaken us?
The beer is dark, & opaque, with a little carbonation that dies down quickly.
It smells of very sweet & delicious chocolate. It tastes the same, but the sweetness becomes a bit overbearing as time goes on, with a strong "natural flavors" aftertaste that we were hoping to avoid.
This beer was remembered fondly from years back, not sure if we got an odd batch or if memory has added grandeur to it.

I really like everything about it, as far as actually drinking it goes. I also used it in a pot of chili and it was FANTASTIC. Between that and a small amount of cocoa powder, it was spicy and meaty with great chocolate flavor as well. Would HIGHLY recommend.

Dark pour with scents of chocolate. Slight foam head. Smooth, not heavy on the tongue. I enjoyed thoroughly and will have again. I enjoy beers with a rimmed pint glass...and this would be anytime with caramel or chocolate rim.

Pours dark brown with a medium mocha head which looks slightly overactive at first then dies down moderately quickly to a thin covering which remains. Aroma has a faint hint of chocolate to go along with some burnt malt. The first moment of the first sip offers a quick pleasing chocolate sensation which almost immediately shows itself as being too sweet. Malt is dominated by the sweetness which remains throughout the sip. Mouthfeel is smooth & full & the highlight of this beer, which again is just too sweet to earn a higher score.
