Sampled from 18.7oz bottle in pint glass.

Appearance: pours a very thick beige colored frothy head which falls very slowly. Moderate lacing left behind on glass. Nearly opaque dark reddish-brown.

Aroma: chocolate to the max! Roasted chocolate malt, cocoa, with milk sweetness and a mild earthy hops in the background.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and silky with a somewhat wet finish.

Flavor: similar to the aroma, but the chocolate is not quite as overwhelming. There is a better balance of the milk sweetness and dry, earthy hops to accompany the chocolate and cocoa flavors.

Overall: another extremely good offering from Samuel Smith.

If this was a gemstone, it's trying ever so hard to be onyx, but achieves black garnet instead. The dark appearance is almost imperceptibly translucent with deep crimson highlights. A thin, tan head of fine carbonation lingers for only a moment, before leaving a small ring around the edge. No lacing. Based on the fluidity of the pour, and the subsequent swirl of the glass, it foretells a relative lack of body. Chocolate cookie wafers and sweet vanilla creme scents immediately emanate. It's a veritable oreo sandwich. The first sip is bursting with chocolate flavor. A mouthful of dark and semi-sweet chips against a backdrop of subtle orange citrus hop. The touch of tart bitterness keeps it balanced and refreshing. A bit of chocolate-drizzled biscotti in the finish. There's a tame complimentary roast and authentic cocoa flavor that marries well with a mineral water foundation. Delightful. As expected, the mouthfeel is medium-thin, a touch watery, but quenching and delicious. This is a beer you can savor or gulp in equal measure. Perhaps the greatest chocolate dessert beer I've ever had.
