Grabbed this one at Popeye in Tokyo, and I enjoyed it a lot more than the past two reviewers, so I would presume that age has worked some wonders on this one.

Light mahogany pour with one of those beautiful wispy heads that barleywines sometimes produce. The aroma is of port and caramel along with bittering hops. The flavour is not that sweet (it sounds like the residual sugar content has gone down quite dramatically). The predominant feature is the vinous quality of the taste, with honey and port playing key supporting roles, before transitioning to a warming alcohol finish. The mouthfeel was full and chewy, like a very light caramel, and it complimented the flavour profile very well. I found this to be a first-rate barleywine and I wish I had easy access to this back in Toronto.

also tried recently at Popeye┬┤s in Tokyo

A - Color was a slightly translucent neon straw color, not burgundy at all, with pretty white whispy cloud head and good enough lacing

S - Somewhat simple. Sour honey and light hoppy tones. Wish I could elaborate more

T - Was expecting more from a barley wine. Overall complexity was low. Honey sourness and caramel sweetness and texture were big. Some small hoppy flavors but was kind of hoping for more estery goodness

M - By far the most memorable part of this beer. Is is thick and viscous. Like cough syrup or motor oil. It pours and trickles down the throat stopping to take pictures along the way. Thick bodied, no alcohol burn. Chewy and delicious like malt taffy

D - Pretty nice would enjoy this on any cold day and quite a few warm days. Would imagine it pairs well with spicy food and cheeses.

Had at Beer Belly in Osaka, Japan.

A - Dark red body with small to no head.
S - Light tabacco aroma with hints of dark fruit.
T - Slightly sweet, ever so slightly bitter (bitterness is more of a burned fruit bitterness). Again light notes of dark fruit.
M - They named the beer appropriately in calling it Heavy Heavy, because this beer is the heaviest beer I have had in recent memory. Next to no carbonation.
D - This beer took me a hour to drink, and I was in a hurry to finish it.

Appearance: Dense and thick but not opaque, pours into a snifter with a loud "glug glug." Apple cidery amber-brown with virtually no head.

Smell: Extremely fruity and vinous, with notes of apples, grape juice, Mandarin oranges, honey, and dates. Mildly spicy hops meld perfectly with the malts and yeast, all of which pile on layers of dense, estery sweetness, with the 8.5% ABV just barely peeking out from underneath.

Taste: Wow that's sweet. Loads of raw sugar, brandy, fruit juice, and some rummy tropical notes. Hops and alcohol add just the slightest edge of bitterness and spice to counter the sugar. But not enough, in my opinion.

Mouthfeel: Very nearly flat. And very thick. This does not help to lighten up the beer's flavor much at all.

Drinkability: Heavy heavy indeed. But to what end?
