During a terrible snow and cold freeze of early February 2007, I did a white-knuckler western Michigan loop consisting of the top-rated brewpubs in Western Michigan. The trip began in the southwest corner at the Livery in Benton Harbor, up to New Holland in Holland, over to The Hideout, Founders, and BOB in Grand Rapids. Individual reviews are below and my rankings from a total experience are New Holland, The Hideout, The Livery, Founders, and BOB.

My perspective is based on visits to almost 200 brewpubs across North America. I’m an avid homebrewer and craft-beer drinker but no means an expert on the contest judging of beers. I know good beer when I taste it.

As indicated in other reviews, this really is off the beaten path but worth the visit if you're in the area. Going in to my visit to Grand Rapids, I was looking forward to Founders with this as a secondary. As it turned out, I prefered the beers and could argue the atmosphere over Founders. When I arrived at 5:30 on a Tuesday, the brewer (in his boots) was serving beer to three post men who were on their was to a good time. The bar is small and cozy and I quickly got in on a discussion with two locals next to me.

I had the (amarillo) IPA, a taste of the Hefe and Rye, and a full Hazlenut stout. All were excellent. The Hazlenut stout is worth writing home about. Around 6:30, the brewer's wife came in with their kids for a shift change. While they were nice, it took a while to warm up to them and they did try to socialize. It turns out he worked packaging for Bells during college and then brewed at a place called Big Buck in Michigan. In any event, he's brewing some very good beers (and also wines which I did not taste).

Went to Hideout Brewing Company a few weeks ago. It really is a little hole in the wall, but it's a pretty good atmosphere, wasn't crazy busy, and had video games & darts upstairs. They have free bags of chips & pretzels around the bar. Bartender was a little rude, but I think that's just the vibe they're going for. I'll definitely go again at some point.

Very unique place. Old video games upstairs and some off the wall beers. Quality isn't up there with founders but not many breweries are. You will definitely wonder if you are heading to the right place. Worth checking out and bombers to go are very reasonably priced. $5-$7 for everything

Awesome place that is a literal hideout. Dive bar with a huge selection of average to below average beer. Really like the low key vibe.

Just a cool place to go and have some really well crafted beers.
