A very hoppy bitter beer one must know what they are getting into. It is also high in alcohal content in the 7 or 8% range. Its a very hard hitting beer which tastes floral at first and quickly turns into a barage of hops. Not a ton of complexity to the beer but it is still one of my favorite over the top hoppy beers. enjoy

This beer should probably be re-classified as a double IPA, instead of an American Strong Ale. Even the bartender described it to me tonight as a "double-barrel" IPA. Interesting term, double-barrel. Still, I think we get the point. It's a big beer.

Brought from the tap by the bartender, the Chaos appears a dirty red/brown color, with a thin film of head on top. Lots of good looking lace. A healthy-looking beer for sure. The nose is small, with faint pine and citrus (mostly grapefruit, but some lemon). A bit dull, but not bad, just muted. Faint scent of dense, sweet malts as well. The taste is much bolder, though, presenting the best of both hop and malt worlds. Good piney hop flavor, and dense malt character balance each other out very nicely. Leaves a strong bitter aftertaste. The mouthfeel is tangy and carbonated with a dry finish.

I enjoyed this beer a lot. A nice hoppy-but-well-balanced-big beer here. Locals and passers-through looking for good, homegrown hoppy beers could do far worse than visiting Franklin's and giving this a try. Not sure of the ABV, but this is a big beer. Not boozy in flavor, but noticeably big. It'll leave an impression on you.

was out visiting in maryland and was lucky enough to get this dipa on nitro-tap-wild! we sampled all of the beers at this place and this was the consensus favorite, even among the lite-swilling ladies (is that an endorsement?). was darker than most ipas/dipas, brownish amber in color. hazy with that thick, creamy nitro head. piney, floral, citrusy hops dominated the nose along with some dark, bready malts. starts out with some caramel sweetness and an onrush of bitter hops leads to a long drying finish. a big-bodied beer. having this on nitro gave it an unfamiliar creamy mouthfeel for a dipa, i am guessing this would be even more bitter/drying served with co2. glad to have tried a dipa served on nitro, it served this one better than my initial expectations suggested.

A - A brown beer that is lightly cloudy w/ a decent sized head and impressive lacing.

S - Fairly strong pine hops. Neither smooth nor crisp - a nice balance. Not much else.

T - Faint maltiness, a light breadiness and caramel, with a potent pine and a milder grassy hoppiness. A pine bitterness makes the aftertaste.

M - Creamy, frothy, smooth and pretty refreshing.

D - This beer could use either more malt or smoother hops to give it a better finish. It isn't a bad brew though. Personally, I'd classify it as a Double IPA rather than a Strong Ale.

This is Chaos on a nitro pour from Franklin's in Hyattsville, MD. The ale is served in a tumbler.

Appearance: The ale is a deep brown color, similar to a nut brown. There appears to be a great deal of sediment and haze in the beer.

Smell: The beer is a hop bomb, so spicy vibrant citrus hops rule the nose.

Taste: My earlier review likened this to an East Coast Arrogant Bastard and I think that the nitro accentuates that. Grapefruit flavored hops are the primary flavor and they grab you up front and don't let go. This is not a beer for the faint-of-heart.

Mouthfeel: Very bitter and harsh, although the nitro takes a hint of the edge off.

Drinkability: Hopheads will love this one, anyone else will want to refrain.

Server indicated that this brew had an ABV of 8.X% and that it started as a batch of Anarchy that the brewmeister decided to make into something different.

Served in a pint tumbler, this brew was reddish coppery brown (almost a burgundy shade), and opaque. Very little head.

Aroma was stongly hoppy. Taste was a serious hop blast, then interesting in the mid-palate, with bitter, almost metallic flavor notes, almost but not quite bittersweet. I didn't enjoy this flavor element until I got used to it most of the way through the pint. Words that come to mind are wormwood or greasewood (but I really don't know what either of those taste like). The finish was back to just plain bitter, unremittingly bitter, lastingly bitter. The IBUs on this puppy must be through the roof.

Mouthfeel was robust, medium- to thick-bodied. Drinkability, well this is not a session beer for me. It's interesting, but this is a megaton-scale hop bomb. I'm glad I tried it, but this might be a beer that could well be served in a smaller goblet glass rather than a pint glass. Makes me go Hmmmm and wonder about hops and all the chemicals that make them wot they are.
