It means "March" in German. Monks used to call it "Das Fluessige Brot," or "Liquid Bread." Maerzen is a unique, fresh, dark brown Bavarian lager that has a malty “bread taste” flavor. It is well balanced with a fresh hop finish.

Crystal clear amber/copper pour with a quickly receding head. Very musty malt smell, like stale soda crackers. The taste is not an improvement at all, that stale soda cracker aspect is just killing me. Fairly watery also, this one just isn't drinkable.

drinkability: proably the weakest marzen Ive had. Just a little werid with the taste of raw veggies

This is my second time buying A Heiner Brau product, the first was a Kolsch that they put out in a can (damn tasty) so this is my first experience with their bottled product...which seems a bit unfortunate...

While the beer seems like it is well made the inevitable has happened and it seems to be suffering a bit from light-skunk, leaving the flavors less than fresh and slightly sour. Also the carbonation level is on the low side...no expiration date or bottling date or anything to help to guide you as to how fresh it is...

pours copper amber, with a quickly vanishing cream colored collar. no lacing. smells bready with sweet caramel barley malts. the taste is mainly malts, all the way through. there is a subtle hop presence, but not enough to balance it out. not much going on, just bread and malts. the finish is sweet with a slightly bitter muskiness. has a creamy mouthfeel, and the body is on the heavier side of medium. not much carbonation at all. drinkability is ok. i was not impressed by this one. you don't really expect a wildly complex brew when you're talking maerzen, but you at least want what is there to mesh well. this one doesn't have it. the hops might as well not even be there, and it felt flat because of the lack of carbonation. better luck next time.

The beer pours a golden-orange color with a small white head. The aroma is grain, corn and bready malts. The flavor is more of the same. Overall, the smell and aroma of the beer are not very good. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Very average beer and not one to seek out.

12 oz emptied into a pint glass.

A: Pours a clear-ish amber with a 1-finger bone white head which receeds to a thin ring. Decent lacing.

S: Sweet barley malts come to the fore, caramel and yeasty bread begin to emerge as the beer warms.

M: Rather light, but with decent carbonation.

T: Follows the nose, malty sweetness with just a hint of hops. I detect some bananas and almonds here as well, especially after it warms. Crisp, dry finish. Very little aftertaste.

D: A very drinkable brew, but I did nitpick a bit. The body is too light for my tastes, there seems to be something lacking. My initial impression can be summed up in one word: Artificial. This beer checks all the Märzen boxes, but Americanizes the experience, right down to the spelling.

Pours into a pint glass as a translucent copper with a thin off-white head.

Smells very caramel-sweet with a hint of bananas and sugar candies.

Very sweet and malty. You can taste roasty grains and a gentle touch of fruitiness with the caramel carrying over from the scent. A slightly metallic taste in this particular sample. It's on the lighter side of medium here, with appropriate carbonation for style. To me, it would be easier without this slight off flavor of metal.

poured from bottle to a snifter, deep tranlucent amber color with small off white head that quickly left the scene and no lacing to speak of. Smelled of bready malts, little to no hop smell, and hints of dark fruits. Taste was in line with the smell only a little bolder and yeastier in a way that blended well. I like to try different beers and am glad I tried this but wouldn't go out of my way to sample again. Wouldn't turn one down either.

Ordered one of these at Buster's just down the street from the Heiner Brau brewery in Covington. Pours an orangy amber with very thin white head. It smells mostly malty with a hint of yeast. The taste is malt, yeast, and some faint hops, kind of bready. Mouthfeel is smooth, not a lot of carbonation. This is a drinkable brew, but a little flat for my taste.

12 oz. twist-capped bottled; enjoyed several of these on a mid-March trip to Louisiana, this is one of a couple leftovers. Poured to a pint glass.

Side label notes that 'Maerzen' means 'March', but also notes that southern German monks once called it 'Das fluessige Brot', or 'Liquid Bread'.

A: Perfectly bread-like amber pour, a 'toasted crust' that's amply cloudy and shows off a few rapidly-rising carbonation streams. A frothy off-white head builds to a finger, then fades quickly; the end result is a gauzy film and slim ring of fatter bubbles.

S: Hmmm. Modest 'baked bread' aroma, sweet and a touch nutty. Vague fruits, but hardly enough to make a lasting impression.

T: A tangy spice covers a fruitier lager, full of toffee and toasted malt. An odd souring in the finish, not sure if that is intentional. 'Sourdough' describes this well.

M: Moderately crisp, a light-medium body that really doesn't hold it's carbonation in the mouth...though the end result is a burpy/gassy feeling in the gut.

D: Easy enough to drink, a benign and unfiltered version that sips well, but isn't one I'd necessarily seek out again. Maybe worth a try, nothing more.

Pours a mildly hazy light copper color with a rapidly dissipating tan head. Leaves a thin sheen and collar with very little lacing left behind.

Nose is mostly sweet bready malts with a bit of toastiness and floral hop character. Pretty decent smelling marzen that is clean and fresh.

Flavor is a bit too toasty for me, combined with a noticeable hop presence makes this one seem very un-marzen. Has some lager yeast flavors as well as a light graininess. A touch too bitter and rough around the edges for me, I like the kolsch better.

S: not much in the smell but a little earthy and grassy.

T: this is where the grass and vegetables come out in a good way.

M: not much body or depth but very crisp considering how earthy it is.

D: over all it is a nice brew and will go great with our Louisiana food.

12oz bottle with no bottled/freshness date & no abv % on it. Strange that abv % isnt on the bottle, first time I have seen that. Brought back to me by my old man after a trip to Louisiana.

Poured aggressively a transluscent copper red color with a one finger off white fizzy head that falls within a matter of 20 seconds. No lacing at all. After the initial poor the appearance is quite drab - literally it takes me a half a minute to swirl up a tiny head. The bottle cap came off really easy, so this lack of head retention may be due to that. I will edit this review upon drinking a second bottle.

In the nose I get sweet toasty bready toffee caramel malts. Smells pretty good - nice & malty.

Taste follows the nose, bready caramel & booziness. Starts off with that sweet nutty maltiness & ends with a little booze bite. Looks can in fact be decieving.

I have read that Marzens are supposed to be full-bodied, in which this one doesnt stand up to par. It is really thin - which doesnt necessarily take away from the taste, but also doesnt enhance it.

Overall, it is pretty tasty but the look & feel just really are not there.

Thanks to NewGeneric for sending me yet another obscure southern brew. Served in a pint glass.

A - Pours with two-plus fingers of off-white foam that dissipates to a thin cap, but fails to leave any lacing. Body is a translucent amber-orange color with lots of tiny bubbles racing upwards.

S - Toffee, bread, nuts, bananas, and lightly toasted grains. A little bit cloying, but otherwise quite nice.

T - Taste is less sweet, and more yeasty, with a hefty amount of bread and dough character. Certainly true to style. There's a tiny but of sourness in the finish that imparts historical accuracy, although I'm not entirely sure it was intentional.

M - Viscous, chewy, but slightly over-carbonated with a bit of burn on the upper lip. The body is sufficiently big to imply a higher-gravity beer meant for aging.

D - I drank a 12oz bottle pretty quickly, but I wouldn't go out of my way to have this again. Drinks like a meal, and carbonation is slightly off-putting.

12 oz. bottle poured into a 16 oz. go-cup on the banks of the Mississippi in New Orleans. (Bought it at Sidney's on Decatur).

A: Poured an amber with 1-finger off-white head. Decent lacing.

S: Sweet, toasty malts.

T: Slightly bready/biscuity with some mildly sweet malts. Not much for hops but the maltiness is nice.

M: Pretty smooth, but on the verge of being watery.

D: Decent for a session beer. Glad I got to try it at least once. Wouldn't object to having it again.

A - It looks good. dark amber color and a cream colored head that goes up about two fingers before it sinks back into the beer.

S + T - I have not Oktoberfest, but not Marzen before. It is a very tasty beer. I can taste the malt and it has a strange almost sweet taste on the back of my togue.

M - It is a little thiner than i expected. I would have preferred a bit fuller or thicker mouthfeel.

Overall it is a very good locally brewed beer. I will buy this again.

Pours a slightly hazy amber with a small and short-lived off-white head that dissipates quickly to a small ring and leaves no lacing.

The aroma is a balance of toasted bread and sweet caramel malts with a slight musty hop aroma in the background.

The taste follows the aroma with a big toasted bready malt backbone that has hints of sweetness and earthy hops on top. The finish is very crisp and dry.

The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with average carbonation and, as mentioned before, dry and toasted in the finish.

This is a decent session beer from Heiner though I probably enjoyed the kolsch a little more.

Poured from a bottle into a mug/stein.

Look - clear and copper in color. Very little foam, good carbonation.

Smell - a little more malty than hoppy. Slightly sweet smelling.

Taste and Mouthfeel - Sweet in the beginning and middle. More malty in taste, hardly no bitterness at all. This might be considered too sweet for a lot of Bavarian beers. Texture is well-balanced.

Drinkability - Decent brew, but not terribly complex in taste.

Fresh 12oz bottle. Pours copper/amber with a nice, long-lived white head that leaves good lacing. Smells of caramel malt and a bit of sulfur (though it blows off after a few minutes). Some light hops. Clean amber malt taste with faint mineral notes. Pleasant light bitterness. It's really hard to fault this one; just a nice, true-to-style märzen.
