Located in the Moxham area of Johnstown, Tulune's is a fantastic little pub which has the best beer selection (in my opinion) this side of Pittsburgh.

The atomsphere is friendly and accommodating with a wide spectrum of clientele. From college kids to older folks, all are welcome. It tends to get busy after 8 or 9pm and can get quite packed.

The staff is outstanding and very knowledgable about their selection and is willing to take the time to help one learn about and choose the proper beer. Many a time I have seen someone who has drank nothing but adjunct crap come away from Tulunes with a newfound love of a trappist or american micro.

The tap selection rotates but the usual suspects are Franziskaner Hefeweisen, Spater Lager or Optimator, Delerium Tremens, Bells Oberon (summer) and others of the like. Bottle selection is extensive.

The menu has always been tasty pub grub, but I understand an upgrade is on the way. Regardless, I'm there for the beer and it is great.

Went out to the GapVax Manufacturing Plant for work out in Johnstown, PA in November 2013, worried that I wouldn't be able to find any craft beer to satisfy me and the boys for our overnight stay, turned to the BeerAdvocate for help of course and found this little local gem off the beaten path was having a Southern Tier tap takeover. Called them and found out they were closing for the night relatively soon and got a bit upset that we wouldn't find anywhere to drink that night, but explained to my situation that we're out of town looking for a good time ... we had 8 guys in my crew ready to drain their taps, and they said as long as you got 8 guys ready to drink we will stay open a few more hours. Absolutely incredible hospitality and kindness from the employees at Tulunes, pouring some great craft brews! Also there was local and regional craft beers in their fridge to stay and to go , and don't forget to try the original Icy Blue Taint (drink they're famous for) Great Bar food and the nicest employees, real nice quaint small town cozy bar vibe, don't miss this place if you're staying in town.

I was very impressed with EVERY aspect of this place. They have TONS of different beers as well as a lot on tap. They are always generous and giving out free samples and the staff are all super friendly and quick. Insanely good food and everything is priced quite reasonable. I have been there twice now and i will be going back many many more times. This place is a diamond in the rough and an absolutely wonderful place to drink all different kinds of beer or simply just grab some food. Overall i was incredibly impressed.

What a nice hole in the wall with a great beer selection of world class beers, great food (try the pizza!), and a knowledgable staff. Had a great time, and will definitely be back. If your beer tastes lean toward Belgian and other great imports...this is a great spot to try.

I was out in the Johnstown area on vacation and after doing a little family genealogy in the surrounding towns, arrived in mid afternoon. The bartender was very helpful and knowledgeable about the local beer scene and set me up with a summer brew Hala Kahiki from Rivertowne. Bought a six of Great Lakes before I left. He set me up with a pint glass and the local beer newspapers. Two patrons at the end of the bar were debating whether Iron City should have introduced new offerings or stayed with the original since their market share is shrinking . I took this to be a positive on how the craft beer movement is growing. All in all it was a nice visit to Tulune's, an oasis in the heart of Johnstown!

At first this place looks like a dive, but you realize it's actually a charming and warm little place to grab a bite and one of any number of a huge selection of beers from literally all over the world.

Staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. The beer selection includes great American micros, Belgian and German imports, and selections from elsewhere in South America, Europe, and Asia. The food isn't fantastic but it's pretty tasty and the price is right. I wouldn't go here for the food but I can't complain about it either.

As for the beer, I would say it's worth multiple visits for anyone who thinks of themselves as a beer geek. A real diamond in the rough.

Thanks to beer advocate I have found a beautifly place to drownd some sorrows whilst spending plenty a work night in Johnstown, PA. The place is dive looking right off a main drag in town. When you walk in...if there wasnt properly placed signs...you could consider it somewhat a maze. The main room has high tops, low tops, and decent number of seats at the bar. The main dinning area back and around the corner has more tables and tvs....not bad to take in a few of the 200+ beer menu. There is no question that this place rules the beer selection title of J'Town. The food is decent...typical bar food. there is a unique offering for appetizer, whith is a bread bowl with a designated dip inside it....so the group must eat the bowl as the apetizer gets eaten. The wings are good with the house special dusting. I had a black and blue burger that was very good. The night was capped by our server who was good humored and somewhat knowledgeable about the beers on tap. Definitely worth a visit...if in Johnstown.

I went to Johnston on business, being told that there is very little nightlife there. My brother came out to see me and asked if I knew where a "big beer" bar was in town. I knew nothing. Thanks to Sammy at Harrigans, we ended up at Tulunes, and my nightlife changed for the better.
I have never been to an establishment like Tulunes, so I was blown away at the selection.... full catalog of ales from all over the world, cold, and ready to drink.

In the 3 weeks I was there, I went 4 times, mostly different staff that were all very friendly and on point. Joe and Greg, who are the beer experts there, had no problem explaining all the different types of beer, and what to expect when you drink them.

The food was great, mac n cheese wedges, fried zucchini, Buffalo bluecheese chicken sandwich, I ate and drank till my hearts content. Everything I tried in Tulunes was either very good or exceptional.

Overall... if you are ever in Johnstown PA, and are looking for a great place to chill out and enjoy the finest ales, stout, IPA, whatever your flavor is, your sure to find it at Tulunes.
Thanks for the barleywine switch Joe... I now have another
favorite to look for at home.

Sincerely,

I wanted to start off by saying that this place is a diamond in the rough. Furthermore, so are their staff members. Each staff member, from management to bartender, brings a warm smile and I feel immediately wanted here. The beer selection is amazing and the prices are very fare. I wasn't going to post anything until I read the other posts from other people about this place. I read about how people thought that the prices were too expensive. I have been to quite a few craft and imported bars. I wanted to point out that a draft of Kasteel Rouge here only costs $7.00 a glass. I have been to several other bars that offer this beer and they are either $9.00 or $10.00 a glass.
The food here is remarkable featuring some great, unique recipes.
If you are looking for some great beers in a location that's hard to find with prices that beat Pittsburgh's Belgium prices, you should totally come here. If you don't know about beer but want to try new things outside of Samual Adams and Bud, just ask for Greg, Joe, or Abby and they will point you in the right direction. All you got to do is tell them what you want the beer to taste like and let the magic happen! They even have a website which you can even send emails to the owners.

the atmosphere is very friendly with a "no jerks allowed" type of attitude. the bar is nice and clean, my only request is that there would be more space for people. on a busy weekend night, it can be annoying finding a spot for you and your buddies. On a slow night, the place is the perfect size.

Service is great and knowledgeable.

The selection is generally good. At times they get really rare beers but then at other times they won't have some favorite craft brews. However, my favorite thing about the selection is that it seems to be constantly rotating. You can go in on a regular basis and often find something new and exciting.

The food is actually great. I only wish the kitchen were open past 10pm.The menu is as rare as the beer with some food entres such as "captain crunch coated chicken fingers"

I think it is way over priced, however the beer you are over paying for is unavailable anywhere else for a 50-60 mile radius.

Having just moved to the Johnstown area a few months ago I relied on Beerfly to discover this place, and I was more than pleased. Let me start off by saying that if I would not have found this place on BA I would have drove by multiple times without even looking twice. It's an unassuming green and brick building in an industrial area of the city. The bar area is nice but fairly small with a larger dining area in the back. The atomosphere is cozy, and laid back. They have a motto "no jerks allowed" which works for me because the last thing I want to do when I go out for good beer is worry about getting hassled. The first time I went I was promptly greeted, and served by Joe the manager who is a great guy that really knows, and loves to talk about beer. On my next visit I met Abbey, and Greg who are both great people that know, and love their beer as well. The selction leans toward Belgian, and German imports, but the American craft selection is great also. There are 10+ rotating taps that are sure to please any BA. I'm not going to get into listing beers because they are always changing. If the taps don't please you I'm sure the bottle selction will.

Everything I've tried from the food menu I've liked (try the crabcake sandwich). It's the normal pub fare with an interesting twist plus some things you are not going to find in most bars. The prices are just a tad high, but the overall selection, service, and simple things like getting your beer in a proper glass are worth it.

Overall if your a BA in the Johnstown area Tulune's is a must stop. You will be happy you did.

All I can say is, "Thank goodness for BeerFly". If it weren't for that, I would have never re-discovered this place. I say that because I was here in Johnstown about two years ago and stopped by on a Monday night, it was locked up and pitch black inside. Based on that experience, I thought the place had closed down and was very dissapointed. I've been up here a few times since then and ended up bringing my own beer thinking I was in the middle of the Sahara Beer Desert. This trip I decided to consult BA once again as a last resort because I was staying downtown instead of in the 'burbs where I normally stay. BA once again listed Tulune's as a place to visit and I thought it was a joke until I saw there were posting's as recent as this very month. Once I saw that I needed to look no further because I remember from a few years ago when I was here, how cool this placed "looked on paper". O.K., this was definite;ly worth checking out. I hopped in the car, punched the address into GPS and away we went. On the way there, I'm scratching my head and asking how a place like this could even exist here, it didn't look like an eclectic beer type of town. Then I pull up to the building, park the car, and go to the front of the building. The front door reminds me of the entry way to a Legion Post or some sort of bingo hall. I go up the stairs to my right, still skeptical at this point, and enter a big, elongated room that immediately made me feel at home. Nothing fancy, sort of rustic (in a beer sort of way), and lots of eclectic beer signs around the room, now this was cool! As soon as I sat down, I was greeted by "Greg the bartender", very warm and friendly, I felt like I was at home. Greg gave me the beer list and it took a good 10 minutes for the first past through, there was that many great beers on the menu; after all, as BA members, isn't the beer selection first and foremost above the food?! I started with a Devil Dancer, man, I haven't had this beer in a LONG time, it was GREAT! Abbey, one of the other bartenders stopped to take my food order, I got the Southside Chicken Philly. Coming from that part of PA, how good could this really be compared to Philly...really? The sandwich came, and it was pretty darn good.

Then, I met Joe, the beer geek from Johnstown. As soon as we started talking I liked this guy right away, he's incredibly passionate about craft beer and very interesting to talk to. Joe's got a beer charisma that really draws you in - from one beer geek to another, I could have talked to him all night. Greg ended his shift and joined me at the bar and the three of us discussed beer for quite awhile. In fact, I had a great conversation with Abbey also, that girl really knows her beer as well; good gawd, I was in beer geek heaven in the middle of North Western PA!

In all my ramblings, the point I'm trying to drive home is quite simple:

1) They have an extensive list of craft brews that is sure to please any beer geek.

2) The food was very, very good.

3) Tulune's, if located in a much larger city would rival most beer establishments in town, this place is a class act.

4) The MOST important point of all (and discussed between Joe and myself), the folks at Tulune's KNOW what they're pouring. I love establishments where I can walk away with not only a full stomach, but also a beer education...they delivered the goods.

Next trip to Johnstown I'll be leaving my personal craft beer stash at home and head back here, I wish I lived closer. This is a GEM in what would think the middle of a beer desert. I'm definitely coming back, you need to check this place out if you're in town. To Tulune's, could you please open a location in Allentown??!!!

A hidden gem in the Moxham section of Johnstown. Nice selection of Belgium and German on tap plus an extensive choice of bottles. Joe (the owner) makes this place. If he has time, ask him a question about the beer. You can see his passion for beer. Not a "beer snob" but a beer lover who will answer questions from a novice or expert with equal enthusiasm.

Haven't had a lot of their food, only the occasional special. Overall, not bad.

So I said "Where are you going?" and she chuckles replying "I'm not going anywhere, what about you?"
"Well, they're sending me to Western Pennsylvania", and then she says cooly, and I'll never forget this, "Have fun at the flood museum".
And I'm quiet for a minute mulling that one over and just as I say "Kris, I know you're busting on me, I just don't get how", the inbox "ding" brings a link to the Johnstown flood museum website. Perusing, I'm thinking "Oh! So Clara Barton did her first peacetime relief effort here, really? But whatever, I ain't going to Johnstown anyway, I'm going to Pittsburgh proper", and I did. And then they took that fatality downtown and needed to clear us out of there for a bit, shuffling us 100 miles east, to Johnstown...

Swore I'd never, ever go back after that 3 turned 5 month stint, but then you find yourself driving up 219 one night reliving the pain. And Johnstown, in through the back way. Doesn't look like much from the outside, in fact it looks like less than much, but in and up I go. Long straight bar with a wood formica finish, a wood lip, and a place for my feet on the inside wall, seating for a dozen plus. The pillared barback unit holds a large center mirror mostly obstructed by a large flatscreen providing a slideshow of pics from humor websites mostly, but also National Geographic pics, nature & scenic, events, friends, family . Good shelved glassware to both sides with small boards listing house drinks & shots, and larger ones above listing tap selections and new bottled selections. Tiered booze on the counter below center, cupboards down below. Strung holidayish green lighting lining parts of the bar to the far.

Old panel wood walls with empty bottles shelved here & there, and a beige pressed tin ceiling. Spinnin' fans & a single drop lamp, wall mounts, table lamps & import brewery neons, all sorts of brewery signage, placards, tins, faux barrel ends, beer flags & wallpaper, mirrors, prints, ads & pics. House shirts for sale suspended around and a giant hanging blow up bear. 4 raised hightops & shortys round and 'tangular adjacent and more seating in a side room located, well yeah, but you have to go up the stairs to the rear and hook around the bend. 10 tables there, a Wii guitar hero set up, and bands when bands do.

11 taps sunken below the bar, I can sees 'em from here; a single American micro (Left Hand Widdershins Barleywine), a few Germs (Franziskaner Hefe, Spaten Lager), and the remainder a mix of Belgians (Kasteel Rouge, Delirium Tremens, Piraat Ale, Wittekerke, Cherish Raspberry & Kriek, Lindemans Peche, and the Tulanes Abbey Brown made for them by Brouwerij Van Steenberge).

And an extensive bottle selection housed mostly in a 3 door glass cooler up front. 60 Belgians, 50 American micros, 26 UK & 16 German, and then mostly beers of the world, with some maltos & ciders mixed in but no crap macros. It's got to be creeping upwards of the 200 bottles range. They do up a printed list periodically but things change up so quickly with the way they order that the lists are quickly outdated. Did I mention an Orval costs $7.50? I was kind of sort of slightly totally hoping I would find them aged 3 years in a-they-don't-move-them-worth-a-shit kind of way. Let me see, oh, dated 22/1/09, well, can't blame me for trying. I can see a good amount of Troegs, Yards & DogFishHead selections from where I'm sitting. Started with the Kasteel Rouge, forgot how good that was, and then starting spying the cooler for bottles selections. Oooh, is that the Bell's Oberon? Yes, I'll have that please, and for a third and out, maybe a Festina.

I was going to, had plans to, really wanted to have me a chicken sandwich but they were doing Wednesday night mad wing specials. They have, oh, I don't know, many kinds of wings. I had the Raspberry teriyaki & some sort of crystal meth dusted, a ½ dozen each, they were well cooked crispy and good (Oh, now you tell me the Mesquite rub is the way to go, thanks, guy sitting next to me).

TV to the rear shows the Sox down 5-1 and they're piping in some good tunes, just now.... REM Me In Honey, and it's just perfect. Talked good beer with people there, mostly fascinated by my little scribble book of crazy. And talked with beer manager Joe for a bit, they're doing a good thing here. Just looked down at the Mid Atlantic Brew News and saw Phil's mug (Hey man, your dirty Red Sox are being dealt a beat down). Food, well it was wings but they were good. Beer was fresh and they turn it over pretty quickly. My major objection to the place is the number of speed zones through small towns I'll have to deal to get out of here. Good house, I wouldn't have minded Johnstown so much had this been there when I was.

They have their own ale manufactured in Belgium for them! If visiting in late September, be sure to come prepared to drink...Their Octoberfest celebration is worth stopping in for. They have some great representations of O fest beer such as Spaten, and some fall favorites, usually a Pumpkin ale or two or 3. Great place, decently priced, and a nice atmosphere allow this place to shine above all else in J-town as far as total overall selection. Definately stop in when you get the chance!

I was in Johnstown on business in mid July. On the recommendation of Beer Advocate and backed up by a few local opinions, we decided to check out Tulunes. It wasn't easy to find (nothing in Johnstown seems to be if you are not from there), but it was well worth the effort.

Tulunes has an excellent beer selection both on draft (perhaps a dozen) and in bottles (well over 100). Prices are at what one would expect for quality beverages. Belgian beers are the specialty of the house, and they have on draft several Belgian styles that were brewed in Belgium specially for Tulunes. One of these was particularly intersting, with a fruity, almost wine like quality, it's a little off the usual beer track; I wish I could remember the name.

The bartender/manager was quite knowledgeable and was of great assistance, esp. to my mainstream beer buddy who was befuddled by the huge selection. We were there for the beer and did not eat, so I have no comment on the menu, though with the quality of the liquid bread imbibed, we did not go away hungry. At the risk of being labeled sexist, I cannot go without mention of just how good looking the waitresses were this night; quite the distraction!

Several people in these ratings have commented on the building or the location, but I guess that all depends on what you're used too; it looks pretty typical to me on the outside and has a great neighborhood atmosphere on the inside.

It's like hanging out in your best friends living room. Great beer, good people and a great high def TV right in the middle of it. If the game isn't on, the cycle through pictures the owners find online - many of them hilarious.

If you're within 50 miles of this place it's worth the drive. Don't judge the book by it's cover though..( I did a drive by and almost didn't stop in from the looks of the old building and industrial neighborhood ) So glad I stopped...It was a very memoriable evening.

I had a conference in Johnstown and happen on this little gem ....thanks to Beer Advocate.
I met a very nice couple at the bar who introduced me to "Joe". He went out of his way to suggest a line up of Belgiums..Too bad I had to limit my selection since I had to drive back to the hotel...The food was yummie..the folks who frequent this bar were so...nice. They invited me to join their friends in the dining room area for their Friday night out. A wonderful experience for a single women, seeking great beer and a friendly bar in Johnstown PA.

Has a somewhat dumpy, offsetting exterior considering its in an old building off the highway in a rather not so glorious part of town. But a small yet quaint and nicely designed interior greets you and this place is set up for a beer lover and sports fan and also gives off a vibe that it is alright to let loose here. The bartenders are knowledgeable and don't mind shootin' the bull about anything, especially beer. Beer binders greet you at the bar and there's the coolers looking at you, and from my experiences at other places their prices are pretty good. The food specials are great and w/o the specials the food is priced alright, but it is just standard bar food quality (you go here to drink and grab a snack if you're hungry, not specifically to eat). Gotta hit this place again.

Go for the beer or go for the taint... This place has personality, a sense of humor and a great selection of Belgian and Craft beer. No BMC products are offered! And the taint - well we did not try this offering but it is served up in several different variations including: sweaty taint, fuzzy taint - you get the picture . . . If you are into mixed drinks the "taint" line of offerings substitutes a Blue Sky energy drink in favor of Red Bull, hence the "taint". It "taint" Red Bull...

Its ok go inside . . . for us this was a classic case of "you can't judge a book by its cover" The outside of this place is a little scary. However, the outside of the building does not do this establishment justice on many levels. The structure itself is over 100 years old. The wood paneled walls give the interior a 70's-80's feel but the alternative/indie music sets a comfortable vibe inside. Make sure you look up and check out the amazing tin ceilings. It is humble yet comfortable. What the building lacks in modern conveniences it makes up for with its staff/selection.

The bartenders and cellar manager, Joe did an awesome job representing Tulune's and the products they serve. They were very knowledgeable about their offerings and provided multiple samples to further illustrate the beer of topic.

Definitely worth the trip!

A dozen or so taps with a constant rotation of impressive drafts is the main highlight here! Mostly Belgians on tap with two unique brews made just for Tulune's... St. Tulune's and Tulune's Trippel. Both good, with the trippel slightly ahead of the St. Tulune's. DT on tap every time I've been there... very cool!

Bottled selection is excellent for this area. 100 plus imports and American craft brews.

Atmosphere is typical for the 100 year old building Tulune's resides in.

Food is acceptable and the prices are reasonable.

In closing... if you've never been to Tulune's... you must, Must, MUST check it out!

A big "thank you" to Tulune's and staff for being within 25 minutes from my house.

Cheers!

This is a true gem in Johnstown, PA. The bottled selection is more than respectable and the dozen or so beers on tap are unlike any selection within 100 miles.

DT on tap was a bargain at $4 during their "Looney Hours" (5-7). Their St. Tulune's Abbey Brown and Trippel are both customed brewed in Belgium and only found on tap here. The Abbey Brown was a big hit.

Our server was a bonafide beer geek, which is really helpful when you are bringing friends who aren't. I'll definitely be back anytime I find myself in Johnstown.

Heavy focus on imported beer, particularly belgiums. The draft selections (12 taps) is almost entirely imported with the exception of Sly Fox products. There is a good selection of bottled craft and micros and they have some beers you might have trouble finding in much larger areas. The staff is knowledgeable, great selection of matching glassware and there is live music scheduled regularly. The atmosphere is pretty cool, far from pretentious, I have never had the food there but fhave heard decent things.

I have lived in the J-town area most of my life, and it is great to see a bar like this there, the owners are cool, and the beer is great. Its so nice to see people getting to try some different beers, because its not all coors light and miller. The only down side I would have to say is that they need more beers on tap, right now I think they have 6. Oh yeah and they have good live bands that play there, and the bar menu is different in a good way, like deep fried mac and cheese.Over all it is a great place to hang out in J-town.

Found this place by accident when I asked about finding good beer at another watering hole. I had not been back to J-town in four years. In western Pennsylvania it has always been very hard for me to find good quality beers!

The bartenders are very friendly and like to talk about the beer they serve. The are also very knowledgeable about their beers. The beer selection is probably tops in the state. For anyone that wonders, I have been to Monk's Cafe in Philly two weeks before I visited. I was surprised to find Petrus, Biere du Boucanier, are available. The samples of the beers on draft are a very nice bonus. I was disappointed to find discontinuation of some of the microbrews, they had been carrying.

The price of a take out 12 pack was a bit on the extremely high end. The mark-up on the bottles is about 2.5x or more of the shelf price on some beers.

Another positive note is that they are open on Sundays when the Steelers play.

Got intro'ed to this place after I got back in town in March or April, and I've been going regularly ever since.

Atmo - 4.5 It tends to be a bit crowded and movement can be a challenge on some weekend nights. I'm usually there during the week, so this doesn't effect me much. Outside of that, there's plenty of seating at the bar, near the bar, and in the back room. Also, the atmosphere tends to be a bit more laid back compared to most places.

Qual - 5 Keep in mind, you get what you pay for. If you are content to suck down some gutter swill that costs $7.99 a case, you may be in for a surprise when it comes time to order a beer. Most of your imports will be in the $4+ range, but I'd say about 1/3 of their beers are $3 and under (as mentioned on one of the chalkboards behind the bar).

Service - 5, although I don't feel that even a 5 is an adequate rating. If I could rate a 10 on a scale from 1 to 5, that -might- do it justice. All the bartenders are extremely friendly, and will set you up with a sample of something on tap if asked. Actually, there's been times I've been set up with a sample of something w/o being asked (i.e. something they just started carrying), which in my eyes is a definite positive. Almost forgot to mention that the bartenders are also very knowledgable when it comes to the product being served.

Selection - 5, no less than 150 beers, with a good majority of them being Belgian and micros, IIRC. Even better than the selection is the lack of selection, if that makes any sense. That's right. No "shit beer" or "bum brew" like Budweiser, Natural Ice, Old English, and the like. The cheapest thing you will find is a "brick" of Bavik for around five or six dollars (can't remember the price, but it's in that ballpark), and even that is a good deal on a good beer.

Food - n/a. At the time I originally wrote this, there was no kitchen, although there was one in the works. From what I found out this week, the kitchen should be open. Note to self: try food.

Recommended this place to several co-workers, friends, and family members.

I found this bar recently through an odd connection at work, and it turned out to be a wonderful place. Blows anything else in the Johnstown-Altoona-Ebensburgh area away. The bar has two nice sized rooms with huge celings. No matter who's bartending the service is great. They'll give you smples of anything on draft, give recommendations, but not act like beer knurds. They have 11 taps, some staples are Liefman's Framboise and Delerium Tremens. The bottle selection is unbelievable for the area. In a town where Beck's in fancy, they have Lindeman's, Gouden Caroules, all the Deleriums, Corsendonk, Kasteel and tons of others. Really phenomenal for being in J-town. They said they should be adding about 15 more taps and a kitchen in a few months, so when that happens, this will be the place to be. If you're ever in this are let me know, I'm there almost every day.
