A smoked Belgian Porter, collaborated upon by Oliver's, Brewer's Art, and Stillwater. Served at the former DSX in a snifter.

A: The porter is a darker brown color, thick enough to be chocolate and verging on black. An off-white head, thin and fragile, hangs around.

S: The nose is Belgian sweet, candi sugars mixing with the darker, richer porter notes. Smoke is present but as a supporting actor, lending just a bit of meaty depth to the sweet Belgian aromas.

T: The sweetness of Belgian candi sugars comes through immediately. Smoke is present throughout in very limited quantities and again as a bitplayer. Darker porter flavors, deep roast with chocolate, are an interesting contrast to the yeast and sugars. A very easy beer, more BSDA than AP, but who's counting? The sweetness, the darker malts, a touch of smoke, a very complex trio.

M: Dark but inviting, the sweetness beckons me back everytime.

On cask at max's today.

The beer pours a blackish brown color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is OK, showcasing light licorice, coffee and light sulphar (the burton snatch?). The flavor profile replicates the nose pretty closely (no sulphar), with the modest sweetness drying out nicely on the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied to full, with a soft, almost creamy mouthfeel. The finish is fairly long, with some noticeable licorice. Alcohol is well integrated into the flavor profile.

This beer is listed as smoked Belgian porter, but I really don't get all that much smoke on the nose or palate. Certainly no one will ever confuse this beer with the smoked porter from Alaskan brewing.

A nice enough beer, but not something I can see myself ordering again any time soon.

OMG - never tasted anything so hoppy!!

Thought the hubby had ordered me a nice pleasant beer but instead got this.

If you aren't into hoppy, don't order this!

He said it's great. Loved the different hop notes he tasted nand complexity of flavors.
