Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel (French for "Mortal Sin") is an intensely black and dense beer with very pronounced roasted flavours. Fair trade coffee is infused during the brewing process, intensifying the bitterness of the beer and giving it a powerful coffee taste. Péché mortel is brewed to be savored; we invite you to drink it in moderation.

This stout style, high in alcohol and bitterness in order to favour preservation, was historically brewed to support the long and arduous voyage necessary to export the beer from England to Russia. The word Imperial comes from the fact that the beer was specially brewed for the Russian tsar’s court.

2013 bottle.
Black beer with a perfect half finger worth of light caramel/tan head. That is very thick.
Smell is of heavy coffee. Bitter & roasty coffee. Maybe some slight heat like peppers. Very appealing.
Taste follows the nose amazingly. It's the same heavy coffee with the bitter and roasty notes. Some bitter dark chocolate. Small vanilla. This is good.
Very smooth mouthfeel. Creamy
Overall, this is an amazing experience. Very happy with this one.

Look: Opaque jet black with a medium mocha colored head. No activity visible.

Smell: Robust and sticky on the nose. Notes of dark chocolate covered cherries, bakers chocolate, fresh espresso, black licorice, a lightly smoky ash note, and a sharp alcohol presence.

Taste: Cacao bibs and bitter espresso coat the palate on the attack. The espresso note is incredibly complex with notes of cherries, licorice, leather, and apricots. The attack sits heavy on the palate before the body slowly moves it off the palate. The body consists of rich bitter black malt, burnt baguette crust, light ash, and an boozy alcohol note. The finish is quite bitter with floral hops notes that is different then the black malt on the body.

Feel: Thick and oil up until the finish which thins out considerably. The finish is semi dry approaching dry. Medium plus bitterness. Sharp somewhat abrasive alcohol. Carbonation is standard.

Overall: A imperial stout that is true to style. Rich, oily, bitter, boozy, and complex. The attack is pretty incredible. The coffee notes balance perfectly with the beer to allow the black malt to bring the bitterness instead. I have a bit of an issue with how boozy it is though. I’ve had beer that have higher ABV’s that aren’t quite as acrid in alcohol. It’s an imperial stout that is very true to form. Delicious.
