Thanks to Jones153 for the bottle!

BDark brown near black in colour, ring of tan head, no lace to mention here. Smell is a mix of rum, vanilla and chocolate, a bit of oak as well with some roast, as this warmed a bit it smells like tiramisu cake and is really quite nice. Taste is all chocolate and vanilla upfront before bringing in some rum and oaky/woody flavours, roast with a bit of coffee, lots of vanilla in the aftertaste. Lightly carbonated, medium-light body. Quite nice, the base beer comes through quite a bit here as the rum and oak are a bit on the subtle side but still add some nice complexity, more body would be apreciated but body wise it is pretty close to the base beer which makes sense.

330 mL bottle poured into a snifter. 2014 bottle.

Appearance - Black body. Minimal khaki head. Settles to a very thin collar.

Smell - Rum is pretty strong. Gives it a fruity aroma. Chocolate. Vanilla.

Taste - Chocolate. Strong oak with an astringent oak flavor. Vanilla is really strong. Lingers into the finish.

Mouthfeel - The rum is pretty strong. Very astringent and adds to the booziness. Medium carbonation.

Overall - The rum detracts from the drinkability but adds a nice component.

A huge thank you to Montrealbcr82 for this big want!! 2014 bottle.

Appearance. Pours pretty darn black, topped with almost a finger of dark khaki head.

Smell. Nice dark rum and molasses, some dark roasted malts and coffee with a very slight smokiness, a little vanilla too in kind of an ice cream way if that makes any sense and a bit of fresh wood. Nice stuff.

Taste. Sweet dark chocolate, some boozy rum and fresh bitter wood, dry roasty malts and powdery cocoa in the finish, lightly astringent.

Mouthfeel. Medium+ body, medium-low carbonation.

Overall. Nice stuff, quite dry and I have to say I prefer rum barrels to bourbon. Yep, put that in your pipe and smoke it! Thanks again Tyler!!!

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color ale with a medium size brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of cacao and vanilla with some rich creamy black chocolate notes. Taste is also a mix of rich black chocolate notes with real cacao coming through with some vanilla and light rum notes also noticeable. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Smooth drinking stout with rum barely noticeable but smoothing some of the edges out.

A - Pitch black with a thin layer of medium brown head that immediately receded to a ring around the edges of the glass.

S - Heavy chocolate and vanilla aromas. Fairly sweet with some roast. Not getting much barrel in the nose, but the vanilla aroma is likely masking it.

T - Roast, sweet chocolate and vanilla flavours. Light oak and spice, but otherwise not a huge barrel presence. Almost has a chocolate milkshake like flavour to it. Very nice flavour profile but would love more barrel.

M - Medium body. Very creamy and silky. Light carbonation.

Reviewing the Rum Barrel Aged Aphrodisiaque from Brasserie Dieu Du Ciel out of Montréal, Quebec (the Rome of Canada). This beer is their lovely Aphrodisiaque imperial stout aged in rum barrels.

Score: 90

January 2014 vintage bottle served in an O'so snifter and enjoyed on 05/07/14. Big shout out and thank you Adam and Marcus, my Canadian buddies, for helping me acquire this one.

Appearance: Black bodied with a half finger layer of khaki head off the pour. Okay lacing, good retention, solid cling. 4/5

Smell: Huge, smack-you-across-the-face vanilla cake and vanilla frosting. Also, milk chocolate and brown sugar, rounded out by rum and light wood-like character. Not the most complex, but the vanilla character here is incredibly appetizing. The brown sugar note slowly turns syrupy as it warms up. Really, really well-integrated nose. I could smell this all evening. 5/5

Taste: Unfortunately, the taste is not very well-integrated or as much of an explosive desserty vanilla bomb as the nose. Still, there are delicious pieces here. Vanilla-forward rum, chocolate, and wood. The finish is somewhat crisp, with just a bit of that wood flavor lasting. A touch boozy and heavy on the wood character, in my opinion. As it warms up, the rum develops a nicer finish. 3.75/5

Mouthfeel: Thin bodied, low carbonation. Nice balance, not very sweet, but watery mouthfeel. 3/5

Overall: While the rum aging has given this delectable stout an epic nose, the barrel treatment caused this beer to take step back in the taste department in my opinion. I like the added complexity of the rum/vanilla notes, but they were not particularly well-integrated and the taste was a bit too boozy/woody for my preference (especially given the lack of a viscous body to back it up). There is clearly a tease of greatness here; some wonderful characteristics (the nose...the nose....it is so amazing that I might as well just smell this beer instead of drink it!) with plenty of roughness around the edges. I imagine that if Dieu Du Ciel tinkered with this one a bit, that over time this could become better than Barrel Aged Peche Mortel. I would certainly be interested in sampling future batches of this one. Thank you for the hookup Adam and Marcus! Cheers.

Cost: $8 for a 12 oz bottle.

Poured from a 341 ml bottle into a stemmed tulip glass.

A: Dark and black and almost opaque with a nice cloudy mocha head that falls fast to a thin creamy collar and leaves behind some lace.

S: A big nose that takes me straight back to the beaches of Cuba with a big sweet rum dominating. Sweet chocolate and dark roasted malt, coffee and sweet vanilla.

T: The barrel mellows on the palate but there is still some hot alcohol present that overpower some of the subtle complexities of the not barrel versions. Still there is big flavor, roasted grain, dark malt and coffee with rich chocolate and vanilla milkshake flavors. The finish is very long, complex and sweet .

M: Medium-high body and medium carbonation; rich, smooth, silky.

O: Incredible depth of flavor and mouthfeel especially for a 6.5% beer and there is a nice balance of boozy barrel and other flavors.

***2014 release***

Poured from a 341ml bottle.

Pours a very black body with 3 fingers of dark brown foam, good retention. Aroma is a mix of vanilla and rum. Flavor is mostly rum but there`s hints of cocoa in the aftertaste. Body is a little thin. If i compare to the base beer, the rum doesn`t really add more and if anything, i actually find it to be a lesser beer. Still good but expected more.

Dark brown with an amber tinge when held to the light. Little visible carbonation, and a half finger of off white head.

Smells of rum, toffee, dark chocolate, raisins and coffee.

The taste is very rum forward with a big boozy quality, raisins, coffee, black liquorice and dark chocolate.

Medium to thick body with moderate carbonation. Actually gives the illusion of having more alcohol than it does.

Got this in a seasonal pack from this brewery, purchased at Brou Ha Ha in Gatineau, Quebec. Seriously good brew.

341ml Bottle received in trade with mtomlins - thanks!!

Appearance - Dark brown colour with an above average size frothy beige head. I can't make out the amount of carbonation showing and there is some fair lacing. The head lasted for over 5 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, booze

Taste & Mouth - There is a below amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, chocolate, and coffee. There is also some vanilla and I can taste the rum quite a bit.

Overall - Surprising that this beers still rings in at 6.5% given the barrel aging. Reminds me of a rum and coke a little bit taste wise. I'm a rum fan so I really enjoyed this one. Lots of flavour going on for a relatively lower abv beer. Well done.

Appearance: It has a nice almost jet-black color to it. It has a nice creamy tan head that dies down moderately and leaves some nice lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of rum, cocoa, vanilla, roasted coffee and some sweet caramel.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has some rum, cocoa, bitter dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla and faint caramel.

Mouthfeel: It has a low carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavors and aromas.
