Very Good
Solstice D'hiverSolstice D'hiver
Notes: This noble winter beer is brown in colour with flaming red highlights. It has a complex aroma of fruits, alcohol and hops. Its taste is delicately sweet and liquor-like with a hint of burnt caramel. It is a very bitter beer with aromas and flavours reminiscent of red fruit. The aftertaste is accentuated by the wonderful flavour of hops.

Appearance - Poured into Dogfish Head snifter. Very dark reddish brown. A decent sized tan ring stays around for the whole ride

Aroma - Smells like a typical English barley. Dark fruits, sugar, caramel/toffee. Also fair amount of alcohol. Almost sweet rum like

Taste - Hidden surprise here. Some hops that I did not notice in the smell. Everything else followed suit to the nose. Carmalized sugar, and lots of deep malt flavor stand out along with the alcohol burn that stings the nostrils a bit.

Feel - Very smooth. Despite some hoppyness, it feels much like an English style. I would say medium bodied with a little bite in the follow through.

Overall - Excellent beer. I wasnt expecting it to be an American style, but it is more of a hybrid. I would say it actually may lean toward English. The flavors could be a little more pronounced. I would probably score it a little better as and English version. I think this would age really well though.

Purchased 3 months ago and have had it stored at 55-60 since.

A- Very dark, amber with no light getting through. No head at all, very few bubbles. Nice dark barleywine.

S- Slight fruity smell, overall though I can't pick up too much other then that

T- In order I would go dark cherry, caramel, alcohol, and slight bitterness. The cherry and alcohol are definitely the strongest although the hops meet well at the end

M- Thick, it holds on the tongue well. Not as much as others but definitely more then other barleywines I have had. Not complaining.

D- A little strong on the alcohol but otherwise I feel its a fairly nice mixture. Others mentioned slight chocolate which I couldnt pick up but feel if it were slightly stronger would definitely make this better

O- very happy I picked up 4 of these, got 1 more in the cellar gonig to give another 6 months to.

A: Dark, slightly muddy mahogany. About a finger of head.

S: Alcohol, spicy, malts, hops.

T: Some drying hops and malts. Grainy. Caramel. A little alcohol. Really good.

M: Slight carbonation and a little drying, but not much to say beyond.

O: Very tasty barley wine. I'd have another. Recommended.

A lovely brew, it's like Peche Mortel's weaker sister. Less body, less flavour, less of everything but still a nice option to have. I would highly recommend it.

Pours a murky darker brown color with a little bit or maroon to it. Around a centimeter of lightish head. Not a lot of retention, minimal lacing. Smells of brown sugar, rich caramel, some figgy fruitiness, and some alcohol and hops bitterness. Flavor begins with a light sweetness that expands into a fruity winelike phenolic frolic in the mouth. Midpalate is increasingly malty before the finish with lots of hop bitterness, some booze, and a light residual sweetness. Fairly heavy in body with a medium level of fizzy carbonation all around. Nice tasting American style barleywine here, well executed, but not too exciting for my taste either.

A - Amazing looking brew! Head quickly settles into a nice light brown foamy crown. Head stays as a thin cracker for the entirety. Some nice lacing too.

S - Very grape. Not to much else... Some slight heat, but not sugary. Some deep molasses. Almost smells like lighter fluid.

T - Lots of big smooth flavor. An awesome B-wine! Slightly sweet, but not overly. Not too much heat. Some big grape notes turn out well.

M - Perfect, with only slight bitterness.

O - Phew! This one will take your head-off!!! An awesome brew, but one to let sit and rest for a few years...

341 ml bottle
Part of the Winter Warmers from the LCBO.

Pours a cloudy reddish brown with very little head. The nose is phenol, cherries, malted barley. Taste is pretty smooth, a strong alcohol presence which warms in the finish. Light moughtfeel, a sipper / one bottle per session. Overall a kind of bland offering but good to try. Put two more bottles in the cellar to perhaps revist and rereview.

330 mL ("2" and "3" notches cut in the label, not sure exactly what that indicates) into a tulip. Pours a deep mahogany amber w/ a thin off-white head.

Aroma is faintly floral, fruity, sweet. Brown sugar, caramel, touch of vanilla.

Taste follows nose. Nice balance of sweet, fruity, floral, and bitter. No single element dominates.

Mouthfeel is smooth and slick, medium to heavy body.

Overall a really nice, well balanced American barleywine.

2004 vintage shared with the barleywinefiend.

du ciel, so of course, a twistoff, but it does the dark red thing with ease, pillowing a cloud of et cetera.

It's oxidized, but not obnoxiously, and this beer gives me reflection on the oxidation process.. If people are so worried about it, why do waxed and pops bottles have the same oxidation as twist-offs? I won't think about too much. I need those bottles for my own purposes.

It is delicious, full of dark fruits but persistent (after 6 years) hops linger on, recounting the years gone by. There are stories to tell here, and it is a good night to pass a bottle on to a dear new friend.
