Strong brown ale inspired by the beer brewed by Belgian Trappist monks. Very little bitterness, this beer has intense malty and sweet flavours, mixed with the taste of chocolate and caramel. It presents complex red fruit and spice flavours due to the type of yeast that is used during the brewing process. This beer is at its best only after it has aged for six months. The Rigor Mortis are complex beers designed and brewed with patience and care in the tradition of the great Belgian Abbey beers.

Bottled 11/24/22; drank 12/2/23 @ Pokemon Communion.

Opaque dark brown appearance.

Big khaki head; strong, frothy lacing remained.

Raisin, brown sugar, caramel & plum notes in the nose.

This smelled great!

Creamy medium thick mouthfeel.

Raisin, caramel, leather & plum flavors; mild booze heat emerged as this warmed.

Complex & delicious.

11.5oz bottle into a pint glass. Dated 12/22 unclear if bottled or best by date.

Looks pretty good. Dark brown body with amber highlights. Small off white head persists in good form throughout leaving spotted lacing.

Kind of an alcohol aroma with a malty base.

On tasting, nose is reversed. Sweet malty fruity flavor, abv drinks lower than listed.

Mouth close to full, finish sweet with a light bitterness right at the end.

Overall, really drinkable dark Belgian. Which could be dangerous.

Pours a translucent brown with a 1F cream colored head and light lacing.

Smells of bread, yeast and caramel.

Tastes of bread, caramel, and raisins with a lightly bitter alcohol warm finish.

Medium body and light carbonation. Lightly syrupy and dry mouthfeel.

This is a strong, sweet, relatively simple and light (for a quad) sipper.

(11.5 oz bottle, twist off cap, bottled on 2021-12-21; purchased single off shelf at Bella Vista... poured into a teku)

L: fairly-clear, deep tawny almost garnet-colored liquid; tight, two-finger high, bouncy-spongy, aged white foam stand... slow recede on the head, chunky lace in its wake, keeping a thick, bubbly collar and broken cap

S: unfiltered apple cider, caramel apple cake, soft sweet brandy-like booze essence, hint of xmas spice... excellent intensity, slightly muddy expression; little indication of sweetness

T: definite hard candy note up the middle, enveloped in a rather (medium-dark) bready malt concentrate; relatively dry on the back end, with some earthy yeast and phenolic spice lingering in the aftertaste, as well as that dominant apple cake element... second sip on, and it's mostly that fruited bready spiked smoothie... wish it's flavors were more refined and bold; little pops here

F: little bit of sweet spirit tingle delicately lighting up the back of the palate (roof)... stupid easy drinking, kind of like a Weizenbock (Aventinus comes to mind, hmm ^^^)... subtly sticky, foamy, lipsmacky

O: the 'abbey-style brown ale' on the label says a lot about its taste, as it's not so much in the mold of a La Trappe, for instance... I had this 2021 bottle or a 2018 bottle to choose from, and now I'm curious to try the older one... surprised it took me so long to get around to this; though it's a sipper, it's good not great, but maybe it ages well (2046)

Different.
For a supposed Quad, it's a bit light in both body and color, but the taste is amazing!
At 10.5%, the booze is hidden but not absent.
Great malt backbone with just enough bittering hops as to not leave it too sweet.
Quite a few floaters, but no prob there.
An impressive brew, definitely different.
Cool name, neat label.
Don't think I would get it again, but it was good.

Pours a fizzy frothy almost 1 finger off-white head with med retention, fair lacing, hazy dark molasses brown color

Nose brings lots of sweet malt and caramelized sugars, Belgian candi sugar, brown sugar molasses, dark sweet brown malts, biscuity toffee, rich caramel and hint of butterscotch, fair fruity esters, candied apple, date, fig, light perfumey alcohol

Taste again brings the sweet flavors but not overly sweet itself, Belgian candi sugar, toffee, brown sugar, etc, with more caramel and toffee, biscuity malts, more fruits with candied apple, fig, date, a touch of dried mulberry, sweet brown malts, hint of chocolate, fair bitterness as well with some spicy hops, light perfumey alcohol, fig paste late on sticky sweet finish, med spicy hops that get a bit high for a Belgian stytle

Mouth is med to fuller bod, med-lighter carb, light warming alcohol

Overall pretty nice but not as great as I remember, this was one of the breweries that opened my eyes to incredible craft beer, and especially Belgian style, but now that I'm re-visiting them I don't think they hold up as well, not sure if they changed over time, or I've really just learned a lot more about beer, but they're not bad, just not as incredible as my mind's eye makes them out to be

A - Hazy medium cherry brown color with dense off white lacing, light carbonation, and lots of floaties.

S - Balanced aroma with toasted toffee malt and spices. Some dark fruit, a little bit of candy sugar, and a little bit of leather and some faint anise.

T - Matches the nose with a nice balance between sweet toasted caramel malt and spice, along with a little bit of dark fruit and mild bitterness and the back side, slight residual green apple. The ABV is very well hidden in this beer.

M - Big medium body leaning towards thick with a slight bit of bubbly froth around the edges.

O - This is a unique "Quad" and different from any I've ever tried.

Pours reddish brown in colour. Tan head that is average size among this style. Leaves some lacing on the glass.
Smells like quite a sweet beer. Lots of sweet malt character here. Kind of a bread character and a lot of a fruit on the nose. Dark fruit like plum with a lot of red fruit and some caramel as well. Some very light alcohol on the nose.
The taste on this is very nice and complex. Lots of fruit and heavy malt that creates a nice balance. The beer is a little on the sweet side but very nice fruit, sugar, malt flavour profile. The alcohol flavour is enhanced by the sweetness of the beer and it does come through quite a bit for me. Feels as present as 15% stouts.
The mouthfeel is very nice and full bodied. Low carbonation is very nice on this one.

Overall, this beer feels about on par with Straffe Hendrik but maybe a little too sweet for my liking. For whatever reason, I think I like this one a bit more than Straffe Hendrik. I think maybe the mouthfeel/alcohol is a little better? Anyway, this feels very close to a world class beer, so I'm rating this one a bit above the average.

aged 11.5oz bottle

Pours a cloudy maroon red-brown with golden amber highlights around the edges, a good bit of sediment and a thin off-white foam head that sticks around in the glass with decent lacing. Smells rich, malty and fruity, a little strong, dark and roasty, with notes of red and black grapes, plum, cherries, red fruit, dark fruit, dark caramel, roasty toasted bready malts, hint of chocolate, dark toffee, molasses, sweet spice, with mild earthy hops. Tastes a little more complex and nicely aged, dark, slightly roasty toasted malts, caramel, chocolate, dark toffee, molasses, slight sherry, tangy dark fruit, red fruit, grapes, plums, cherries, hint of sweet spice, all layered on top of each other in a beautiful balance and complexity with mild earthy hops in the finish. Feels on the lighter side of medium bodied, creamy with smooth moderate drying carbonation. Overall a really nice quadrupel ale.
