Notes / Commercial Description:
Strong brown ale inspired by the beer brewed by Belgian Trappist monks. Very little bitterness, this beer has intense malty and sweet flavours, mixed with the taste of chocolate and caramel. It presents complex red fruit and spice flavours due to the type of yeast that is used during the brewing process. This beer is at its best only after it has aged for six months. The Rigor Mortis are complex beers designed and brewed with patience and care in the tradition of the great Belgian Abbey beers.

Pours a muddy brown color with copper edges and a half finger of head. The nose is slightly bready but not as bold as I might have expected. The body is hearty and big malts dominate the flavor profile.

My only complaint might be that there is a bit too much funkiness in the flavor as well.

11.5 ounce bottle poured into a Belgian style tulip

A: Pours a dark reddish brown with a tan colored head, good amount of bubbles streaming up the side, some light comes through around the edges, some slight lacing.

A: Figs, raisins, burnt brown sugar, toffee, caramel, Belgian yeast, smells really sweet and malty, smells good.

T: Like the nose, some sweet dark fruits, burnt brown sugar, toffee, Belgian yeast, incredibly smooth, finish is semi-dry with hints of dry, dark fruits, very tasty.

M: Carbonation really adds to the mouthfeel, semi-dry, alcohol does come through.

O: A very tasty beer, definitely going back to pick up a few more bottles for the cellar, at $6 a bottle I think this is a good value, very nice quad.

Indiscernible date coding a 1 & 5 marked for what ever that is worth

Pours a murky but effervescent brown with a sliver of tan head. Above average head retention & lacing

S: Figs, raisins cakeyness, some leather once warm

T: Figs, leafy hops & a slight booze burn up front. A little vanilla, plum & brandy sneaks in as this warms, along with raisin & fig and tangerine peel & leather. Finishes fruity, complex, dry & with lush oaky notes and just a kiss of Brandy

MF: Slight body, slightly over carbonated, smoothes out as it warms

ABV is well hidden, pretty good take on the style. This will age well I'm sure. I would buy this again. I like as much as Westy 12 taste-wise!

BOD 1/15, so this has had a year to age. Mahogany brown pour with suspended particulate matter. Outstanding head volume, normal lacing and retention.

Light, but typical Quad nose. Caramel, toffee, subtle charred grain, raisin, light prune, fig and chocolate hints over a sweet background.

Medium body with a semi-slick oily texture. World class carbonation for the style with a burst of effervescence in the middle and a solid prickly finish.

The outstanding flavor profile is intense, very complex and fairly balanced. The alcohol adds a bit of astringency, but the flavor is hidden well. It does makes it presence well known with the burn at the back of the throat. All flavors from the nose make an appearance. The sweeter ones arrive first and by the middle the malt sweetness is at its maximum. From the middle on, the prune and charred characteristics are most prevalent coupled with a slight astringency. Chocolate and toffee appear just before the finish. The finish is a slow warm fade of astringent prune with a subtle sweetness underneath.

sticky creamy mouthfeel, full of peach and dark fruits in a little warm feeling with some dates and belgian yeast than really taken their tool in this one, some deep alcoholics feeling raisin darker than darker! its just pretty sweet , strong and sweet . really good this winter. cheers my man madmax

Dark brown in color, somehow cloudy with a beautiful off-white creamy head. Sweet smell, you get dark licorice, caramel and malt in the nose, some yeasts too and a subtle hop aroma. In the mouth you taste dark fruits, caramel, black licorice, some roasted flavours too and dates. You don't really feel the fact that it's 10.5% ABV, there's a subtle alcohol taste and feel but you would expect it to be more present. Overall really good and (dangerously) drinkable.

Fills a Unibroue tulip glass with hazy garnet red. A modest and quickly dissipating head leaves spotty beige lace.

Mild aromas reveal faint dried fruit such as plum and raisin, while a hint of spice lingers in the background. Warmth brings out rye bread.

The flavor is subtle and complex with raisins and mild bitterness. Prunes and dates are present, though without sweetness. Some spice is detectable in a short, mild finish. Warmth amplifies the prunes and draws out more bitterness.

A rich and luscious full body with the texture of velvet. Light carbonation scours the tongue with tiny scrubbing bubbles. While alcohol is present, it is short of the 10.5% listed on the label.

This beer paired well with warm, creamy brie and pungent bleu cheese. All were accentuated by a warm, lazy, and sunny Sunday afternoon while reading and listening to nature.

This beer pours a ruddy brown color with rust colored highlights. It is topped with an inch of tan head that leaves little lacing.

It has a spicy smell along with some dark fruit. There is a sweet molasses aroma along with some alcohol.

The taste is sweet and has a spiciness from the yeast. I get molasses flavor with some date and fig. Alcohol flavor is present.

Medium mouthfeel

It is a pretty good beer. The alcohol could have been less prevalent.

Hazy brown with almost no head. Yeast, some clove, and maybe some pepper on the nose. Tastes of candy sugar, more bitter than I expect. Aftertaste not so good. Mouthfeel moderate and medium carbonation.

Bottled April 2010......

A- Pours a hazy brown, due to aged, suspended yeast and has a small yet dense head that settles reasonably quickly into a generous film over the beer. Carbonation is difficult to see and there is not much in terms of lacing. Not the best looking initially but above average.

S- Fresh baking, such as pie crust, fruity aromas such as spiced apple, rummy raisin, and apricot....spices such as nutmeg, cinnamon, golden sugar, toffee.....heavy Belgian yeast strains, honeyed sweetness, warming booze....lots happening and its all yummy!

T- WOW! Heavy chocolate overtones, both milk and dark, molasses, toffee nuts, french press coffee, yeasty creaminess, deep dark fresh vanilla bean pod, dark fruits such as figs and plums, slightly boozy, blended spices of winter, slightly burnt caramel....just rich....rich and robustly sweet. Well balanced between booze and sweet richness!

M/O- Full bodied and super creamy carbonation make this a heavily delightful beer. If one can handle it, please age this for several years as I did....you will not be disappointed!! This may very well age better than a good wine and I can only speculate how this would be with another couple of years under it's belt. Highly enjoyable and I wish this wasn't so hard to procure! WOW!!

This is definitely a brown colored ale as it pours the deepest tone of mahogany brown amber in terms of body. Head is a light tan standing at two fingers with some waves of lace as it slowly fades. Nose is a big mix of caramelized malts, toasty grains and a bit of smoke. Toasted bread, burnt marshmallows and some back ground jellied biscuit is all going on in the nose. Enters the mouth with such depth and character to its richness. Beers like this make me happy when they can show richness and nice malt character with out being to heavy and cloying. This beer is lush with wonderful fruit and malt balance to the flavor. Bold yet soft all in one. Mouthfeel is very much like a Belgium style as it should be, bold and attractively complex. This beer is amazingly drinkable.

2013 vintage on tap at Churchkey. Dark and fruity, slight alcohol warmth in the aroma along with some plums and raisins. Taste is smooth and more dried fruit sweetness with mild alcohol warmth on the finish. Easy to drink, but best to sip and savor.

Cloudy, opaque copper-brown with red highlights; virtually no head.
A fruity, red grape aroma with some citrus overtones
Rich flavor like red grape juice, some caramel, and just a hint of bitterness in the finish.
A slightly carbonated, sweet, and warm feel.
Overall, a complex taste; reminiscent of a sweet red wine. It's more sweet than bitter but not overdone. It would be a nice dessert beverage. My first impression was to rate this higher, but on later reflection considered that it it too much like a juice. This is an impressive piece of work, but I'll save the top ratings for beers that don't try to be wines, as nice as that may be.

Deep brown body with shades of head produced a very thing tan head that quickly disappeared. The nose has deep fruit aromas mixed with vanilla and prunes. Alcohol is very noticeable and hot. Sweet spicy flavors blend with apricots, figs, and apples, but there is always a strong alcohol in the back. I really enjoyed the flavors and smell, but wish the 10.5% were masked a bit better. Reading other reviews leads me to believe that this varies quite a bit between batches.

Dark brown, huge fluffy head.

Oak and sugar. Not that strong.

Sugary, caramel, molasses, maple sweet. For all that sugar, there is but a tinge of burn. There is a faint chocolate and biscuit quality, both work for it. Fairly simple, intense brew that's damn tough to put down. Easily one of the better quads.

Feels fine.

Reddish brown with very thin white head. Lighter than expected aroma of fig, plum, brown sugar and winter spices. Bigger taste with the same flavors as the nose up front and a little bite at the end with just slightly more hop bitterness than usual for a quad and some nice warming alcohol. Quite smooth. Not as complex as the classics, but very well balanced. A delicious sipper and one I'll be coming back to.

This is a big beer from Dieu du Ciel. I think the 10.5 % abv is hidden well. Though, it is intense and very sweet, not much bitterness. I thought it would get cloying but it was good until the last drop. I will pick up a bottle again if I see it.

Ruddy-brown with a few small hills of tan froth covering. Black grapes, beer bread and brown sugar to the nose. Tastes thick with black grapes, plum, persimmon, burnt grain, allspice, brown sugar, and pine. Slightly sticky with a medium-to-heavy body. Has a touch of heat at the very back of the throat.

An inviting and tasty Quad that wins with a myriad of subtleties.

11.5 oz bottle, poured into a snifter at approximately 40 degrees F.

Appearance: Pours a clearish yet dark ruby amber, which forms no head beyond a patchy cap and a ring of white. A few scattered streams of bubbles make their way steadily to the top of the beer.

Smell: Sweet toffee and caramel malt dominates the aroma, carrying a bit of candi sweetness along for the ride. There's something akin to cranberry drifting through the scent as well.

Taste: Right up front, this is a barrage of caramel, toffee, and candi sugar, and that does not relent through most of the tasting process. The ABV is boldly present as both heat and astringency, providing something of a medicinal taste and a lingering burn on the tongue. Hints of chocolate and something vaguely fruity are present, but buried under the sweetness and alcohol bite. There is a pronounced peppery spice, however, which makes itself known alongside the alcohol.

Mouthfeel: Sharp and hot, this is creamy while in the mouth, and then leaves a sensation not unlike drinking sandpaper.

Overall: I'm uncertain if perhaps I got hold of a bad bottle, or if I've been spoiled by other large ABV beers that conceal their payload, but this would not be a repeater for me. I am generally a fan of sweeter beers, but the heat and medicinal tinge taint the whole flavor profile for me.

Pours a cloudy brown with a middling foamy tan head that never settles to much more than a thin film with a ring. Okay retention; tiny specks of lacing. (3.75)

Very sweet, fresh and slightly earthy. Caramelized sugar, spices, dark bready, some soft nuttiness. (4)

T:
Rich with mellow sweetness. Soft, even, rich layers of warm nuttiness and yeast with some prominent sweetness, red fruits, sugar, roasted hints. (4.25)

M:
Smooth and medium-full bodied with a warm alcohol character and a slightly lingering finish. (3.75)

O:
Very good Quad (judging by the 'ABT').
This is a beer that is very convincingly Belgian but is just missing a little oomph.
It pours all right but certainly is lacking a fat head. The nose and flavor go well together with the former being soft and inviting and the latter sweet and boozy. It drinks well and is quite delicious. It could be a little richer in general and a little less alcoholic for my tastes, but it very good regardless.
Would have again; worth trying if you come across it. (4)

2/9 - Monk’s Pub (Chicago) - Draft - This is my first quadruple and first Dieu de ciel offering, and it is one of my favorite beers of all time. I went from trying something new to enjoying four pours of an amazing beer. Very strong smell of coffee and fruity. The taste, however is very strong, malty beer. The beer feels heavy, great in the mouth, and goes down smooth. Rigor Mortis - definitely a beer to die for, and highly recommended from this beer lover. Cheers!

Good head retention. Sweet aroma with slight coffee character. Unibroue-like yeast character.

Hint of bitter/stale coffee grounds on palate, strong sweetness, strong alcohol.

A: (3/3) Dark toffee brown with a light haze and thin but well-retained head
S: (9/12) Pretty strong raisin/apple and alcohol with funky notes and a little bit of burnt caramel, and I even get a little banana when I go back for sip number two
T: (16/20) Stronger on the burnt caramel and chocolate than the fruit
M: (4/5) Pretty solid body with very little carbonation, pretty dry finish
O: (7/10) Yeah, I know my review is all over the map, but the beer kind of is, too. I picked it up at a cellar clearance sale , and then left it in my fridge for a couple months, so I think I aged it properly (notches say '05). None of the flavors really sing to me, but it’s certainly a solid beer.

Bottle from Colonial Spirits.
Pours a slightly hazy deep chestnut with a decent sized but short lived off white head. Massive chunks of something floating in this viscous liquid. Aromas are heavy on the fruit. Dark stone fruits with bits of pineapple atop a brown sugary caramel base with just a touch of alcohol. The flavor follows the aroma. Lots of tropical fruitiness with a solid brown sugary base to back it up. Pleasant warming alcohol. Medium body with a somewhat drying finish. Light level of carbonation. Nice sipper once you get past the appearance. This may be an older bottle, its got notches that are off centered from the numbers so I can't tell.

Poured a rich, cloudy reddish brown with nice chunks of yeast and a thin ring of head. A good looking quad, it could do with a bit more head, but otherwise it looks fantastic. Scents of dark fruit, with notes of plum, raisin, fig, date, dark cherry and prune, along with aromas of brown sugar, bread crust, and rich, sweet, bready malt, fruity esters of an indeterminate type and a heavy presence of alcohol. Overall impression of aroma is of a nice quadrupel that is rich, sweet, fruity and boozy. It is quite nice. Flavor begins sweet and malty with notes of rich, sweet brown bread and dark fruit, mostly raisin, prune, plum, sweet cherry and caramel with a hint of milk chocolate and some limited spicy Belgian yeast phenols. This moves into a sweet middle that continues flavors of caramel, sweet bready malt, medium-light flavors of milk chocolate and dark fruit, with the fruits mentioned above, but at a light level. Finish is sweet with moderate notes of milk chocolate, caramel, bread crust, toast, sweet bready malt, medium-light alcohol warmth, and light red cherry and plum on the swallow. Light spiciness is present at the end. Aftertaste is medium-sweet with notes of toasted bread, bread crust, caramel, chocolate, white pepper and light alcohol. Overall impression of flavor is of a rich, sweet, malty, dark fruit-filled, slightly boozy and complex quadrupel. It is an excellent example of the style, not the best, but very pleasing on the tongue. Mouthfeel is medium-full bodied and creamy with medium-high carbonation and a medium, smooth alcohol burn. Overall impression of mouthfeel is of a true to style quadrupel that fits the richer Abbey style, rather than the drier Trappist form, more St. Bernardus than Achel Extra. Very nice. Overall this is a nice quadrupel. It is rich and complex in aroma and flavor, hitting the style quite well and it has a lovely, full mouthfeel that is pleasant and aids the flavor. A very nice quadrupel and I am looking forward to seeing how it ages.
