Strong brown ale inspired by the beer brewed by Belgian Trappist monks. Very little bitterness, this beer has intense malty and sweet flavours, mixed with the taste of chocolate and caramel. It presents complex red fruit and spice flavours due to the type of yeast that is used during the brewing process. This beer is at its best only after it has aged for six months. The Rigor Mortis are complex beers designed and brewed with patience and care in the tradition of the great Belgian Abbey beers.

I began this latest quest on Monday, which was Canadian Thanksgiving Day, by scouring my backlog to see what Canadian beers might lay in wait. Unfortunately for my plans, two of the first three were a**kicking AMLs from Labatt & then I was on a planned expedition yesterday. This is less hair of the dog and more like the horse that I rode in on. This bottle was procured at Hunger 'n' Thirst here in Lancaster, PA and seems to indicate a January 2014 bottling date. Mmm.

From the bottle: " Rigor Mortis Abt is a full-bodied brown ale inspired by the Quadrupel beer style brewed by Belgian monks. Offering very little bitterness, this beer has intense malty and sweet flavours, mixed with the taste of chocolate and caramel coming from the malt. It presents complex red fruits and spice flavours due to the Belgian-type yeast we use to ferment it. This beer is at its best after it has aged for at least six months."

No problem as to that last. My problem stems from the fact that they put such a marvelous beer into a screwed-up screw-top bottle! I will buy the idea of oxygen-fixing crown caps, but not when a thread exists that may lead to oxygen being leeched into the bottle & its contents. Smyert botylok! Deprived of the Pop! & not wanting to rouse any lees, I went with a gentle pour. An in-glass swirl raised a brief finger of foamy, light-tan head that quickly fell back to wisps. Color was a slightly hazy Copper-Brown (SRM = > 17, < 22). Nose had a rich chocolate & caramel scent, along with a leatheriness and a slight alcohol burn. I am sure that it is very hot when young, hence their urge to allow it to age, even for just six months. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was candy-sweet! It put me in mind of a 100 Grand bar with its caramel and chocolate flavors, but this also had a fruitiness, not necessarily of "red fruits", but more like dried, dark fruits, like prunes, figs, raisins & dates. Following my initial swallow, I also caught a light alcohol burn, especially on the tongue, but creeping into my sinuses. Also of interest & note was the fact that it was beginning to clarify as it warmed. It was also throwing more fusel alcohol heat than it had been cold, so the two may be interrelated somehow. The warmth intensified the chocolate flavor, making it very sweet. Finish was sweet, very chocolaty, but with caramel and fruit flavors underlying the chocolate. I fully agree with putting some age on this one & I would recommend it more as a dessert beer, or in lieu of dessert, with coffee & perhaps a cigar.

Bottle dated 2015-11-02.

Pours reminiscent of a brown ale, although a bit more murky and rusty. Barely any head and certainly without any kind of retention. The expected dark fruit qualities on the nose, especially fig and raisins. This is followed by a sickly sweet almost syrupy sweetness. Really missing any complexity to be labeled as a quad and very unbalanced as the sweetness leaves it one dimensional.

Will definitely avoid this going forward.

This beer can fuck off. Doesnt look appetizing, looks like prune juice. Dirty prune juice. Aroma was fusel candied raisins. Ugh.

Taste was just bitter dark fruit tasting like it was 80% abv. Bitter roastiness is there if you can get passed the heat. Fuck this is just brutal shit. I can't believe how loved it is. Nothing good about it for my tastes.

Thinnish head, just under half a finger, dark tan to light brown in hue, even surface, retention is adequate but just that, minimal stickiness to the lacing. The liquid is a deep brown color, darkened further yet by the vast amount of floaties in the glass, more yellowish rims, only a few scattered bubbles are visible. The nose is very boozy, close to rubbing alcohol in intensity, peaty with coffee, mocha, caramel notes which somehow do little to sweeten things up, a salty edge tends to cancel out a lot of the fig, raisin, plum, cherry fruit scents, wet herbaceousness its final calling card. Full-bodied, somewhat flatfooted due to the lackluster carbonation. Coconut, licorice, orange peel, some vague yeastiness. Again, the booziness distracts and unbalances. Charcoal, earth and charred driftwood take ground in the mid-palate. The cherry, plum, golden raisin, fig is not that sugary and competes halfheartedly. It tends to peter out before what you’d expect to be the finish. All this is not to say it’s a poor quality beer, more so that one expects better harmonization which would equate to a smoother, lengthier experience. Needs to be served with something which would account for its deficiencies.

Poured into a snifter.
A - Pours a dark brown with a small head that goes away quickly.
S - The aroma is not strong but what I get is caramel.
T - Malty and sweet and soooooooooooo drinkable.
M - Medium mouth feel, lower than average carbonation.
O - Very good beer. Does remind me more of brown ale (which is on the bottle) than a quad as listed on BA. So good I drank it quickly and did not take good notes. Buy this beer!

Very drinkable but a little unbalanced, even for the style, to compete with the best Belgians. The sweetness is front and center. Would gladly have it again, though...

Not so much a quad as it is a brown ale. Nice medium roast malts with some Belgian sugar sweetness to round it out. Again, not a quad but a solid brown ale brewed with Belgian candi sugar and fermented with Belgian yeast.

I’m growing a deep love for Dieu du Ciel... All the beers I’ve had the opportunity to try from them has been so good!
So this is a happy day!

The beer pours dark mahogny colored, clear but with a lot of yeast sediment so it looks cloudy. Very creamy, beige, head. More than two finger high at the beginning and slowly fades to a thin beige head with a huge amount of lacing on the glass.

Nose: Ohhhh... this is so good! Dark fruit (raisin, plum), cherry, red apples, rhubarb, nuts, jam, charcuterie, caramel malt and Belgian yeast.
Taste: Brown sugar, malt, fudge, toffee, brandy, plum, prune, vanilla and Belgian yeast.
Mouth: Full body. Light and smooth carbonation. Complex texture. Smooth. Sweet/dry ending. A nice bitterness.

The aroma is fruit forward with fresh cherries, raisins, craisins, and some honey sweetness.

The flavor follows with honey sweetness as if it were used in the beer with raisins, sweet dark fruit, onto a dry, smooth with finish with restrained hints of spice as the sweetness and fruity esters dominate. The mouthfeel is smooth and almost syrupy.

From a 341ml bottle, dated 2015-11-02. Served in a Dieu du Ciel! tulip, of course.

Pours a not-quite-opaque reddish-brown - can I say 'roan?' - with a generous finger-and-a-half of sudsy tan foam. It's about a three minute head leaving a fairish amount of loose, sloppy lacing.

Smells of brown sugar and cloves, brown bread, apple jam and clean earth.

Taste is unapologetically sweet: bready malt, caramel cremes, apple juice, figs, brandied raisins, oriental spices, funky earth, hemp and lots of Belgian yeast. Very little discernible bitterness, it's sweet at the beginning, sweet in the middle, and sweet and a little charred at the end - with a sweet, little boozy burn at the goodbye.

Mouthfeel is medium-bodied, slick and mouth-coating, fairly low carbonation, clean finishing.

Overall, an enjoyable quad but, considering the size of the abv, everything seemed a little... muted? to the point I'm not sure another year of aging would substantially improve it. Besides, I could be dead in a year. Still, it is indeed a serviceable, tasty beverage and I would undoubtedly drink it again.

This style can really get out of hand. For what this cost, you expect it to keep things perfectly in check, but they are a bit overly fruity and wacked out. I know it would have been better with a year on it but this one is only about 6 months old.

The look is deep reddish brown with fine head. The aroma gives up the sweet fruity yeasty taste you expect from a quad and you are going to get from this one. It has a nice burn aftertaste. I expected something darker and more unique, but this brew is right in the mainstream of big Belgians - nothing unique - just very good.

These kinds of nasty Belgians can be really cool. This one is just plain too expensive - there are equal quality examples of the style for much lower prices. Not recommended.

Pours a muddy brown color with copper edges and a half finger of head. The nose is slightly bready but not as bold as I might have expected. The body is hearty and big malts dominate the flavor profile.

My only complaint might be that there is a bit too much funkiness in the flavor as well.

11.5 ounce bottle poured into a Belgian style tulip

A: Pours a dark reddish brown with a tan colored head, good amount of bubbles streaming up the side, some light comes through around the edges, some slight lacing.

A: Figs, raisins, burnt brown sugar, toffee, caramel, Belgian yeast, smells really sweet and malty, smells good.

T: Like the nose, some sweet dark fruits, burnt brown sugar, toffee, Belgian yeast, incredibly smooth, finish is semi-dry with hints of dry, dark fruits, very tasty.

M: Carbonation really adds to the mouthfeel, semi-dry, alcohol does come through.

O: A very tasty beer, definitely going back to pick up a few more bottles for the cellar, at $6 a bottle I think this is a good value, very nice quad.

Indiscernible date coding a 1 & 5 marked for what ever that is worth

Pours a murky but effervescent brown with a sliver of tan head. Above average head retention & lacing

S: Figs, raisins cakeyness, some leather once warm

T: Figs, leafy hops & a slight booze burn up front. A little vanilla, plum & brandy sneaks in as this warms, along with raisin & fig and tangerine peel & leather. Finishes fruity, complex, dry & with lush oaky notes and just a kiss of Brandy

MF: Slight body, slightly over carbonated, smoothes out as it warms

ABV is well hidden, pretty good take on the style. This will age well I'm sure. I would buy this again. I like as much as Westy 12 taste-wise!

BOD 1/15, so this has had a year to age. Mahogany brown pour with suspended particulate matter. Outstanding head volume, normal lacing and retention.

Light, but typical Quad nose. Caramel, toffee, subtle charred grain, raisin, light prune, fig and chocolate hints over a sweet background.

Medium body with a semi-slick oily texture. World class carbonation for the style with a burst of effervescence in the middle and a solid prickly finish.

The outstanding flavor profile is intense, very complex and fairly balanced. The alcohol adds a bit of astringency, but the flavor is hidden well. It does makes it presence well known with the burn at the back of the throat. All flavors from the nose make an appearance. The sweeter ones arrive first and by the middle the malt sweetness is at its maximum. From the middle on, the prune and charred characteristics are most prevalent coupled with a slight astringency. Chocolate and toffee appear just before the finish. The finish is a slow warm fade of astringent prune with a subtle sweetness underneath.

sticky creamy mouthfeel, full of peach and dark fruits in a little warm feeling with some dates and belgian yeast than really taken their tool in this one, some deep alcoholics feeling raisin darker than darker! its just pretty sweet , strong and sweet . really good this winter. cheers my man madmax

Dark brown in color, somehow cloudy with a beautiful off-white creamy head. Sweet smell, you get dark licorice, caramel and malt in the nose, some yeasts too and a subtle hop aroma. In the mouth you taste dark fruits, caramel, black licorice, some roasted flavours too and dates. You don't really feel the fact that it's 10.5% ABV, there's a subtle alcohol taste and feel but you would expect it to be more present. Overall really good and (dangerously) drinkable.

Fills a Unibroue tulip glass with hazy garnet red. A modest and quickly dissipating head leaves spotty beige lace.

Mild aromas reveal faint dried fruit such as plum and raisin, while a hint of spice lingers in the background. Warmth brings out rye bread.

The flavor is subtle and complex with raisins and mild bitterness. Prunes and dates are present, though without sweetness. Some spice is detectable in a short, mild finish. Warmth amplifies the prunes and draws out more bitterness.

A rich and luscious full body with the texture of velvet. Light carbonation scours the tongue with tiny scrubbing bubbles. While alcohol is present, it is short of the 10.5% listed on the label.

This beer paired well with warm, creamy brie and pungent bleu cheese. All were accentuated by a warm, lazy, and sunny Sunday afternoon while reading and listening to nature.

This beer pours a ruddy brown color with rust colored highlights. It is topped with an inch of tan head that leaves little lacing.

It has a spicy smell along with some dark fruit. There is a sweet molasses aroma along with some alcohol.

The taste is sweet and has a spiciness from the yeast. I get molasses flavor with some date and fig. Alcohol flavor is present.

Medium mouthfeel

It is a pretty good beer. The alcohol could have been less prevalent.

Hazy brown with almost no head. Yeast, some clove, and maybe some pepper on the nose. Tastes of candy sugar, more bitter than I expect. Aftertaste not so good. Mouthfeel moderate and medium carbonation.

Bottled April 2010......

A- Pours a hazy brown, due to aged, suspended yeast and has a small yet dense head that settles reasonably quickly into a generous film over the beer. Carbonation is difficult to see and there is not much in terms of lacing. Not the best looking initially but above average.

S- Fresh baking, such as pie crust, fruity aromas such as spiced apple, rummy raisin, and apricot....spices such as nutmeg, cinnamon, golden sugar, toffee.....heavy Belgian yeast strains, honeyed sweetness, warming booze....lots happening and its all yummy!

T- WOW! Heavy chocolate overtones, both milk and dark, molasses, toffee nuts, french press coffee, yeasty creaminess, deep dark fresh vanilla bean pod, dark fruits such as figs and plums, slightly boozy, blended spices of winter, slightly burnt caramel....just rich....rich and robustly sweet. Well balanced between booze and sweet richness!

M/O- Full bodied and super creamy carbonation make this a heavily delightful beer. If one can handle it, please age this for several years as I did....you will not be disappointed!! This may very well age better than a good wine and I can only speculate how this would be with another couple of years under it's belt. Highly enjoyable and I wish this wasn't so hard to procure! WOW!!

This is definitely a brown colored ale as it pours the deepest tone of mahogany brown amber in terms of body. Head is a light tan standing at two fingers with some waves of lace as it slowly fades. Nose is a big mix of caramelized malts, toasty grains and a bit of smoke. Toasted bread, burnt marshmallows and some back ground jellied biscuit is all going on in the nose. Enters the mouth with such depth and character to its richness. Beers like this make me happy when they can show richness and nice malt character with out being to heavy and cloying. This beer is lush with wonderful fruit and malt balance to the flavor. Bold yet soft all in one. Mouthfeel is very much like a Belgium style as it should be, bold and attractively complex. This beer is amazingly drinkable.

2013 vintage on tap at Churchkey. Dark and fruity, slight alcohol warmth in the aroma along with some plums and raisins. Taste is smooth and more dried fruit sweetness with mild alcohol warmth on the finish. Easy to drink, but best to sip and savor.

Cloudy, opaque copper-brown with red highlights; virtually no head.
A fruity, red grape aroma with some citrus overtones
Rich flavor like red grape juice, some caramel, and just a hint of bitterness in the finish.
A slightly carbonated, sweet, and warm feel.
Overall, a complex taste; reminiscent of a sweet red wine. It's more sweet than bitter but not overdone. It would be a nice dessert beverage. My first impression was to rate this higher, but on later reflection considered that it it too much like a juice. This is an impressive piece of work, but I'll save the top ratings for beers that don't try to be wines, as nice as that may be.

Deep brown body with shades of head produced a very thing tan head that quickly disappeared. The nose has deep fruit aromas mixed with vanilla and prunes. Alcohol is very noticeable and hot. Sweet spicy flavors blend with apricots, figs, and apples, but there is always a strong alcohol in the back. I really enjoyed the flavors and smell, but wish the 10.5% were masked a bit better. Reading other reviews leads me to believe that this varies quite a bit between batches.
