Very Good
Notes: This German-style pale ale gets its name from the city of Cologne (Köln in German), where it was first brewed. Although simple, this beer offers lightly fruity and delicately hoppy aromas. It has a generous, malty flavour that is well-balanced by a subtle hop bitterness. This beer was first crafted at our Montreal location in March, 2006. Dieu du Ciel! will donate 10 cents for each bottle of Sentinelle sold to the L’institut de recherche et d’information socio-économiques (IRIS) in order to support it in its mission in disseminating an alternative view to the dominant neoliberal discourse.

Lovely pale gold color with thin persistent head and plenty of fine bubbling action. First sip is quite surprisingly bitter and lemony. A wiezen style aroma is present with some lemon and floral overtones. It is quite refreshing and easy to drink without being insipid. Lots to like for under $2 can.

From a 12oz bottle, dated 07/07/16. Served in a cervoise. Yes, that's right; a cervoise.

Pours a clear, cheerful sunshiney yellow with lots of big, busy bubbles and a finger of fluffy white head. Retention is OK and leaves a big fat sticky ring in the glass that stays with me to the end.

The nose is fresh and bright with crackery malt and sharp yeast, citron and peppers.

Taste is a malt hammer, a hard, bready cereal bite accompanied by bitter tree leaves, pine sap, lemon rind and peppery spice.

Feel is medium-bodied, amply carbonated, crisp and dry.

Overall, an interesting and tasty kölsch. The first sip made me jump back in surprise because it wasn't what I was expecting but then I settled back and sucked down the rest rather quickly. I guess I've been drinking wimpy-assed kölsches until now.

Slightly veiled straw color with moderate activity. Thick foamy and creamy white 4 finger head, lasting around 15-20 minutes, with generous legs. Flavors of lemon, lime, barley, wheat, corn, floral spices. Moderate residual cereal sweetness, more bitter and highly hoppy, but very well balanced and almost flowery. Slick and smooth medium body with crispy carbonation. Medium strength finish, strangely coarse yet fresh, sharp yeasty citrusy feel, with thick dry leafy noble hops that lingers for a while. Great taste, highly pleasant, and properly intensified. Extra fresh and zesty. To bad it hardly smells anything. Similar to a dry hopped American Blonde Ale, but even more crisp and uplifting, without that "wet" feeling in the hops. Overall superb quality craft.

Light, slightly carbonated, clear yellow color with medium head. Delicious balance of malt, light hops and citrus (more lemon) flavours and aromas. Slight bitter finish but smooth to off set it.

Pours straw yellow with a light head that dissipates quickly. The aoma is light and bready. Flavour has more hop than usual but not obtrusive and balances. The malt sweetness beautifully - some hay.

Yellow to green color, elegant and creamy whote foam.
At the nose light malt, some hay and grassy notes.
Taste: average malty start, then a sharp bitterness (maybe a bit too much for the style), again grassy, with a light citric finish.
Bitter aftertaste, average long, light citric end.

Straw color and clear. Decent starting head but it settles to only rim bubbles and no lace.

Golden malt nose.

Creamy and light. Slightly grainy. Highly carbonated with a moderate body. The swallow and aftertaste is all pale malt and a very minor hop touch.

Looks like a standard lager, see through blonde beer with a little bit of visible carbonation and a thin white head.

As far as Kölsh go I think this is my favorite aroma from a beer of the style. Really nice cereals smell.

The taste does not disappoint either, really strong cereals notes. Would benefit from a little more bitterness to be crisper.

Nice mouth feel really easy to drink. Like I mentioned more hops would make it better.

Quite a malty flavour, bready. Some grassy hop flavours with a hint of lemon. Finish is very balanced between bitter and sweet. Medium bodied and carbonated, easy drinking. Very faint scent.

a very well made and very well hopped beer! crystal clear from the tap, hardly even golden, more of a champagne color to it, really light, with a full fluffy inch of white head with excellent retention and intricate lacing as it drinks. the aroma here is quite hoppy, as is the flavor, not that its over the top, just more hoppy than i am used to in kolsch type, lightly citrusy, lime zest and grassy, noble hops i would think, but super clean in here and bright, fresher tasting than normal for these varietals, whatever they are. the beer is super easy going too, with some light minerals and a crackery european yeast that almost tastes like a lager strain, and the beer is super dry and crisp like a lager too, really fast finishing, well carbonated, refreshing, and poundable, yet more flavorful than most of these ever are because of the fresh hop taste to it and attendant bitterness. honestly one of the more delicious and nuanced kolsch types i have had in some time. dieu du ciel has been a longtime favorite, and its always a pleasure to encounter beers of theirs i have not had before, especially on tap. this is killer if you are looking for something on the lighter side but still full of flavor!

Lemon gold body, clear with some chill haze; sizzling, cloud-white head has fairly good retention, lingering for a couple of minutes.
Aroma is pale malt and a faint citrus scent, lemon. Whisper of coriander too, or similar spice. As expected, it's light overall.
Clean and crisp, bready with a slight tang like sourdough. There's hop bitterness in the off-dry finish, but it's not intense by any means, and provides great balance to the sweet malt. I get a dash of orange zest too. Medium body and carbonation.

Makes for a solid option to crush during summer heatwaves, easy-drinking and refreshing, with flavour that is interesting without being too interesting. Could pair with bbq, mexican, burgers.

Pours a crystal clear light straw with two fingers soapy white head that ends up as a decent thin coating. Okay retention; some scummy lacing. (4)

Rich toasted malts and grassy hops, leaves, lemon zest. (3.75)

Layers of bready malt flavors interspersed with rustic, spicy, earthy hop background. (4)

Light body, medium plus carbonation, dry as a bone, slight hop afterburn. (4)

Good take on a kölsch.
Pours nice enough, clear as could be. Both the smell and the flavor are rich and flavorful with a nice balance between the malt and hops and a nice character in each (toast and grass). It is a very drinkable beer, pretty light, tasty, not overly expensive.
Definitely a crowd-pleaser. Would have again. (4.25)
