Inspired by the German Rauchbier – smoked beers from the Bamberg region – Charbonnière is a dark amber beer with a distinctly smokey aroma, obtained by the use of wood-smoked malt during the brewing process. It is sustained by a slightly sweet malt backbone, permitting the smoked malt to express itself freely with every sip.

341ml bottle poured into a pint glass

Appearance - medium brown, decent size foamy off white head, can't see much carbonation. A fair amount of lacing.

Smell - well, smoked malts.. caramel, hops. Saw someone else compare this to a camp fire smell - I couldn't agree more.

Taste & Mouth - really smoked tasting.. for some reason its comes through as meaty to me. Almost like a piece of smoked brisket. Also fruitiness, coffee beans, and a slightly bitter hop finish. Also something musty, call me crazy but do I taste blue cheese?

Drink - This is definitely an interesting beer, but not my sort of thing. Points for originality, but lacks drinkability. 1 is more than enough.

Smoke in our beer, that's good!
There are days like today when we would like to spend the afternoon sipping a good whisky. But well, I'm not that into my alcoholism yet, so I fell back on this delicious beer from the brewery Dieu du ciel. A cloud of smoke emanating from it leads us to believe for a moment that we are indeed on the Scottish Islay. Wonderful!

Very smoky beer. It should be pared with something like smoked salmon, baked beans, ham or gouda cheese. Might be good with a meal at the maple sugar shack! On Its own it takes a while to get used to.

Purchased at Dapanneur AS in Montreal for $3.00 for a 341ml bottle. Served at 6deg C in a draught glass,

A- Opens well and pours a 1/2" high white head that films out within 2mins. Medium to dark brown colour and filtered clear

S- Smoke.

T- Smoke. The really bad artificial smoke that you get from liquid smoke.

M- Dry

O- Disliked this brew. I tried by best but this one was a drain pour after 3 sips. Will never buy again

Food Pairing

This smoky brew does not get a match due to being a drain pour. If you like smoky brews then try with smoked brisket or something like that

Enjoy

Grabbed in Montreal, spilt with rudzud

Very little head, semi clear cranberry chestnut color.

Nose is loaded with smoke, smoked campfire malt, big time smoked gouda, toasted malts, little acrid, biscuity.

Taste more smoked malt, rind of a smoked gouda, little campfire, smoldering log, acrid burnt smoke, little reddish candy malt with thin feel. Little metallic, reddish candy. Finish bitter cheese rind and smoke, sticky syrupy.

Mouth is med thinner feeling bod, light carb, sticky syrupy.

Overall man have these guys gone down hill. Seems like everything they make these days is terrible.

Split with JLindros, roughly one year old.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great a crystal clear mahogany hue with a thin head that fades to leave light wisps.

S - Aromas of smokey malts, campfire, smoked gouda, light caramel.

T - Taste is similar to the nose, very smokey sweet malts. Not assertive campfire, bit just in your face smoke. Loads of smoked gouda cheese.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, that and the smoke makes this really oppressive.

O - Overall this beer was a huge disappointment. The smoke is rather awful with that cheese aspect.

Bought at Broue Ha Ha in Gatineau, Qc. Well, it's smoked beer! I find it a little tricky to know what to say about it other than that. Happy to drink the 4 that came in the pack, not sure I'd pick this again over other standard DDC offerings. Could be very interesting with the right food pairings.

Appearance: Dark copper, almost maple taffee colour. 1/2" head that lasted a couple minutes. Very distinct rings as the volume went down.
Smell: Smoked malt and caramel
Taste: Smoke and caramel
Feel: Acidity and carbonation cut through the smoke. Quite long and not unpleasant.

Overall; My first smoked beer. I didn't think I would like it, but I did.

Poured into a 16 oz bar glass straight down.

Poured a clean brown with 3 fingets creamy off white head, the head died down quick but it retained a little film over the top the whole time.

Aroma - SMOKE, like the smoke you'd smell at a campfire, wow is this smell strong, underneath i smell buscuity malts and some caramel.

Taste - The smoke overpowers the other flavors again but what follows are those same malts and the caramel in the smell, very smooth.

Mouth feel - Medium-light creamy body with decent carbonation.

Overall - this is something different as I dont usually get smoked beers or like them. Another great DDC concoction.

Copper-red in color with a small carbonation and little head. Intense smell of smoke, bbq, firepit, bacon even. Nice smoky flavour too. For me it's not as good as the Aecht Schlenkerla but it's still really good.

Appearance - Pours a chestnut brown with a finger of bubbly head.

Smell - smoked malts, smoked meat aromas, campfire smoke.

Taste - Dominated by the smoked malts followed by a hint of smoked meat and campfire aromas.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes dry with a lingering smokiness.

Overall - A smoked beer that has the elements in place. However, I feel they weren't used to their full capacity. The aroma I felt was far superior to the taste.
