Style: American Double / Imperial Stout
Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.50%
Availability: Rotating
Notes / Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel is an intensely black and dense stout in which coffee is infused during the brewing process. The result is a strong beer where prominent roasted flavours coalesce with a powerful taste of coffee. Once fermentation is complete, the beer is aged several months in bourbon oak barrels, which imparts some vanilla and woody aromas as well as bourbon flavours.

Bottle generously shared by Franck during a nice visit to Lille
A: Black, almost no head. Pours very dense.
S: Nose is on coffee and chili pepper, which is quite surprising because this is completely absent from the regular version. Spices, light vanilla, but overall the bourbon is not much present.
T: The palate is very much on coffee with a light woody sweetness, notes of bitter chocolate; with chili and spices. Finishes on coffee bitterness.
M: Thick, not much carbonated. Finishes warmth but with a welcome dryness.
O: A very good version of the Péché Mortel. I really can't know why there were those chilies in this bottle as it doesn't appear in other reviews but we all got this from the nose and palate. Anyway it was still really drinkable and enjoyable. Thanks Franck!

So smooth and very drinkable. Smells great, with lots of bourbon, bitter coffee, pepper, and oakiness. Not as full bodied as BCBS, but extremely drinkable, with just the right amount of mild sweetness. A very nice compliment to the regular Peche Mortel. I could drink this every day. And you could too. Delicious.

2012 vintage, thanks to rudzud for sharing this bottle as I never reviewed it from The Festival in Worcester a couple years ago.
Very small head, fades quickly, nice legs but little lacing, just about pitch black.
Nose lots of dark malts, some dark fruits, raisiny like, then fudgey cocoa, dark choc, chewy milk choc, little coffee, light bourbon and some toasted oak barrel. Lush choc too. Little oxidation.
Taste creamy choc, lush smooth rich choc, mild vanilla and light coffee, dark choc fudge with some bitter roasty char, faint faint booze warmth, little oxidation again. Light toasted oak and faint bourbon. Finish is bitter with little roast, more fudgey cocoa and mouth coating sticky lingering, little coffee and bourbon oak barrel.
Mouth is fuller bod, lighter carb, smooth creamy.
Overall great but mild oxidation due to screw cap, otherwise amazing. I remember this being ridiculously phenomenal at The Festival, so I wonder if this has dropped off, maybe I'll get to try it again someday and confirm.

11-24-2015 bourbon bottle, back to back with a regular 3-2015.
I've had so many beers that are absolutely ruined by a barrel, but thankfully this one is actually significantly improved, which is crazy because the regular brew is so great!
Pours with a nice head, only a thin ring of retention, but shows some leg.
Aroma is so much more complex, as the regular version is overwhelmed with coffee.
The coffee flavour is more subdued, with a pleasant wood throughout and some bourbon in the finish.
Body is smoother and seems much less acidic.
I was sceptical, but this just might be the best beer in Canada. I'm seriously surprised how much better this is with some time in a barrel. Well done... World class.
Thanks Papat444!

From a 12oz bottle, dated 2016-11-07. Served in a tulip.
Pours a richly opaque, oily oaken-black with a big finger-and-a-half of mocha, bubbly, sudsy foam. Gradually subsides to a fizzy film and a fat collar around the glass with a light curtain of lace.
Relatively meager in the aroma department, mostly caramel fudge, smoke and copper.
Tastes of vanilla caramel and pipe tobacco, rich and unctuous. The rich bourbon and bitter coffee are there, but understated, as supporting players, they're not stealing the show. Roasted malt, damp punky oak, cacao, plum, clean earthiness and perfume. Finishes with a little burnt toast and milk chocolate with smoky booze lingering in the sinuses and warming the gullet.
Feel is smooth, creamy, mouth-coating and medium-thick bodied. The beer is surprisingly brightly carbonated - surprising in the sense that, it is so creamy, that you're not aware of how well carbonated it is until you feel for it. Should be a sipper, but I can't make myself slow down.
Dieu di Ciel! answers the question, 'how do you make Péché Mortel even better.' Stunning. Thanks to @TheDoctor!

Nice revelation. Love the regular Peche.
From a 341ml bottle Chilled. Poured to large tulip.
Dark oily black colour. Promiscuous tan head.
Bourbon on the nose. No disguise here. Bitter chocolate as well.
It's all Peche Mortel with bourbon. Perfect blend for me. So good.

Bottle of 2013 vintage at 50 degrees into snifter
Aroma of coffee and bourbon
Head average (2.5 cm), light brown, creamy, slowly diminishing to 2 mm layer
Lacing good – multiple rings of tiny bubbles
Body very dark brown to black, opaque
Flavor of coffee, bourbon, a little vanillin, and light chocolate predominate. It ends with a light bitterness, but is not unpleasant.
Palate full, creamy, soft carbonation.
This is a fantastic beer, one of the best I’ve ever had. It’s so good I don’t want to drink it because I only have one bottle and if I drink it, it’ll be gone.
