Péché Mortel is an intensely black and dense stout in which coffee is infused during the brewing process. The result is a strong beer where prominent roasted flavours coalesce with a powerful taste of coffee. Once fermentation is complete, the beer is aged several months in bourbon oak barrels, which imparts some vanilla and woody aromas as well as bourbon flavours.

Draught. BITTER and boozy. Tastes like I'm eating espresso beans.

Tried a sample at the brewery in july 25. Just like the regular this one didn't disappoint. Potent but deceptive with coffee bourbon nose and finish. Coal black pour with small collar.

11.5 ounce bottle, bottled 2022-12-30 stamped on the label, big thanks to Brutaltruth for this one! Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with around a half inch tan head. Head retention and lacing are both good enough. I like the aroma a lot, the brew smells like coffee, dark chocolate, burnt/charred malt, oak and some bourbon. The taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also some caramel, vanilla and earthy flavors noticeable too. I think the coffee/roasty flavors stand out to me, but they don't overpower the other flavors either. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's coating and smooth with a moderate amount of carbonation. I thought this was pretty tasty, wish the barrel had more of a kick here though but with the age that's my fault for waiting to drink it. Can't go wrong with any of the Péché Mortel brews, certainly worth picking up if you come across some!

Copenhagen 27/3 2024. 34,1 cl bottle from Kihoskh, Sønder Boulevard, Kbh. V. Dark red label with a drawing of some kind of bird devouring all sorts of things.

Pours opaque dark brown with a mid-sized beige head. Stable. Settles as thin but unbroken layer of foam just covering the surface of the beer.Substantial lacing.

Aroma is intense with a light sweet and malty odor soon overpowered by distinct earthy fumes and a scent of dark alcohol. Toffee caramel and bread. Tobacco, leather and wood. Bourbon.

Light carbonation. Medium thick, oily, soft, greasy, lightly tingling texture.

Flavor is intense with a medium strong sweetness followed and balanced by a slightly stronger boozy bitterness. Aftertaste is bitter with a prominent sweet and alcohol-laden sweet undertone. Lingering. Finish is dry like a shot of Bourbon.

Powerful rich and earthy Barrel Boozer.

12oz bottle in a snifter. Dated 8/12/21, so just over three years at time of consumption.

A: A very aggressive pour only managed to raise a short-lived and thin brown head. Deep black color. Only some pencil thin, broken lines of lacing.

S: Very barrel forward nose. Corny bourbon, char, big whiffs of oak. Quick hint of coconut and lots of vanilla. Huge malty backbone of fudge and brownies with a little nuttiness. Dark chocolate and woody roast. Coffee buried within. Hints of black cherry and dark fruit.

T: Follows the nose. Barrel is all over this one from start to finish. Bourbon on the attack. Lots of woody oak. Vanilla and caramel chews. A very small amount of heat. Deeply fidget, chocolate sauce. Lots of woody roast and some smoke. Dark chocolate, subtle hints of coffee, and dark fruit in the background. Papery oxidation. Chocolate, oak, and stuff bourbon on the finish.

M: Thick body, round and chewy in a big way. Not at all sticky or sludge, though. Lightly prickling carbonation, but it feels undercarbed. Warming bourbon.

O: This one did not hold up as well as I'd like. It was starting to go flat and oxidized, and the coffee has faded. Dusty oak, oxidation, and bourbon great are all coming out more than I'd like. I can picture it being a very good beer in its prime, but I don't think this bottle was packaged right enough to age gracefully.

11/16/24 (Hopleaf - Chicago, IL): $10 plus tax 5 ounce draft pour in a bell glass.

Appearance: Pitch black base, negligible head settles quickly. Nice. 4.25

Aroma: Let sit for 20 minutes to warm to proper temperature. Strong dark roast coffee, bitter and bold, nice smooth bourbon back. Solid blend, base comes through stronger than the standard. 4.25

Taste: Dark roast coffee again, earthy, strong, wonderful leads. Bourbon, sharp, strong, smooth but potent. Base dark chocolate, decadent hot fudge. Really nice blend here, bourbon blends very well. 4.5

Mouthfeel: Creamy medium body, negligible carbonation. Stronger then the ABV, perhaps the bourbon adds perceceived strength. Nice coffee bitterness, dry, though base sweetness fights a good fight. Chocolate fudge finish. 4.75

Overall: This is a great pour, bold aroma and flavors, bourbon really blends well with the base and coffee. This is how old school coffee bourbon stouts were presented back in the day. So glad I stopped in for this one. 4.75
