Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Péché Mortel is an intensely black and dense stout in which coffee is infused during the brewing process. The result is a strong beer where prominent roasted flavours coalesce with a powerful taste of coffee. Once fermentation is complete, the beer is aged several months in bourbon oak barrels, which imparts some vanilla and woody aromas as well as bourbon flavours.

2013 vintage - a 341ml bottle with a bottled-on date of Nov 2013. Purchased ages ago from the Brewdog webshop. Described on the label as an extra-strong stout brewed with coffee and aged 12 months in bourbon barrels.

A: Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottle conditioned. A very dark reddish-brown hue that appears ultra black in the glass. Yields a smallish head of creamy brown foam that lasts for a minute or two before subsiding to a patchy surface layer. Some lacing.

S: Aroma of rich roasted malt with hints of coffee, bitter chocolate, burnt grain, subtle molasses, vanilla, dried fruit, wood, a touch of bourbon, leather and ale yeast. Intense yet balanced - simply superb.

T: Tastes of powerful roasted malt with notes of coffee, burnt grain, bitter chocolate, molasses, dried fruit, wood, vanilla, bourbon and ale yeast. The booze is very well hidden. Quite sweet, followed by a robust malt-driven bitterness upon swallowing.

M: Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with soft carbonation and an amazing velvety body. Rich and unctuous. Pretty astringent; dries the palate. Aftertaste of rich roasted malt, intense coffee, bitter chocolate, molasses, dried fruit, wood, vanilla, bourbon notes and yeast.

O: Sublime - a simply fantastic melding of aroma and flavour. Looks great, while the aroma and flavour are rich, intense and smooth. Amazing balance for the style. Superb body - thick and creamy. A incredible brew to round out a session with; this seems only to have improved with age. An amazing beer and an absolute must-try.

I want to qualify that I am rating the 2018 version here. I also had the 2017 yesterday, but the bourbon is too strong in that one and, while not as bad as anything Nickelbrook lays its hands on, it still a fail, maybe a 3.25 to 3.50.
The 2018 however (at least without the aging), is a masterpiece. It so well balanced that you are hard pressed to think of making it better. Smooth, full bodied, yet not heavy - it is a pleasure to sup. Sadly, not available in Ontario, because colonialism is still alive in these parts.

Appearance - This beer pours out black as night with 2 fingers of beautiful mocha head The head does slowly fade and it is so dark that visible carbonation is almost nil.

Aroma - The oak and vanilla dominate here, it is a very sweet vanilla at that, is expresso, dark chocolate but wow that whisky stands above the rest.

Taste - This is on another level man, Oak is the first taste present on the tongue followed by an extremely sweet vanilla, then you are hit with expresso, and dark chocolate. They don't add a whole bunch of extra flavors but they dont need too. this is perfect. I'm ready to give it a 5.

Feel - A definite theme in this box, the feel again is thick heavy bodied and creamy, this may be the creamiest yet. It goes down ridiculously smooth with only the slightest hint of bitterness from the coffee and oak.

Overall - Its funny because this feels like the shortest review I've written on a beer from this box but it really is by far the best. This is something special and I understand why people hunt for it every year. Wow. I'm honestly lost for words.

On draft at Church Key in D.C. for Peche Mortel Day 2018. Served in a snifter glass. Pours a dark black body, creamy one finger white head, good retention and bits of lacing. Smell is espresso, bitter cocoa, smoke, whiskey heat, touch of oak and a fair bit of dark chocolate. Flavour is fairly bitter and even a touch smoky, touch of vanillin and fair bit of coffee, touch of milk chocolate. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, lighter than expected, good carbonation and a slightly harsh whiskey and bitter coffee finish. It's good, and I'm glad to have finally ticked this after almost a decade in beer.

Look: Cola black with ruby highlights and a khaki head.

Smell: A pretty acrid burnt rubber or band aid on the attack. Then the dark chocolate and coffee show through a little bit more. Hard to get past that burnt rubber.

Taste: Sharp boozy bourbon, dark chocolate, leather, oak, vanilla, and dates.

Feel: Medium plus body. Medium bitterness. Medium booze. Smooth over all.

Overall: Not much of an improvement over the base. I just can’t get past that nose. I’d rather have to original.
