12oz glass at the Underground. More exotically flavoured saison - this time with Sancho peppercorns and yuzu rinds.

This beer appears a rather hazy medium golden straw colour, with one finger of loosely foamy, sudsy dirty white head, which wafts away quite readily, leaving a rocky lowland of craggy lace around the glass as it quickly abates.

It smells of spicy black pepper, gritty, grainy pale malt, somewhat tart generic citrus, a middling yeastiness, and some soft leafy herbal notes. The taste is semi-sweet grainy malt, ethereal white and black pepper, fairly dry citrus rind, subtle earthy yeast, a touch of powdered ginger, and faintly alcohol-steeped leafiness.

The bubbles are a tad prickly, but generally laid back, the body an adequate medium-light weight, and actually pretty smooth. It finishes off-dry, the wheaty grain well tempered by the fading pepper and now musty fruitiness.

An interesting experiment - take a base saison, with its own merits, and add some worldly guest ingredients, ones which enhance already existent flavours, while tweaking them at the same time. A job well done.

On tap at Volo for the DDC tap takeover, into a tulip. A saison brewed with Japanese sansho pepper and yuzu rinds.

Poured a pale golden yellow, with a white head. Solid film is retained, and leaves some spotty lace behind. Nose has some interesting pepper notes (I'll guess that this is the sansho?); quite nice spiciness. Some ginger notes comes through too. Some wheat, and orange rinds/zest. Lightly stings the nose, but in a nice way. Taste is dry, yeasty with the peppery and ginger notes of the nose remaining prominent. Some citrus rind still. Mildly less inviting than the nose was, but still very tasty. Drying and yeasty finish, medium full body with a high carbonation. Great flavour profile and certainly unique. Another winner tonight from DDC.

Draft

Appearance - Slightly hazy yellow colour with an average size fizzy white coloured head. There is a low amount of carbonation showing and there is some good lacing. The head lasted for around 5 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Hops, bread/grains, cloves/pepper

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, bread/grains/yeast, and a mix of spices.. coriander/pepper/cloves. The spiciness of this beer really kicks in during the aftertaste. A second or two after each sip was done I could really taste the floral peppery spices coming back.

Overall - The aftertaste is what really sets this beer apart from other saisons I've tried. I guess it has something to do with the asian spices they used to brew it. It's definitely a beer to try when you visit their brew pub.

Draft: Poured a hazy beige color ale with a nice foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of pepper with nice floral rustic malt with light sweet floral undertones. Taste is also a very nice combination between some floral rustic malt with notes of peppercorn and a dry attenuated finish. Body is quite full with good carbonation. Very well brewed with character and good drinkability factor.

On tap at Mondiale 2011. Their 12th anniversary beer, brewed with peppercorn and yuzu rinds. Spicy and peppery but not as sweet and spicy interesting as I was prepped to believe. Higher than average mouthfeel Very lacey, hops bring it to the finish. Ok drinkability.
