As the trend in hoppy beer is fruitier and fruitier, its no surprise that breweries are accenting the implied citrus impressions with actual citrus additions. Dieu Du Ciel's Disco Soleil brightens its taste with kumquat for a juicy and vibrant session.

As it would have it, a bright orange and gold austere gleams through its unadulterated haze. With the nose grazing the rim, the senses are taken back by the plethora of ripe citrus and floral orange blossom. Tangerine and nectarine seem tree-ripe as the first sip hits the palate like sweet and fruity sherbet.

After the taste settles, the middle palate unfolds with a mild honey, short caramel and sugary fructose taste to provide the underpinnings for a fast development of hops. What's juicy, vibrant and ripe quickly turns to dried citrus peel, grassy herbs and lemon verbena, and then a partly-spicy, partly-resinous bitterness in a peculiar fresh shaven pine fashion.

With its density of fruit and creamy malts, the beer's upstart is medium-bodied. Though it develops quickly into a creamy-dry finish without fatigue or weight, the ale retains its mild fruity sugars and starchy substrate until late- allowing for the taste of cream sickle to permeate in finish and aftertaste.

I'm usually impressed by DDC but this one was not one of their best. It was pretty astringent in my opinion with very little kumquat citrus flavor. I don't know how old my bottle was, but I feel like it was definitely overpriced for this brew.

Hazy gold color. Small white head. No lacing.
Sweet fruit aroma. Floral hops.
Orange taste up front, hops at the end.
Light and refreshing, a little too sweet for me.

Funky taste. Reminds me of late nights in Scotland. Very very subtle orange flavour. More bitter than orange.

341ml bottle - having a little tropical IPA fun now, are we, DDC?

This beer pours a hazy, bright medium golden yellow colour, with a teeming tower of puffy, frothy, and densely foamy eggshell white head, which leaves some chunky snow rime lace around the glass as it slowly sinks away.

It smells of rather dank piney and leafy hops straight off, musty, fleshy tropical fruit that I'm going to attribute to kumquats (never having knowingly had them myself), bready, grainy pale malt, a bit of dry chalkiness, and further floral, earthy hops. The taste is more fruity at first - generic citrus, muddled kumquat (like I now know what I'm talking about), guava, and peach - some lessened pine, in both intensity and in dankness, a pale malt that seems to have taken on a certain caramelized sweetness, and more late-arriving earthy, slightly perfumed floral hops.

The carbonation is decently sprightly in its moderate bearing, the body a proper medium weight, equal parts malt and fruit, and altogether smooth. It finishes off-dry, the guest fruitiness countering the various lingering hop bitters to a pleasant detente.

An enjoyable IPA, overall, the kumquat sort of blending into the general fruitiness for the most part. Balanced, tasty, and worthy of at least a few rounds on yer favourite summer patio - disco ball optional, of course.

On tap at the Farmhouse. Hazy orange body. Smell is fruity, citrusy, and tropical. Some sugary aromas too. Taste has a lot of kumquat. Sweet and citrusy. Pale malt sweetness. Then some bitterness in the finish. Creamy mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Really nice.

Purchased at Dapanneur AS in Montreal for $3.00 for a 341ml bottle. Served at 6deg C in a draught glass

A- Opens well and pours a tiny 1/4 inch head that is gone within a minute or two. Light to medium golden colour and filtered clear

S- Not a lot here. Some citrus and sweetness with malt

T- Nice interesting flavor. Some fruit and sweetness. Not a lot of cumquat though. It is there but subdued. Good balance and smooth brew. Touch sour at the very end

M- Dry and tart

O- Nice break beer. Will not buy again but it was an interesting sip.

Food Pairing

This nice little brew went well with..... Homemade nachos! Ground beef, cheese, salsa, sour cream, onions, citrus and some garlic.

Enjoy
