Style: English Barleywine

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 14.40%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Aged in the third-use barrels that were once home to Kentucky bourbon and then our renowned Bourbon County Stout, this traditional English-style barleywine possesses the subtlety of flavor that only comes from a barrel that’s gone through many seasons of ritual care. The intricacies of the previous barrel denizens – oak, charcoal, hints of tobacco and vanilla, and that signature bourbon heat – are all present in this beer. Hearty and complex, Bourbon County Brand Barleywine is a titan and a timeline; a bold, flavorful journey through the craft of barrel aging.

Reviewed from (long-standing) notes. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Tampa Bay Brewing Company snifter. 2013 vintage bottle, though I didn't make note of a specific review date.

A: A muddy and murky brown, with a thin tan head. A good amount of visible carbonation for style.

S: Bourbon, and oak with a huge vanilla presence. Chocolate and sweet sticky malts. Some toffee and a bit of caramel.

T: Bourbon, with some woody char, huge toffee, and more vanilla-forward oak. Sweetness from the malts primarily, plus some from the ethanol. Milder notes of caramel, chocolate, and dark sticky fruit. Finishes with lingering sweet toffee and some alcohol heat.

M: Medium body for style, and low carbonation overall but as expected. The alcohol is quite obvious but this doesn't seem overly hot.

O: A really, really good barleywine. Very well done.

For this round we cracked open the 2017, 14.4%ABV release.

The pour is a deep crimson color, with a bubbly ivory head and minimal lace around the glass.

Predominantly sweet nose, slightly tart. Lots of dark fruit. Caramel and toffee fight through, but for the most part it’s pretty sweet so far.

More dark fruit, oak on the nose. Booze makes its appearance throughout.
Good balance. A little too sweet. Very good.

Great body. Medium carb. Slightly sticky, but undoubtedly a very solid Barleywine.

2016

Pours dark brown, little to no head. Thin collar left

Whiskey and coconut smell. Maybe a bit of chocolate and oaky vanilla.

Taste up front is vanilla and some booze. Quite a bit of bitterness. Sweet brown sugar and caramel take over the bitterness as it warms some.

A bit syrupy, lingering boozy heat.

A big barleywine that holds and hides the high ABV well. Somewhat sweet with some vanilla from the barrel.

2017 vintage poured into. Highball glass (best available).

Pour: beautiful amber and rose color. Small head but pour was small and not aggressive. Minimal lacing.

Nose: dark brandied fruits, brown sugar, toffee, bready malt. Lots going on and really nice. Poured into a snifter would have been even better.

Taste: sweet, dark fruit, some bourbon, oak, smooth malts. Hints of toffee, brown sugar. Really complex but the sweet dark fruits dominate. Slight alcohol burn. Hops are present but not bitter.

Mouthfeel: greT viscousity, oily, rich. Light carbonation. Wonderful.

Overall: this is great beer. Get any you can. Great complexity and easy drinking despite the big ABV.

On-tap at Kickbacks Gastropub in Jax. Obviously been waiting years to try this and figured I’d never get my hands on an (overpriced) bottle so why not try it from a keg.

Beautiful burnt sienna/dark amber color. Naturally lots of bourbon and barrel in the nose and flavor. Heavy on the sweet booze and caramelized malt. I even get super dark chocolate and espresso roast coffee. A sugary dessert, really. Fantastic EBW qualities which have clearly been enhanced by the BA. Probably the last GI beer I’ll ever have, sadly, unless I see Rare or another version of Bourbon County around. It’s been real!
