Style: English Barleywine

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 14.40%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Aged in the third-use barrels that were once home to Kentucky bourbon and then our renowned Bourbon County Stout, this traditional English-style barleywine possesses the subtlety of flavor that only comes from a barrel that’s gone through many seasons of ritual care. The intricacies of the previous barrel denizens – oak, charcoal, hints of tobacco and vanilla, and that signature bourbon heat – are all present in this beer. Hearty and complex, Bourbon County Brand Barleywine is a titan and a timeline; a bold, flavorful journey through the craft of barrel aging.

On-tap at Kickbacks Gastropub in Jax. Obviously been waiting years to try this and figured I’d never get my hands on an (overpriced) bottle so why not try it from a keg.

Beautiful burnt sienna/dark amber color. Naturally lots of bourbon and barrel in the nose and flavor. Heavy on the sweet booze and caramelized malt. I even get super dark chocolate and espresso roast coffee. A sugary dessert, really. Fantastic EBW qualities which have clearly been enhanced by the BA. Probably the last GI beer I’ll ever have, sadly, unless I see Rare or another version of Bourbon County around. It’s been real!

2017

Look - This is a beautiful dark red with orange highlights. It reminds me of mahogany. It had a thin, light and wispy head to it.

Smell - The smell has tons of caramel and rich boozy notes. There's a thick layer of vanilla in there mixed with dark fruits, like plum and fig, maybe even a little cranberry.

Taste - This is full of flavor. There's a lot of caramel, baked apple, vanilla and raisin all laid out on a grainy layer of barley notes. This is super rich and complex, with the rich caramel notes intertwining with the dark fruit notes in every sip. It also has a nice and strong boozy accent to liven everything up.

Feel - This stuff is super viscous and chewy. It's a nice, thick barleywine that has a syrupy quality to it that makes your mouth and lips sticky and delicious.

Overall - I love this beer. It's one of my favorite releases from last year. The booze is very prevalent along with the candied fruits and caramel and the barley undertone. It's everything I love about barleywines plus all the goodness imparted by the barrel aging.

Pairs Well With - Good friends and good whiskey!

loll was stupid enough to buy a couple 2015 bottles without googling it... should i really have to google a beer to check infection every time i get a bourbon county? anyway - now i know what turned and infected beer tastes like. super thin and fizzy - caramel and vanilla flavors are replaced by cherry spritzer type notes. sour in the most weird and unfortunate way. will update my review when i finally get to taste a good bottle of this one.

Great beer, filled with Vanilla and Toffee and some bourbon and a sweetness that's not overpowering at all. Dictionary definition of a warm winter beer. Perfect for sipping when it pours outside

2015 version . May have been recalled and refunded, memory fails me. Taste is going to vinegar since last year.
Trippy beer. Each time I drink it.

2017 vintage :
5 oz sample in a Styrofoam cup (you read dat right) poured a fairly still dark orangey brown, very little tannish orange foam initially yet has an oddly consistent "spaghetti staind" looking orangish1/8" ring that seems to also creep UP about 1/8" the cup !!! It lasts most the way down, idk if cuz its foam but really fuckin cool visually. Left an orangish stain on the walls too
Smell is mostly alcoholy bourbon mixed with dates, coconut, tobacco and some undiscernable spice
Starts off hot and sweet, sticky caramel and port, a dried plum and licorice like coating soon take over my tongue, almost like an unsalted hoisin sauce, finish still has that spice, clove ? Nutmeg ? Allspice (tamarind) ? IDK ?
Body is typical, mild co2, slick, cloying yet enjoyable stickyness
Overall a fantastic brew, 1yr of age would make this beer 10X better
