Fall 2015 vintage; drank 11/25/15 @ Sheffield's...before the release day, and drank on draft, so no infection concerns.

Black appearance.

Almost no tan head; almost no lace.

Mild pepper heat, honeyed nuts & cream notes in the nose.

Medium thick, sticky mouthfeel.

Toasted pecan, sweet candied sugar & faint pepper heat flavors.

A touch too sweet, which the pepper heat somewhat balanced. Very unique & tasty.

Aged bottle shared with me on thanksgiving. Yup, it is infected. Too bad because I thought the foretaste of bourbon and pecans was warm and roasted, but then goes sour and spicy quickly. Not good! Smells like toilet bowl cleaner on the finish.

Tasted from bottle. Pours black with basically no head. Pretty sweet aroma with just a hint of infected sour notes. Maple and bourbon notes. Surprisingly not that much sour funk. Being refrigerated likely helped. Flavors of sweet maple, brown sugar, some hints of nuts, cocoa, bourbon. Finishes with a very faint note of peppers and slight but not excessive sourness. Definitely drinkable and actually pretty good. Uninfected would likely be incredible.

I'm conflicted on how to rate Prop 15. Obviously, per style, it's a tremendously infected, bad beer! But even so... it's practically a wine. When I cracked the bottle, the sour nose was evident from as far as five feet away. I couldn't believe how obvious it was - it had a very type sour grape smell.

Ordinarily I'd have stopped there... but a friend gave himself a small pour and tried it. He didn't die. Projectile vomiting did not ensue. So I waited a moment and tried it myself. Strangest thing - every other infected beer I've had has been execrably bad. But... Prop 15 tastes just like wine at this point. Per my tasting friends, the fruity, dark notes reminded them a lot of a cabernet. I'm not wino enough to chime in, but yes - it tastes just like wine... and not a bad one.

So, my rating does not reflect the intended style, but the actual experience with the beer as it is. I like it. I'd buy a bottle. I'm kind of impressed.

A- pours a deep black color with no head or lacing

S- smells of of soured yogurt, berries, spicy pepper, rye barrel, curdled milk

T- tastes of tangy Greek yogurt, maple, pepper, lacto, finishes with dairy sour flavor

M- medium body and carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel and finish

O- infected beyond completion, drain pour

From the infected batch.

The taste is sour with a lingering touch of mildly off-putting apple cider and vinegar flavor, though the base components of the stout are still there. The beer is grossly over carbonated .

Overall, I would not want more than a sip of this beer, but it is not entirely awful. It might actually taste better than some of the regularly available stouts and sours that are being sold on the market today.

Mine was infected. I like sours and wilds, and would have been quite happy with this...if it were what they were trying to do. The sour was moderate, very green apple in taste

Special 2015 goose island bottle from Darrel. Black, oily pour, extremely small head. Something wrong here, smells like a cleaning product. Taste also sharp, biting, astringent, mildly fruity, but really undrinkable. definitely infected.

If you told me this was a sour cherry stout I would have enjoyed it even though it's not my favorite style. However, this is supposed to be an adjunct heavy stout.

Classic dark cola body with some milkyness towards the end of the pour, thin dark brown head fades entirely. Nose is sweet, to say the least. There is some roasted malt and dark chocolate, dark red cherry juice, bourbon sweetness and alcohol warmth, faint vanilla, very faint chili smokiness that would have been missed if I weren't looking for it. Over the top, but not in the rich warm boozy way like normal- far too sweet and fruity. The flavor gets bad, predominantly displaying cherry juice, with mild chocolate flavor. Which sounds like a great combination, but not when it's this sweet, and in a beer, and in this beer particularly. Coming to the rescue at the end is some smoke, alcohol warmth, and mild chili heat. Body is thin, sticky, a bit astringent, with appropriately diminished carbonation.
Something went wrong here. I'm not shitting all over it for any reason besides that it stunk. Way too sweet, too many off flavors, and too few and weak of the appropriate ones. Disappointing, to say the least. Now I understand why I was offered to buy a case a year after its release, and glad I only bought 2.

Swirling the liquid around the glass and it's not sticking. Smelling some cherries, chocolate and oak. This tangy Cherry Bourbon variant is not half bad. Oh, you say it's not supposed to taste like this? Yeah, getting absolutely no Pecan or Guajillo pepper flavor. Classic bcbs sweetness with subtle maple earthiness. Alas, tis a disappointment. Oh well, sending in for that refund.

Simply put, this cannot be what GI intended. I've had two bottles now, and both tasted pretty much the same. There's something to be said for the consistency I suppose. But, this beer was over the top sweet. Could have been the maple I suppose but there was no barrel character at all. No pecan, no pepper. This beer was nothing it was advertised to be. That said, I shared my 2nd bottle with a buddy and he actually enjoyed it. The sweetness wasn't too much for him, and he wasn't bothered by the complete lack of advertised flavors. I'm reading some recent reviews of this beer and it appears that others felt the same way he did. Having had two bottles, I am positive that this beer is "off". I simply cannot imagine GI letting it leave and wanting it to be the way it currently is. I know they are looking into the off flavor claims, but it seems like the jury is already back with an infection decision.

This review is based on an infected bottle. It is based on how it is rather than what I expected of it.

Pours a thick black with negligible head. The smell is all sweet cola. The taste is very tart cherry. It reminds me a lot of Boulevard's Imperial Stout: Tart Cherry.

The taste is very tart with the base stout coming through very mildly. It is hard to taste any of the additional flavors expected of a Prop. For what it was supposed to be, it disappoints greatly. However, on its own, it's not a terrible flavor. For anyone who likes Tart of Darkness or other sour stouts, it's actually quite good. The feel is thick like the other BCBS variants.

Overall, I'm disappointed because it's not what I was expecting. I hope the person I got this from was ignorant of his infected batch, but I suspect that he knew and was trying to quickly offload these :(

Nope. The 3rd infected beer I've had. 2015 was a huge flop for gi. I've never been more disappointed in my life. Sour yogurt is dominant. Nothing else. Yuck.

Appearance: Arrives dark as night with a very modest head that fails to last; no lacing

Smell: Roasty, with maple syrup, chocolate and molasses

Taste: Roasty, with chocolate and maple syrup, up front, and pecan tones developing in the middle; after the swallow, the impact of the Bourbon barrel becomes clear, with vanilla tones, as well; it takes a few sips, but the pepper adds a tinge of heat to the aftertaste

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with low carbonation

Overall: Incredibly smooth, and the touch of heat makes this somewhat different

No sign of infection. Smell is good but doesn't really showcase any of the adjuncts. The flavor on the other hand is extremely sweet with lots of maple syrup flavor. The pecans aren't more subdued but provide more of a pecan pie type accent to the flavor which goes well. The guajillo's are barely present and provide a bit of burn at the back of the throat initially but very little flavor. It would've been much better to have more pepper flavor and heat to balance the sweetness. It was also definitely better before it warmed all the way up to room temperature.

I enjoyed it and was glad to get to try it but it certainly wasn't worth what I gave up for it.

This starts with a huge pecan onset before settling into the maple syrup. Underlying caramel and chocolate malts with a touch of toffee. Ends with a cherry juice or chery cordial that seemed out of place.

Wow what a beer! Had on tap. Complex and balanced. Nose dominately maple and pecans. Peppers come thru on the palate first, followed by the nutty pecans with sweetness. Slight bourbon enough to know it is there. Amazing!

Review of a non-infected bottle. I tasted another bottle with an undesirable yogurt-like flavor and aroma, but this one blew me away so much that I felt inclined to give GI credit for the beer at its best. Served at cellar temp in a Rare Day snifter.

L - deep black/brown with very little head, appears almost still with an oily film on top
S - marshmallow, caramelized sugar, vanilla, bourbon, something vaguely vegetal (sweet potato?), alcohol
T - buttery, creme brûlée, sugary syrup that is not distinctly maple, a tinge of earthy pepper on the finish
F - buttery applies here as well, extremely sweet with a nice mild heat thanks to the guajillo, balancing things out for a rich but not too overwhelming experience
O - with the exception of barleywine and one particular year of coffee (2013), the bcbs variants never deliver like the original, in my opinion. Prop always makes me think twice, and is a special treat without fail. The chili really shines through as it warms, and was well suited for this brew - not too spicy but providing a counterbalance to the sweetness and a flavor that is outside of the box compared to the popular "Mexican hot chocolate" style stout

Pours an opaque dark brown like oil with similar viscosity and khaki colored head. Bourbon, sweet maple, chocolate, and nuts (pecans) on the nose; follows onto the palate. Full bodied. Finishes with bourbon, sweet maple notes, some cocoa, and the peppers give a light lingering tingle.

Bottle pour; Looked and smelled like expected, minimal carbonation. The flavor was a total failure -- faint tart cherry note with oily, slick overpowering sweetness that tasted like maple sugar water. Highly unpleasant, and the bottle was not finished, even amongst the share group.

500 ml bottle into a snifter.

Pours a dark brown, near black, opaque, with no head and no lacing. Smells pretty awesome- malt, maple, bourbon, dates, raisins, a nutty aroma, some peppers. Taste follows the nose with the malt, bourbon and maple. Also caramel, raisins, pecans, light chocolate, no peppers. It's sweet, but not overly so. Damn good. Very smooth for the ABV, an incredible and full body, taste lingers.

First off, I never criticize others reviews, but you folks that give this like, a 1.00, please stop using this site. Thanks.

Well blended, the mixing of the bourbon barrels and the maple is impressive. Had this at FOBAB. and thought it was much sweeter there. Much less so in the bottle. While the pecans come through quite clearly, the peppers do not, at least in the taste. This is a great beer. Glad I had this bottle, and twice as glad I have another.

My beer wasn't infected it just isn't very good.
Look - Not much carb. Looks like regular bc
Smell - maple and pecans
Taste - Maple over powers everything and makes it just way way too sweet. Chillies are suppose to be there to counter that sweetness but are barely noticeable and I'm very sensitive to any spicyness.
Feel - medium feel
Overall - sorry Chicago fan boys, get em next year

Lucky to have this bottle with no infection. Sweet pecan notes make it go down nice, smooth and easy. Smell was potent and sweet as well. Glad I got to try it.
