Shamrock StoutShamrock Stout
Notes: Bourbon barrel aged stout infused with white chocolate, vanilla bean, lactose milk sugar, and mint. White chocolate and mint provide the base for this beer’s sweet dessert-like aroma, while the lactose provides body to complement a dry, alcohol warming finish. A small portion of vanilla beans are added to enhance the flavor without additional sweetness.

I received a crowler from @fbarber in the NBS BIF #14. The crowler was filled on 9/23/2021. Poured into a snifter at 59°. It pours a very dark walnut - nearly black. The medium-mocha-colored head fizzled away almost immediately. The nose offers roasted malt, dark chocolate, caramel, brown sugar, oak, tobacco, and soft but noticeable bourbon. This is delightful! I understand that the base Stout is BCBS and it has all of its best qualities but it's even more flavorful. It bursts with fudge, roasted malt, vanilla, and nutty char. The barrel notes are strong but do not overpower or distract. It is very sweet but fairly mellow for such a big Stout. The mouth feel is luxuriously thick and creamy - almost chewy - with lite/moderate carbonation, and it's surprisingly drinkable for 14.6% ABV. In fact, it's the sweetness more than the elevated alcohol level that calls for deliberate drinking. It's a perfect dessert sipper (or in my case an rainy afternoon sipper). Overall, Shamrock Stout is exquisite. I'm grateful for the chance to try it.

This one pours pitch black, thick and viscous. Velvety 2 or 3 finger mocha colored head forms on the beer, then slowly but steadily dissipates leaving, eventually, no residual head. I am actually impressed that this has as good of a head as it does given that it is coming out of a crowler.

Aroma is absolutely lovely - notes of oak, musty wet wood, vanilla, mint, roasted malts, chocolate, and some bourbon. Its all there, but avoids becoming too sweet or overshadowing the barrel.

Taste follows the nose with notes of roasted malts, oak, wet musty wood, cocoa, milk chocolate. Then as that crosses the palate they are joined by notes of vanilla cream and mint before the bourbon shows up on the finish. The mint is very subtle providing a nice added dimension to the flavor profile.

Feel is thick, viscous and creamy. Moderate carbonation. Slight warmth present on the back end.

Overall this is a fantastic beer from GI. The additions are delicious and well balanced while still allowing the base BCBS to come through. A must try if you get the chance.

Looks like Bcbs, but the mint addition makes this beer stand out. Super good, draft at Fulton. Mint very light on nose. Really pops with the lactose in taste.

Truly an amazing brew - the best I’ve had from Goose Island. Similar base to the regular but also had peppermint in it as well. Very rare - only brewed once a year!

This one pours a very dark black color, with a very small head, and basically no lacing.

I expected this to be a mint bomb/disaster, but it actually wasn't. It's a sweet candied mint thing, almost like mint pistachio ice cream, with vanilla, chocolate fudge, sweet caramelly bourbon, and charred oak.

I guess this is basically mint BCBS, and it works super well. The mint is light and sweet, without getting into that medicinal toothpaste sort of garbage mint in beer usually evokes. It melds well with the sweet white chocolate and vanilla bean. Obviously the base stout is quite nice, providing the usual fudgy dark chocolate and bittersweet caramel. It's not very boozy, as the barrel is just warming and sweet.

This is thick and chewy, and pretty silky, with a good level of drinkability.

This worked significantly better than I thought it would.
