Notes: For the first year since the brewery started doing the Reserve variant, Goose Island is releasing a second Reserve in the same year. For this variant, the beer spent time in Rittenhouse Rye barrels giving the beer a spicier taste that you would expect from a rye whiskey.

Had on tap. Midnight black oily body with a brown foam ring. Big wood and rye, with cocoa, black strap molasses, tobacco, slight brown sugar and bourbon booze backing it all up. Let it warm up, rye spice hits hard, wood and booze follow, dark fruit, charcoal, tobacco, cocoa, and burnt caramel supporting. Not as clean as rye variants in the past, hot booze stands out. Feel is hot, smooth but rye and wood laden, sticky and viscous. This is the one I would age, besides regular, so far for this year’s release.

Pours midnight black with a thin tan cap that falls away quickly. Nice leggings when swirled. Aroma is dark roasted malt, rye, and dark chocolate. Flavor follows the nose, with dark stone fruit added. Sweet but not cloyingly so. Feel is thick and syrupy, with minimal carbonation. Overall a fantastic beer.

On tap. Tan head. Black color.

Big fudgy and chocolate profile. Spicy rye. Whiskey and vanilla flavors. The difference between this and 2019 Bcs is more barrel flavors, more spice, and less fudge. Another fun offering.

Pours pitch black. Aroma is mainly rye & chocolate. Taste is more complex with rye, chocolate, oaky, roasty, coconut & vanilla. Usual BCBS feel. Outstanding stout.

This was aged in Rittenhouse rye barrels and you could tell right away that it had a more distinct smokiness to the taste than the other variants. The smell had spice and dark fruit in it and the taste was smokey and spicy. Maybe a little too much so for me.

Pours a dark black with a thin whispy fresh mocha head. Smell had rye, spice wood ,and chocolate. Taste was chocolate and rye forward vanilla and wood with spice and some bitter spice finish.. Mouth sweet and spicy very rye forward as it warms, the whiskey (rye) and spice lend to a bitterness in the end that i enjoyed. Very nice and was lowered priced than Orange and cheri variants but was harder to find.

500ml bottle, Drink By Sept 02, 2024 stamped on the reverse of the bottle, poured into a 2012 BCBS snifter glass.

The beer pours a jet black color, thick like motor oil with a thin khaki head that recedes into a ring of film lining the circumference of the glass while spots of lacing emerge. The aroma is great, spicy rye spirit, charred oak, toffee and tons of rich dark chocolate, light vanilla, toasted coconut and some stone fruits emerge as it warms. The flavors are exceptional, bursting with luscious chocolate, toasted coconut, charred oak, rich grains, lovely rye spirit, spicy, rich toffee and caramel, vanilla marshmallow and lingering stone fruits and warm alcohol. The mouthfeel is great, thick and viscous, coating and creamy and a massive body that still is effortlessly smooth and finish with a nice warm sensation.

Verdict: An incredible take on BCBS from Goose Island. It might be a spirit bias, but I love rye and I wish this would become the new base beer. It ticks all the boxes and just nails the rye spirit, tons of depth and dynamic flavors that stay true to what made BCBS great in the first place.

Pours a rich black color with a very thin mocha colored head on top. The smell of the beer has a subtle roast with some wood and spice. The taste of the beer has some burnt caramel and very subtle spice. The feel is smooth and incredibly smooth, no burn even as fresh as it is. Overall this is outstanding!
