A Belgian style pale ale blended with hibiscus and kombucha tea, Fleur is a beautiful, rose-colored ale with an aroma of strawberries and hibiscus flowers. Flavor balance starts with a hint of sweet, ripe berry and finishes tart.

from notes.on tap at uc catskeller.poured into a goblet,this beer is a light amber that has a decent head.smell is floral and herbal,taste is sweet malt followed by hop bitterness with a dry floral finish. mouthfeel is medium bodied with nice prickly carbonation.could have a few of these.an excellent summer beer.

I had this on tap at the Clybourn location. The beer was orange-amber wtih a white head. The aroma was of yeast and floral and perhaps somewhat citrusy note. The taste was yeasty and had a surprising sweet and sour quality. I never knew what a hibiscus might taste like, and this gave me a great chance. It definitely has the hibiscus taste! It's a great experience!

On Tap at the North End Market in Hudson.

Bright amber color. Thin but long lived head made of medium-sized, tightly packed but evervescent bubbles. Almost no lacing whatsoever.

The nose instantly told me this beer was going to offer a slight twist on the BPA. The expected Belgian yeast, floral aromas, a definite sweetness mingled were cut by tart cherries.

The taste struck a perfect balance between sweet and sour. Floral notes were maybe just a tad out of whack tending towards perfume but only ever so slightly. The purfume quality probably affected by drinkability score more than the taste score. As a single sipper, all the powerful tastes are interesting but it wears the mouth out. Still a great quencher with the low level sour tastes. If you know someone you might want to ease into sours this one introduces the taste in a non-sour brew.

Poured and amber color with creamy head that dwindled to sticky lace.

Floral element on the nose with a slight minerality. Very subtle nose.

The palate had nice hibiscus nuance with sweet malts on the backend. This wasn't a beer that screamed perfume - it was light and nicely balanced. The abv wasn't noticeable which made this brew very easy to drink.

It was a pleasurable quaff for a long evening...

cell phone notes

appearance: served in a snifter, clear bright amber body with obvious pink hues

smell: light tartness from the yeast, mild floral notes, light sweetness

taste: subtle in its delivery - wild yeast adds a nice tartness edge, very floral - like munching on edible flowers

mouthfeel: light and a good mix of sweet/sour

drinkability: good

On tap at Hopleaf.

A lightly hazy, coppery pour. Head was minimal. The nose did give off some floral notes, but I failed to see any serious notes from the belgian yeasts.

The taste is subdued. It drinks like a belgian wheat or something along that lines, as the flavor is so tame, and the body does not come rushing out to save it.

While I have enjoyed hibiscus in several other brews, this one just failed to make me turn the corner. An interesting brew, but not one i'll be in a hurry to revisit. Just a bit mild and tame for what it could be.

Enjoyed on tap at The Hunt Club. An interesting one, sourness derived from the herbs and wild yeast. Medium mouthfeel. Light brown, with some lace. Cloves, sourness, the whole thing didn't work today, it has many ideas, some of which I do not like here.

On-tap at the Catskeller, Cincinnati, OH - 7/30/09

A: Pours a hazy copper with an almost pinkish tint. Light lacing.

S: Light yeasty-phenolic aroma with mild floral notes.

T: Semi-sweet with a mild brett character. Balanced flavors with a floral, rose-like quality.

M: Medium-bodied and quite carbonated. A bit prickly with a lingering sweetness.

D: Somewhat unusual in its floral qualities, yet very nicely done. Super easy to drink and worth seeking out.

On tap at the Clybourn brewpub in Chicago. Pours a rich ruby red with fiery amber thrown in, along with a single finger of light orange head that leaves light lacings. Great retention.

Aroma is floral in the nose with distant herbal notes and a touch of sweet, citrusy hops. Not much else for the nose except for a touch of grassy hops and a distant note of apple. Very pleasant and refreshing in the nose.

Taste is of light malts with a fruity base, citrus and mild tropical tones. Floral character is throughout with a touch of strawberry as well. Finishes on a floral note with a touch of sourness and fruit tones after the fact. Very well put together.

Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with a semi dry texture and a mildly tart feel from the fruity character.

Drinkability is great. Very refreshing without ending up too sweet on the palate. Cheers!

Glowing sunset orange, an attractive color for sure. It had a generous froth, with a ring of spotty, irregular lace left behind. Malty nose, earthy and slightly sweet, with a light floral touch. Initial sip reminded me of juicyfruit gum, later it had a more subdued passion fruit or strawberry flavor from the yeast or hibiscus flowers. Residual bitterness, with some leafy botanicals, and fleeting sweetness in the aftertaste. Finished fairly dry, and was truly refreshing on a warm summer day.

Edit: A year-old bottle develops a nice complimentary tartness. Save some in the cellar for next spring/summer.

Had this at the Claybourn brewpub. Bartender told me this is a variation of Matilda and includes hibiscus. He gave me a sample of the Matilda. While similar, the Matilda had a lot more yeasty clove coming through.

3.5 A: Hazy amber orange color with bubbly white head. Average retention and some lacing.

4.0 S: Clove and yeastiness dominate.

4.5 T: Quite spicy. Cloves, pepper, yeastiness. Hops aren't apparent, but it is quite balanced. Malts take a back seat to the yeast products.

4.0 M: Medium body. Good spritzy carbonation.

4.5 D: This was really good. If I didn't have other stuff to try I would have loved another.

I had this on tap at the Clybourn brewpub, served in a large goblet. The beer is an orange shade of red with a slight haze, thin head. The aroma hints at Belgian ale yeast, some fruity esters and what I take for hibiscus based on the menu description. The hibiscus comes across a little like a honey beer in smell and taste, sweet and perfumy. Think Bière De Miel from DuPont, this is very similar. I'd definitely get it again.

I was lucky enough to try this on-tap at Goose Island's Fulton Street brewery (its good to know people).

A= This ale poured a mildly cloudy gold/amber color with a 1.5" snowy white head. The head took a good while to settle down into a thin cap and left big rings of sticky lace down my glass.

S= Aroma was dominated by some light malts, floral/noble hops, and a significant Belgian yeast note. Some hints at spicing too, but nothing over the top.

T= Like the aroma, the flavor was mostly made up of spicy hop bitterness and funky yeast. I think there was some wild yeast or brett added and it definitely produced a noticeable sour note, but that blended back into the malts and hops rather well. Finished dry with residual hop bitterness and a faint tartness battling to the end.

MF= The dryness made this ale feel on the lighter side of medium bodied. The carbonation was plentiful but still felt sodt on my tongue.

D= A very interesting ale here and definitely worth a try if you like Orval or GI's own Matilda. I would gladly drink a few in one sitting!

Pours a golden orange color with a small white head.

Scent of candi sugar, floral spices, earth and grain. A nice bit of complexity while keeping things in balance.

Taste of candi sugar, yeast, orange peel, and spices. Not bad, I could drink this on occasion, but it wouldn't be my first choice.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and smooth with low carbonation. I would prefer more of a bite from the carbonation with a lighter body with the style.

Served in a Matilda glass at Goose Island Clybourn 6/5/09. Thanks to HeatherAnn for the assist!

A: Served a slightly chill-hazed, glowing apricot color with a thick, one-finger, just off eggshell colored head. Retention was decent but not a lot of lace was left behind.

S: Reminded us of a less sweet Matilda with a very nice fresh hop aroma that blended well with smells of dried wildflowers and herbal/floral hops.

T: See above. Becomes more herbal and spicy as it warms.

M: Slightly sweet with a very nice dry/herbal/floral/spicy edge that we enjoyed.

D: Very refreshing and enjoyable. Please bottle this!

Also on-tap at the June BA Gathering. Served in a tulip glass.

A - Fantastic looking brew. One and a half fingers of egg-white foam with solid retention and glass-coating lacing. Hazed golden apricot-to-amber with a nice fiery glow to it.

S - Huge Belgian yeast, floral hops, light toffee malts, hibiscus - a little reminiscent of aged Houblon Chouffe. There's some clove and spice that comes out as the beer warms up.

T - Taste is more bitter and spicy, and becomes a touch unbalanced. Finishes with some of the floral and toffee notes, but somehow is less complex in character. No hint of alcohol, even with it being on the higher end of the Belgian pale ABV scale.

M - Thin, a little watery, soft in texture. Active carbonation that has a little bit of tingle but isn't over the top. A little underwhelming.

D - It's alright, but isn't one of my favorite styles. The spice and yeast get a bit fatiguing and a struggled to finish my glass (unlike the wonderful Saison where I kept going back for refills). Worth trying if it's around, but nothing special.
