Bourbon County Brand Birthday StoutBourbon County Brand Birthday Stout
Notes: Old Forester’s Birthday Bourbon is released each year on the birthday of founder George Garvin Brown. The bourbon is chosen from 11-year-old barrels and all of the bourbon is picked from one specific production day. In 2019 the bourbon was described as “rich oak spice and blackcurrant coupled with light maple, caramel cake, and white floral notes.”

Those are the barrels that housed Bourbon County Stout for a year and produce a variant with berry, maple, chocolate, and vanilla.

Pours black with a plum-red hue and a half-finger of short-lived, dark tan head. The head leaves a crown, but very little lacing.

Smooth bourbon stands out in the nose, with plum, raspberry and vanilla notes sitting on top of rich chocolate and a hint of leather.

Fruity elements carry over to the taste and stand out first: more berries and plum. There’s plenty of chocolate and caramel as well, and is fairly hot. Hints of vanilla, licorice and root beer make appearances, too. Lightly acerbic bitterness shows in the finish — like from coffee or a quality hot chocolate. Caramel and fruit linger in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is a bit of a let down. Oily and medium bodied at best, with fizzy carbonation. It’s not off-style, but isn’t as thick and luxurious as I was hoping.

There’s a ton of depth and excellent flavor to this one. The body and carbonation seem a little pedestrian by comparison and prevent this from being next-level, in my over-indulged opinion. Still excellent stuff.

500ml bottle, drink by August 4, 2025, poured into a 2012 Goose Island BCBS snifter glass.

The beer pours a very deep jet black color, thick and viscous with a firm finger of dark tan head that has good retention, modest lacing, and settles into a nice ring around the circumference of the glass. The aroma is quite intense, lots of barrel, really nice depth in terms of oakiness, char, smoke, toffee, bourbon spirit, a bit of spice with lots of rich chocolate and stone fruits. The flavors are wonderful, rich chocolate, delicate stone fruits, charred oak, chewy, musty and a bit funky, lots of roast and smoke, smooth bourbon spirit, lots of toffee and brown sugar, light vanilla, hearty grains and a lot of lingering char and musty oak. The mouthfeel is good, coating and so creamy, full bodied that is super luscious with a warm and lightly dry finish.

Verdict: An excellent take on Bourbon County that really highlights the Birthday Bourbon barrel character. It's rich, super flavorful and really takes on the unique dynamics of the barrels which makes for a very distinct BCBS experience. The main drawbacks here are the heavy oak and char that lingers and starts to dominate, especially at colder temperatures. That being said, a minor flaw that many might find as an asset to this beer.

Bottled 8/4/20; drank 12/20/20 @ Hannah & Kenser's.

Black appearance. An even pour yielded a small tan head; decent lace.

Oak, caramel, rich bourbon & faint chocolate notes in the nose.

Medium thick, creamy mouthfeel.

Oak, caramel & bourbon flavors up front; mild chocolate & faint citrus notes on the finish.

Robust & very wood-forward; it's a lot, but it's ultimately a winner.

Thick heavy Black beer with a brown head, which doesn’t last long. Has a great nose. Excellent to slowly sip as desert. Still a bit young, will only get better with age. I have 3 ,cellaring in my basement. Maybe I’ll drink one a year for the next 3 years ?
