Tropical Beer HugTropical Beer Hug
Notes: This double dry-hopped double IPA grabs you with a big tropical beer hug—bursting with hops, hops and more hops. Notes of mango, pineapple, peach, and citrus are followed up with dank pine notes. Like a bear hug... but from a beer.

Poured into a Nonic point.

Pours slightly hazed. A nice lighter color for a DIPA.

Aromas of very ripe, maybe overripe, pineapple. Caramel malts and booze are present as well. A touch of resin.

Caramel malts on the tip of the tongue, followed by pineapple, pear, and a touch of mango. Resin and herbs at the finish along with some booze.

Medium bodied, well carbonated and drying. Not crisp, of course, but pretty drinkable for a strong IPA.

A solid tasty brew.

12 oz can from a mixed 12 pack with a BB date of 18 September 2022 stamped on the bottom.

Appearance. Deep amber colored body with high clarity and a good white head.

Tropical fruit notes completely dominate the aroma while the flavor also brings some earthy hop notes. Moderate bitterness for the style despite a clear suggestion of sweetness in the aroma. High ABV is incompletely hidden in both smell and taste.

Drank from the 19.2 oz can. Smell is fruity and piney up front with sweetness in the back. Citrus. Mango. Pineapple. Berries? Taste is subdued with earth hops and balancing malt profile. Some peach and citrus. Some piney bitterness in the finish. I wouldn't call the flavor huge, but it is OK. Overall, this is surprisingly easy drinking for its ABV. Refreshing but strong.

Tropical Beer Hug pours a dark golden color, with a big, long lasting, lacing head. Aroma is filled with tropical fruit, and a hint of earth. Flavor is lots of earth, with a hint of tropical flavors. Good body and feel. Overall, big aggressive IPA, bitter and earthy.

From a 545 ml. can with a BB date of 30 Sep 22. Sampled June 16, 2022 (My birthday).

The appearance is a slight cloudy looking golden color underneath a moderate ivory head that fizzles down to a ring after a few moments. Lacing.

The aroma is nothing extraordinary but it emits sensations of guava and other tropical fruits. Also a bready malt base.

The mouthfeel is light-medium.

The flavor is kicked off with the grainy, bready sweetness followed quickly by the tropical fruit bitterness to cap it off. A semi-dry and semi-crisp finish. Balanced but nothing above and beyond.

Pours a gorgeous golden color with that big DIPA haze supporting a creamy off white head. The nose has pineapple and mango and a bit of caramalt, but it doesn’t convey the gravitas of this 9.9% ABV beer.

The taste most definitely does convey the heft of this beer, with big pineapple and mango notes up front, a dash of ripe tangerine, and a significant caramalt note at the back of the taste as the warming alcohol note reminds you that you’re drinking a big beer.

From the look, this beer should be well carbed and dry (per the WCDIPA style), but it’s a bit on the oily side. Yet I find myself drinking this like someone’s trying to take it away from me - in a hurry. I’d gladly try this again and again.

19.2 ounce can, enjoy by 061822 stamped on the bottom. Served in a Pretentious Beer Glass The Sequel glass, the beer pours a mostly clear dark gold color with about an inch and a half off-white head that stayed around a long time. Good amount of lacing too. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like tropical fruit, pine, grapefruit, pineapple and peach. I think the taste is pretty much just like the aroma, but there's also some bready malt, orange peel and grassy flavors noticeable too. I do think the tropical fruit flavors stand out here without overpowering the others. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's slick and smooth with a good amount of carbonation. I liked this brew, worth trying if you're able to. Bought this one at a gas station so it should be readily available.

It’s a good ipa but not outstanding. The regular beer hug at 7% ABV is outstanding!

Goose Island Beer Co. "Tropical Beer Hug"
12 fl. oz. can. "SEE BOTTOM OF CAN FOR DRINK BY DATE. 14JUL22 GI 1011". Sampled on 02MAY22.

Notes via stream of consciousness: Whoah!!! This one is 9.9% ABV!!! Geebus! I knew it was tropical but I didn't see the "Imperial" part of the label. OK, let's go - it's a lightly hazy deep golden in color beneath an inch of slightly yellowed off-white foam. The aroma is indeed tropical with notes of pineapple and orange. The flavor is even fuller adding in some passionfruit, guava, peach, apricot, and grapefruit as well as a light touch of pine. There's some resin to it, and I think they may have used some caramel malt in the grain bill. The alcohol is clear which is a little bit of a drawback but at 9.9% I guess that's to be expected. Is it stronger than it should be though? Ehhh, I think it's fine. A median bitterness balances it nicely and it finishes dry - no doubt, the alcohol and a little bit of hop acidity are helping with that as well. The head held up fairly well but it didn't leave much in the way of lacing although that tends to hapen with stronger beers. As far as the "Beer Hug" line goes this might be the weakest link but I haven't sampled them all as of yet so I'll hold off on that judgment and get back to it later. What I will say is that this doesn't have the overall feel of a strong beer which kind of throws me off. This is a beer that I equate with sunshine and relaxing but at basically 10% that's not a very good idea. I also tend to drink higher alcohol beers at night while reading before bed or just relaxing but this is, at least in my mind, not really that kind of beer because it is so tropical. Just my 2¢. It's well made and well balanced; give it a shot.

Review from a 19.2 oz can (less than ideal but duty calls)
Poured a touch out just to see, color is lighter than I was expecting for such a heavy beer.
Taste reminds me of overripe fruits made into a boozy cocktail up front with more typical dank notes on the back end. Mouth feel is more appropriately dense for the ABV and flavor than the color was. The thickness and fruit flavors almost make it feel slick.
Overall, solid option for the non-hop lovers crowd who want a higher ABV in an IPA. Could definitely see this as a great high ABV summer option.

20AUG22. Opened and reviewed on: 4/21/22

Looks: it's almost strange to see such a clear golden liquid for a big IPA... Where's the haze?? Haha. It's seriously gold. White foamy too is robust.

Nose: Smells highly sweet, very tropically fruity in the hops with a boozy heat tingle (9.9%abv after all) long, sweet caramel scented malt.

Feel & Flavor: Big boozy heat upfront, like fruity vodka style. A crisp bite at first that quickly becomes very laid-back and slick. The hops that smelled sweet and tropical, taste more like very dry earth and golden malted grains of the malt side flow right in. Once again, it's really boozy.

Overall, definitely get that dry hopped flavor, not so much in the feel however. Boozy heat is cranked up with little complexity to back it up. It's interesting and yet, practically unforgiving.

Picked these up for .50/can on slightly outdated clearance. Pretty boozy flavor but overall not bad. Probably wouldn't pay full price, but hey!

Clear light amber color with a substantial foamy white head with good retention and plenty of nice lacing.
The aroma is light caramel malt with plenty of tropical fruit notes and a hint of pine.
The taste brings more of the tropical fruit forward - citrus, pineapple, passion fruit, mango and peach with the sweet caramel malt as backup. The finish is somewhat dry and peppery with a lingering grapefruit and pine resin.
The body is medium/full, smooth and creamy, almost oily, very nice.
Altogether, this is a surprisingly tasty and enjoyable brew, very drinkable and very enjoyable.

Best by 5/20/22. 19.2oz can poured into a tulip.

Pours golden with decent clarity; fluffy white head that falls leaving really nice retention and nice lacing.

The aromas are subtle with some tropical notes. Hints of citrus as well. Some crackers and fresh bread. Malts are there. Mild alcohol aromas show up as it warms.

The flavors basically follow the nose for the most part. More tropical notes along with some citrus. Some coconut and pineapple. Also some hints of peach and apricot. Some grapefruit and orange in the mix. Some soap. More crackers and breads. Hints of pine. Solid bitterness. Malts do their thing. Finishes juicy and dry at the same time. Subtle alcohol notes, but nothing crazy.

Mouthfeel is full-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's smooth and very fluffy.

This is a solid DIPA. It's not flashy or anything too crazy, but it's simply enjoyable and fun to drink. Not bad at all. I'm also a big fan of the 19.2oz can format.
