This double dry-hopped double IPA grabs you with a big tropical beer hug—bursting with hops, hops and more hops. Notes of mango, pineapple, peach, and citrus are followed up with dank pine notes. Like a bear hug... but from a beer.

I've read the reviews, and I can't say that I disagree with any of them. But I will point out a few notes on this beer. First, it is dry. I mean significantly more dry than what you would expect from a fruity IPA. Second, at the $2.79 that I paid for a 19.2 ounce can, four of these clock in right around what a six pack of comparable fruity IPA's costs. So at 9.9% abv (and I know this is Beer Advocate, not Alcohol Advocate), you certainly get what you pay for. It's a 3 across the board.

Golden color with a thin head.
Nice tropical aroma with notes of mango, lychees and pineapple.
Flavor with notes of pineapple, booze, grapefruit, toasted malts, wheat and white fruits. Dry and bitter aftertaste.
Light to medium body with appropriate carbonation. Alcohol of 9.9% was hard to hide behind its relatively lower body.
Booze Double IPA with a great tropical aroma. Compared to malt liquors, it sure beats them over cost benefit and outright flavor. But lags behind the IPA crowd on balance.

The mix of "tropical" hop flavors, bitterness and general booziness just doesn't agree with my palate. This is the only IPA I've had that made me have to fight with my gag reflex to finish the can. It's not disgusting or especially hard to drink or anything, but... if they just went all in on the bitterness I could down it without a problem, but something about the way they try to cover it up the booze with sweetness makes it tough to drink.
It's not an adjunct lager and it seems to have a fairly high rating here just on the basis of that fact. But in many ways I feel like this sort of malt liquor IPA is more of a bastardization of IPAs than a mediocre AAL is a bastardization of pilsners.
Almost always leads to a killer hangover, for me.
It does have 10% abv though, so it serves a purpose.

This is the Steel Reserve of IPA’s. Nice smell and flavors, you have a moment of surprise, maybe this will be my new favorite, nice mouthfeel at first, then the bitterness lingers too long resulting in a thick and syrupy conclusion. At $4 for a big can, 9.9%, a Stairway to the Dark Side

Picked up a few tall boys at the convenience mart. Let’s give it a spin. Popping the top is lots of grapefruit and passion fruit. Pours into my oversized pint with a massive head that stays up forever. Taste through the thick head is syrupy mouthfeel with a sweet yet biting hop bite. Bananas, grapefruit and some pine present. Hop bite get more bitter and builds to a clingy bitter pine tar finish. ABV of 9.9% is well hidden under the hops. A nice drinker for your IPA aficionado looking for a quick buzz.

Another cheap, high ABV beer kicked out by a known craft brewer and shipped to a gas station near you. Most seem inoffensive and scarcely remarkable. This one falls on the higher end of that scale.
