Tropical Beer HugTropical Beer Hug
Notes: This double dry-hopped double IPA grabs you with a big tropical beer hug—bursting with hops, hops and more hops. Notes of mango, pineapple, peach, and citrus are followed up with dank pine notes. Like a bear hug... but from a beer.

Next up is the Goose Island Tropical Beer Hug. This one clocks in at 9.9 ABV. It pours a distinctly clear straw gold with a white head. The malt is forward on the nose. The taste is different. I do taste the malt, but there's an odd morphing flavor before the fruit notes become dominant. For an Imperial IPA from such an established brewery, I again expect better. It almost has an oily or oddly bitter aftertaste.

$2.99 USD per 19.2 fl oz pull-tab can (single) at Breaux Mart Magazine St, New Orleans, LA.

Its ABV is somewhat well hidden, though 9.9% is bound to creep in. Warm but not fusel hot. Citrus and tropical fruit intermingle to decent effect without dazzling. Lychee, tangerine, mango, orange, passionfruit.

Hop profile isn't anything special, but it's fine. A generally decent IIPA, but not one that will usurp Lagunitas Sucks in terms of easy to find high quality expressions of the style.

I see no need to ever buy it again, but it's not a bad brew by any stretch - just not a better beer than the myriad others lining the shelves in the overcrowded style.

This was another decent offering from the Goose Island 12er I have. Nice dark orange look, lightly fruity smell, and crisp feel on the backend. Speaking of the smell, it was booze-forward, but not so much on the taste. But no worries, you do get to feel it, eventually.

Poured from a can into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a clear golden-amber color with a small puffy head of white foam. The head fades rather fast, receding to leave a tiny bit of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is strong of a pineapple aroma mixed with other tropical fruit smells of tangerine, mango, and papaya. Along with these aromas comes notes of cracker malt and grain as well as some aromas of a light grapefruit and earthy hop.
Taste – The taste begins with sweet pineapple and tangerine flavor that is accompanied by a cracker malt and a bit of grain. Upfront there is also a nice hop flavor of a grapefruit and herbal nature, both of which flavors create the hop taste backbone of the brew. As the taste advances a light earthy and pine hop flavor join in, all while the sweet gets enhanced with more pineapple along with some grape and apricot. Towards the end the graininess fades with a smooth, slightly doughy flavor replacing it. With very little alcohol in the flavor profile, one is left with a rather dangerously sweet and nicely hopped taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is slightly more thick and chewy with a carbonation level that is a tad on the low side. For the mix of sweet pineapple and malt, along with the abv, the feel makes this a very easy drinker indeed.
Overall – At 9.9 % abv, this is a dangerously easy drinking IPA. Very flavorful and approachable with a nice balance. A rather well done brew overall.

19.2 oz. Can
Best By: 30 Sep 22

Poured into a Tree House glass a very nice clear/clean dark golden yellow color, very nice carbonation, with a very nice thick/creamy two-finger plus off-white head, which leaves some very nice sticky lacing behind. The nose is pretty nice, malty, hoppy, with a pretty nice citrus complex (orange, tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, mango, peach). The taste is pretty nice, malty, hoppy, with a pretty nice citrus complex (orange, tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, mango, peach), pretty nice piney note. Full Body, ABV is hidden very nicely, definitely a sipper. Overall, a pretty tasty brew.

Poured from 19.2oz can into a dimpled mug. Date on can is 10/30/22, so I'm assuming that's a best-by date.

Appearance: medium golden hue with a light effervescence and a crystal-clear body. Head is a thick finger of frothy ivory foam with good retention. Pretty!

Smell: sweet, herbal, and earthy, with a definite suggestion of bitterness to come.

Taste: very malty and a sticky sweet with citrusy, earthy hops. Bitterness is rather high, though perhaps not quite high enough to combat the relative sweetness. It's not terrible or anything, but it does not have much finesse.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a good level of carbonation and a decent creaminess.

Overall: this beer is definitely imperial at 9.9%, but it doesn't deliver an imperial hoppy deliciousness the way I would have hoped.

19.2 oz can. I think I paid $2.50 for it. Brewed with Pilsner malt and Carahell. Hopped with Nugget, Sultana, Citra, Mosaic, Eureka, Azacca, Strata.
45 IBU. 9.9% ABV

Pours out to a sparkingly clear pale golden, forming a sticky off white head with very good retention and sticky sheets of lace. Nose is not as pungent as I was expecting given all the hops. Pine>Cat pee>Grapefruit. Mouthfeel is medium bodied syrupy and a bit cloying. A little warmth but not as much as I was expecting given the ABV. Once it warms up, there is some harsher fusels appearing and the warmth becomes mroe apparent. The taste is somewhat flimsier that I expected as well. Very simple malt bill translates into very simple flavor. Sometimes a simple malt bill is a great canvas for the hops, but even the hops here aren't really putting on a good show. The hops flavor is actually pretty one dimensional and flimsy. All the other big players, New Belgium, Lagunitas, Sierra Nevada, Sam Adams (and in my neck of the woods, Bells and Founders)...even their standard IPA has more hop punch than this. Something wrong happened here. Is this Fultons Goose Island talking or A-B? I'm thinking the later. This isn't a beer hug...it's a collegial handshake with a coworker you really don't care for...or a cheap way to get drunk.

Very nice white froth graces a almost clear golden body. Smell is absolutely out of this world! Bursting with tropical whiffs of pineapple, ripe peaches and mango.. I’m not sure I’ve smelled a “new” dipa that smells this good in quite some time. The flavor isn’t as grand, but still not bad at all! Citrus flavored hoppiness with some pine toward the tail end. Not quite dank but Is followed by a fairly sweet finish. I miss the days of Goose Island delivering great beer year round! I hope they get back to that and if this is the proof.. I am in! This is what a tropical summer dipa should be

Picked up a single from my local grocer beer cooler 6-9-22 for $2.00. Best by 20AUG22; consumed 8-12-22.

Beer poured clear gold with a large, long lasting white head.

Nose is a nice fresh tropical fruit forward.

Taste is a lighter but substantial malt base balanced with orange, peach, and mango finishing with a touch of gooseberry bitterness. Comes across a little muddled.

Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied and refreshing.

Overall a pretty decent beer at a reasonable price.

this isnt bad beer overall, especially when you consider its extremely sneaky strength, its slightly fusel at temperature, but the tropical hops are real in this, it truly pops with juicy summer character, and it refreshes in warm weather despite its sleepy enormity, this unknowingly set me up for a big drunk evening, but i enjoyed every drop. part of the success here is the lightness of the grain, its straw colored, without much body, and very dry, so it starts and stays lighter than most of these, aided in part by the relative lack of bitterness in the hop profile, it doesnt then mandate any richer sweeter grains for balance, and because this seems mostly dry hopped, i actually find it to be reasonable well balanced anyway. i get pineapple and mango notes to this, must be some mosaic, maybe some el dorado too with a little melon in here, but im not sure what they actually use. a hint of key lime, fresh orange, and a more generic citrus back end as it warms. the alcohol does peak through, but by the end its not out of place, and it actually sort of enhances the fruitiness. maybe slightly metallic at temperature too, but never cheap tasting. overall a different kind of big ipa than i am used to, and it caught me off guard. i have been impressed by this beer hug pack, cool beers, a new look for goose island. be careful having more than one of these...

Pours a clear gold. Thick foam. Sweet tropical aroma. Big bitter hop body. Tropical pineapple sweetness. Bitterness and sweetness are both pretty prominent but they don't really work very well together. A little disappointing. Atleast the ABV is high.

Pours an effervescent & bright gold with 3+ fingers of eggshell colored head. Some lacing & head retention

S: Passion fruit, papaya, guava

T: Follows the nose, some green melon & nectarine as well up front. Dryness, pomelo & passion fruit as this warms, a little lime too. Finishes with nectarine, a little dryness, a whisper of pineapple booze & lime

MF: Medium body, fairly restrained carbonation; good balance

Solid offering, drinks great for the heft; one I'd buy again

I keep trying new IPAs thinking I'll eventually figure out what the craze is all about. I've tried something like 50 different IPAs and I've enjoyed maybe 3. Ales, pilsners, hefeweizens, porters, and stouts are more my thing. I feel like I'm tasting grapefruit, pomelo, and weed in this one, maybe a little bit of pineapple but no mango. I'll pass on this one from now on.

The age of 19.2 oz pounders are upon us. I’m cool with them, but tend to impulse buy from the local gas station’s super-cold cooler. I think there’s a strategy. If one 12 oz can don’t get it for me, I can have one and a half, which, of course, is justified,.,. somehow, by only pulling one pop top.

The quality of these offerings are another topic.
So, sitting side by side on the top shelf at WaWa in Fort Myers, FL, are:
Cigar City Florida Man (8.5% ABV)
New Belgium Imperial Voodoo Ranger (9%)
Goose Island Tropical Beer Hug (9.9%)
My choice, $2.99 for each.
Line ‘em up, knock ‘em down.,.

I feel happier about quaffing the Florida Man due to its superior look, smell, feel, taste, freshness & ‘overall’. Just sayin’.,.
Voodoo Ranger? It’s OK.

Tropical Beer Hug is a buzz sud. I don’t believe there’s any great nuance that makes it anything more (or less) than a quick hit. There’s no ‘geekiness’, no great foamy head, no unique fragrance, no sparkle in the pour, no big hop bite, it’s kinda flat, and yada yada yada.,.

Verdict? This ain’t a hug. It’s a flick on the end of the nose and not worth the calories hit.

12 oz can from a mixed 12 pack with a BB date of 18 September 2022 stamped on the bottom.

Appearance. Deep amber colored body with high clarity and a good white head.

Tropical fruit notes completely dominate the aroma while the flavor also brings some earthy hop notes. Moderate bitterness for the style despite a clear suggestion of sweetness in the aroma. High ABV is incompletely hidden in both smell and taste.

Drank from the 19.2 oz can. Smell is fruity and piney up front with sweetness in the back. Citrus. Mango. Pineapple. Berries? Taste is subdued with earth hops and balancing malt profile. Some peach and citrus. Some piney bitterness in the finish. I wouldn't call the flavor huge, but it is OK. Overall, this is surprisingly easy drinking for its ABV. Refreshing but strong.

From a 545 ml. can with a BB date of 30 Sep 22. Sampled June 16, 2022 (My birthday).

The appearance is a slight cloudy looking golden color underneath a moderate ivory head that fizzles down to a ring after a few moments. Lacing.

The aroma is nothing extraordinary but it emits sensations of guava and other tropical fruits. Also a bready malt base.

The mouthfeel is light-medium.

The flavor is kicked off with the grainy, bready sweetness followed quickly by the tropical fruit bitterness to cap it off. A semi-dry and semi-crisp finish. Balanced but nothing above and beyond.
