stopped by my local bottle shop to nab some goodies on my way home from an extended day of work and to my surprise, saw this gem up on the growler station so nabbed a 16oz fill. enjoyed from a brewpub snifter.

a - through the growler, the beer looks like some sort of citric juice with a murky semi transparent yellow orange. looked the same in the glass. thin bubbly head that didn't last long leaving nary a trace of its once prominent cap on the surface of the brew.

s - white wine on sofie. WOW. smells like a match made in heaven. really nice orange peel and grapefruit with the wood.

t - yum. really nice pair of beer and barrel. the wine adds a bit of a vinous sting on the finish. not sure if brett was added as some reviewers suggest, but it sure feels like there is some in there on the flavor which gives the beer a crispness ala crooked stave.

m - prickly, almost over carbonated.

o - overall a really nice treatment on sofie. this had come around town and i thought i had missed it, but was really excited to stumble upon.

Reviewing the Sofie Paradisi from Goose Island Beer Company out of Chicago, Illinois. This is their year-round saison aged with grapefruit.

Score: 90

Tap pour served in a 16 oz pint glass and enjoyed on 06/09/13. Review is from iPhone notes.

Appearance: Pours a dull yellow color with a think layer of fizzy white head that settles to a broken ring around the glass. Poor lacing, bad retention. 3/5

Smell: Grapefruit, lemon, touch of oak and a hint of funk. Weizen-like notes. A touch of banana, and fruity wheat beer like notes. Smells like slightly funky grapefruit juice. 4/5

Taste: Grapefruit with a light funky twist. Very juicy and light on the palate, like a fermented/old juice. Belgian yeast fruitiness, hint of lemon, and a dash of pepper towards finish. Finishes with fruity yeast and grapefruit flavor. 4/5

Mouthfeel: Super juicy mouthfeel. Light bodied, spot on light but fizzy carbonation. Light citrus sweetness with a hint of counterbalancing earthiness. 4.25/5

Overall: A refreshing and juicy summer beer. I am not a fan of the style generally, but this variant had a nice "mass appeal" to it due to heavy "grapefruiting" -- think of it as fermented grapefruit juice. If something like that appeals to you, give it a whirl.

Cost: $8 for a 16 oz pour.

From 05/15/13 notes. had 2-8 oz. pours of this on tap at Pony Bar on the UES in NYC because I liked it so much.

a - Pours a somewhat transparent bright yellow-golden color with one inch of bright white head and moderate to high carbonation. Looks like a nice saison.

s - Smells of sour grapefruits, white wine, citrus, sour fruits, oak, orange, brett, lemon, floral hops, some pine hops, and light vanilla and earthy notes. Amazing nose; just a ton of fresh citrus, white wine, and sour fruits to it. I loved this nose.

t - Tastes of grapefruit, citrus, sour lemon, oak, white wine, vanilla, floral hops, earthy notes, oranges, and light pepper. Very nice taste; not quite as sour or citrusy as the nose, but really nice still.

m - Medium bodied saison and low carbonation. Very easy to drink and smooth; could drink a ton of this one.

o - Overall I think Sofie is a pretty good beer, but Sofie Paradisi is a great one. I absolutely loved the nose on this one; one of the best smelling saison's I've had, and while the taste fell off a tiny bit, it was still quite good, and it's very easy to drink. I'm really hoping they make this one more often because I would buy it all the time.
