Maybe an American Strong Ale for lack of a better term, the bartender said it was a "sour" for what it's worth. It resembled a bourbon-barrel aged Oud Bruin, so it's a little confusing to say the least. Fobab '08 program lists it as "Brown Ale aged with sour cherries in a bourbon barrel".

A light fizzy skim quickly fades, leaving a ring around a swirling island of foam. In the light it has a mahogany edge, otherwise black and still. Sweet bourbon notes as it warms, it definitely needed to warm to room temperature. Some fruity fusel alcohol esters surface when swirled, with some wood on the back end.

Full bodied feel initially that peters out some towards a thin finish. This is forgiven since the flavors are so savory and complex that you tend to forget about the mouthfeel. Makers Mark, cherry cola, and ash, blended with the richness of black forest cake. Faintly tart cherry in the aftertaste. The low carbonation gives it an almost vinous feel, perfect for sipping. Two glasses were my personal limit in one sitting.

this is a special occasion brown ale. similar to the worryin' ale but aged in whiskey cask with cherries. really something. 8.5%abv.

pours like a flemish red. dark burgundy color... murky. with almost no head. smell is boozy, vanilla, cherry, malt. somewhat that in the palate. i tend to have trouble with vanilla and over emphasized alcohol. the flavor separates if the volume isn't sufficient. in this case the density is one of the biggest weaknesses of the beer. makes the alcohol bitter in the face of the hops. nail polish like. not much hop but it lingers in the palette. makes the vanilla seems artificial. cherry blend is gentle and right on. the wood is quite nice. i'm not sure if the sour quality of the beer makes it not smooth or if its the alcohol interaction. it may be because i'm not much of a bourbon man. the density doesn't hold compared to other bourbon cask beers i've had. although i respect the beer. thats why i review it. its nice to see something of this caliber come from something local. wish it was a bit smoother to the end.

had it again about a week and half later and its a little smoother around that edges. the alcohol was better hidden. the vanilla didn't taste false as a result. not too boozy now. i'm a fan of this one but i like flemish reds and oud bruins so its not for your 'i don't like dark beers' type.
