The place is small, but chill. The tap selection isn't overly impressive but there are usually a couple decent beers. I've never been blown away by anything I've tried there but I haven't been thoroughly disappointed either.

It's a place I wouldn't necessarily seek out but if you're in the area and just wanna check out some organic beer, it's worth a trip. The staff is friendly, there's plenty of parking, and the prices are reasonable.

Santa Cruz has a reputation for being "earthy", and Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing fills that niche with all-organic beers (I personally couldn't care if they're organic or not, it's beer and I love to taste the goods). Its location seems out of place however, as it sits among a small area already filled with wine tasting rooms. But it seems right too, as the area is rather quiet. From the urban jungle where I'm from, the location was a pleasant change of pace.

Climb up a flight of steps and get to the tasting room. It's very small inside, yet is able to hold more than 20 people. Additional seating is available outside too, and it being a nice day, was the place to be. The beers are listed on a wall, many which are available year round (pale ale, stout, IPA, wheat ale), plus a few that are available on a special basis (fresh hopped Black IPA, imperial blonde). Samplers can be had, and so are 12 ounce and 16 ounce pours (for $3.75 and $5.50 respectively).

Friendly, accessable service behind the bar. Reasonable quality of the beer. And they serve food too? Well, much of the food is catered, but they do serve Bavarian pretzels at a fair price. That sounds like a good way to spend part of a Saturday afternoon. Bring cash, cuz credit cards are not accepted.

Stopped by the Ingalis street market complex, primarily to check out the multiple winery tasting rooms. However, as we got there a bit early, I stopped on by the SCMB taproom to sample their IPA.

The tap room is a fairly small affair, with a 6 seat bar area and then something like 4 small tables. They have some local art work on the walls, as well as some beer related paraphenalia. The place comes across as a fairly small, cozy place to hang out and have a beer. On this particular day, there were 7 regular line-up beers, along with 3 seasonals. I went for a glass of the IPA, which was decent and pleasant; the sort of beer I could see myself ordering at a pizzeria or diner. Service was OK. The woman tending the bar was pleasant and helpful, and drinks came very quickly. Didn't order any food, but I'm sure it's outstanding. The menu sign indicated they get their food items from Kelly's bakery next door, which from experience I know to be excellent.

The taproom is a pleasant enough place, but I can't imagine ever making a habit of visiting this place. The beer is decent, but hardly remarkable or outstanding, and considering that pints are $5 a pop ($5.50 for the seasonals), I'm not sure I can see any reason to come back. Also, food prices here are VERY high. Burgers are $12.50 ($13.50 if you get it with cheese), and it wasn't clear from the menu whether or not that comes with anything else. A basket of fries here is $6 (and I don't believe they're drenched in duck fat or foie gras).

Really can't see any reason to come back here, frankly...

Cool place. Small but nicely decorated in dark woods and brass. Or at least I think it's brass, because the small tasting room area is dominated by this gold lame (insert accent mark here) tree. The tree branches have hooks upon which mugs engraved with a regular's name are hanging. How much to gain such a mug? I asked.

A mere thousand bucks, came the reply, with everyone staring to catch my outraged facial reaction/double-take. The long yard fee is actually a good deal. For a grand you get a free drink every day and can consume their regular offerings for $3/pint (regular price $5)- FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. (or theirs, I presume). Quick math calculations indicate that going four days a week and drinking three beers daily would make your money back in about 4-5 months.

I found the beer to be somewhat average in quality, with the except of the special barleywine and the porter. It's a nice location that I'd probably hang out at occasionally. Would likely keep my thousand bucks in me pocket, tho, or spend it on a couple of bottles of Black Tuesday... /s

Located in the west side of Santa Cruz. They open at 12pm and close at 10pm (?). There is also a happy hour. There is a small bar area with stools and a few "tables". A locals kind of place, where everyone but me seemed to be a regular. They have a deal with a bakery a few doors down to supply them food, you order from a menu and I assume they deliver it to you at the bar, and they also offer basic snacks like chips etc. When I visited they had 12 beers on tap-including their regular line up and a few draft only seasonals including a Spring Pale Ale and some kind of Fruit Ale. I tried the Spring Pale and thought it may be the best of any of the several beers I have had from this brewery. They have bombers and kegs to go-but no bombers of their draft only seasonals. Pints are $5 for regular brews and a little more for seasonals. Bombers are more expensive here than you can buy at the store.

I like their beers, and if I lived within walking distance I would probably be a regular.
