After a stop at Craggie, I walked around the corner to Asheville Brewing for dinner and more beer. This downtown location is spacious. A long bar stretches to the left of the door, the turns towards the center of the room. Liquor and wine are served as well as their own beer.

The food menu featured pizza and calzones, but also had a pretty extensive list of sandwiches, salads and pastas. I ordered a calzone with sausage, mushrooms, and peppers, and it was HUGE. It was also quite tasty.

Asheville Brewing had about ten taps. I had their Nina Porter, Scout Stout and Shiva IPA. I preferred the Stout. The Shiva was okay, but I wanted a bigger hop kick than it delivered. They also run one beer through a randal every thursday, but I arrived too late to try the white ale through raspberries.

I received excellent service on my visit. I had a super bartender, that really made my stay worth while. I also met one of the brewers, Trey. He gave me a quick tour of the brewhouse, and gave me a little insight into the Asheville scene.

Asheville Brewing was my best stop on the first leg of my NC journey.

I really enjoyed the beer and the food was fantastic, but the service was absolutely horrible. I'm almost positive our server was stoned out of his mind, which would've been cool IF he would have remembered to check on us occasionally. I would return for the food and beer but definitely hope I get a different server next time.

I much preferred this location to the pizza place / brewery / theater ABC. The restaurant is pretty generic, but the outside area has more character to it. Much like the other location, there is a good amount to choose from beer-wise, and a good range of styles, and the tap list is different. My favorite here was the apricot gose, which came as quite a surprise. The food is about the same: sandwiches, pizza, etc. Service was fine.

Bring a designated driver and do a bar hop. All within easy walking distance: Funkatorium, Tasty, Asheville Brewing, Burial, Green Man, Twin Leaf. It's hard to beat this neighborhood as far as beer venues goes. I'd say this is the true heart of Asheville right here.

Walking in there is a smallish bar that is L shaped and can seat 10. Some booths and table fill the rest of the place including a slightly divided room in the back. Plenty of natural light from the windows here. A blackboard lists 15 beers on draft. Only had one Shiva IPA here and it was decent. Ordered some appetizers which were mediocre. Service was friendly but a bit slow, but there was a good crowd here.

My visit was on a Tuesday afternoon for a business trip. We were looking for somewhere to bide time and this brewpub seemed like a good choice. They have a nice outdoor area that is almost the size of the restaurant...looks like it would make a decent music venue, but currently hosted one family, several hipsters with dogs, and a couple of bums. We decided to eat inside because of the dogs and bums.

The brewery was very representative of Asheville with tattooed employees and a very social crowd. Maybe we chose the wrong menu items, but the beer and food were both just OK. Still not a bad place to relax, but with so many breweries in Asheville, I would pass over ABC next time.

Next we walked a ways past the local bus station and into the "brewery district" for a visit to one of the city's oldest (1998) craft breweries. The bar itself was small and a bit over-hot already at noon on this fine spring day, so we settled outside in the large covered patio. Service was a little spotty out there, but the servers were pleasant when they actually came to the table. They had a lot of beers of varying styles, but most were just mediocre. The best of the lot for me were the Bronson Oat Brown and the Holy Ninja Oyster Porter. A big deal was made about their recently released double IPA, but I didn't love it. The brewery is known for pizza, pub food, and being kid friendly. They can some their beers and I found them in restaurants and bars all over town. Worth a spin by, but not the best place we found in town.
