Very Good
Trickster IPATrickster IPA
Notes: What’s this? An intriguing disguise to tempt and delight-that’s my surprise. If you crave a dank treat and others don’t lure, you’re already discovered the hoppy cure. Spiced with Simcoe, El Dorado, mosaic and the Ghost of Ted.

Having on draft at Five Points Public House in Albemarle, NC

Look: The Trickster has a golden yellow hue that runs hazy on the initial pour. Slight foamy head leads to nice lacing as the beer goes does.

Smell: To be a 7 percenter, at first smell the beer smells more stronger and more dank than it ends up being. You get a aroma of pineapple, mango and grapefruit, due to the combination of hops involved.

Taste: You get a decent amount of the fruit flavors i mentioned upfront, with the mix of the dank hops, maybe even some citrus involved. Finish feels more malty/bready on the backend, with the fruitiness getting less as the beer warms and feels more muted.

Feel: Boasts some moderate carbonation but this beer, like most hazy-esque IPAs I’ve had, seems to go down very smooth, making them easy to drink.

Overall: Honestly, it’s been a long while since I’ve had a Green Man offering (at least two years). With this new kick of hazy IPAs being a niche, this is one of the better ones I’ve had of the style, though I’m still not the biggest fan. I would have again if I saw it. Would be a good spring/summer offering and I’m intrigued enough to try one of the other versions of it.

Trickster is a crystal-clear, effervescent pale-amber beer topped by a medium, slightly pebbly off-white head that leaves fair lacing in the form of rotten bands and caverns; head retention is modest. The nose is medium in intensity, leading with toasty malt and cotton candy, backed by an enticing, distinctive blend of florals comprising candy-like spice, cannabis and more subtle perfume, with a bit of citrus and modest alcohol overtones. Up front, the palate is medium-bitter grapefruit with candy-like florals; mid-palate the hops expand to follow the nose, plus a nice orange citrus character and a bit of grassiness. A bit of bready malt shows, pushing perceived bitterness back a bit to modest-for-style. The finish is pretty clean, just a slight bit of nutty malt and perfume, followed by the onset of a mild, slightly perfumey, slightly yeasty citrus/pine bitterness that lasts for awhile. Retrogustative olfaction is candy-like and grassy. Mouthfeel is on par with the light-medium body, and is fairly astringent; the texture is slightly creamy and slightly peppery from the well-expressed carbonation. (12 oz bottle, no code date)

A: Pours a crystal clear golden burnt orange in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising quickly from the bottom of the glass with moderate golden yellow highlights. The beer has a two finger tall foamy beige head that reduces to a large patch of thin film covering the entire surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of toasted, biscuit, and caramel malts with slightly stronger than moderate aromas of citrus/grapefruit, floral, and herbal hops.

T: Upfront there are slightly lighter than moderate flavors of toasted, biscuit, and caramel malts with a slightly heavier than light amounts of caramel sweetness. That is followed by slightly stronger than moderate flavors of citrus/grapefruit, floral, and herbal hops which impart a light to moderate amount of bitterness which does not linger for long.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Hints of dryness in the finish.

O: Easy to drink and refreshing with a very pleasant hop profile. Definitely one that I would happily have again.

A little over carbonated but apart from that a very good dank IPA.

The perfect summer IPA! Tropical, fruity, and refreshing while still maintaining a strong hoppy flavor, a nice carbonation, and a perfect bitter bite going down. This will be in the fridge all summer!

An orange beer with a nose full of citrus and caramel. A thin film of head is pervasive and bands of lacing cling to the glass. The taste is sweet with caramel and orange that melts into a appropriate bitterness that, while it lingers, does not throw off the balance.

Poured from a 16 oz can into my Duvel tulip. Cool can. LORD OF THE FLIES-esuqe.

Look: Murky old gold. Not entirely hazy but a little bit. Nice off white head, about a finger retained.
Smell: Pineapple bomb. Sweet green apple. Candied pineapple. Fresh cut fescue grass. Candied lemon.
Taste: Orange juice. Sweet Toffee. Slightest black pepper/alcohol notes.
Feel: Medium bodied. As it warms up, the peppery, alcoholic notes pick up. Not a bad thing, but something that keeps this from being crush-able, IMO.
Overall: Very solid offering. I think this beer would pair really well with food. Sharp cheeses (Stilton or cheddar) and spicy Szechuan come to mind.

16 oz. pint can BB 9/9/19, poured into IPA glass
Bright yellow golden hazy glow , tall energetic head, bubbles rise joyfully
Fresh green citrus, tropicals, very summery and light and exciting, some greenery in the shade
Follows nose and with a tantalizing feel from the agile balance of light malt, fruity hop carbonation and bitterness.
Overall, an excellent IPA to try, enjoy, repeat and share. Great with spicy Asian snacks in summer!
