12/30/15 from notes...pours rich dark amber brown. Heavy foam layers the side. Ready toffee nose. Taste is a rich toasty malt. Hearty. Caramels too. Really robust perfect blend. Excellent.

It's a fine beer, however there are a few things about it that offsets the style. A good firm malt base seems to headge on sweet barley grains with a bit of astringency (husks) in the mouthfeel. The hops also seem a bit high, citrus / pine, and bite-ey. But the beer comes together nicely with a cleanly brewed taste of fermentation and attenuation. Nearly mint-y in the finish. Body could be maltier with a higher gravity (use English malts) would have sweetened the beer and rounded out the (American) hop abrasion. Call it beer, and it's pretty tasty stuff. Call it an ESB, and it stumbles a bit.

12 ounce can into pint glass, canned on 4/20/2016. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy deep orange/copper color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, plum, pear, apple, herbal, grass, light toffee, and yeast/toasted earthiness. A bit too fruity/yeasty aromas, but not overwhelming. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, toasted biscuit, and nuttiness; with lighter notes of toffee, plum, pear, apple, herbal, grass, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Very mild herbal, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, light toffee/fruit, herbal, grass, and yeast toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness and balance of dark/bready malt and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance; and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol for 5.5%. Overall this is a very good ESB. All around nice robustness and balance of dark/bready malt and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the mildly bitter/drying finish. Nicely rich English malt complexity; with mild hop balance, and restrained English yeast fruitiness. A very enjoyable offering. Very well made for the style.

aroma a earthy hops bread and slightly metallic fragrance. a low to medium hops taste with a malt balance and a lasting dry finish and a surprising carbonation, overall a very enjoyable beer even though a departure from the esb style.

On cask at Jack of the Wood.Poured a clear rich bronze with a thin soapy-like head atop, fruity malt notes in the nose with light toast, and lingering leafy hop although light.A tad thin in the feel with malt tilted fruit on the palate, some biscuit and caramel sweetness as well makes it more malt tilted,a leafy hop smack comes in the finish.A decent ESB but I have had better.

Chestnut brown with a fingernail of tan. Moderate lacing. Chocolate malt is present in the nose. I taste chocolate malt with a hint of light bittering hops in the back of the palate. The mouth is creamy and smooth.

12 oz bottle with a bottling date of 29 July 2015.

Appearance: clear, dark brown body with a somewhat weak head that still manages to leave a bit of lacing.

Aroma: appealing; nutty and malty.
Flavor: follows the aroma but with less strength and more toffee than the aroma suggests.

Feel: near medium body with medium carbonation.

Overall: aromatic but slightly too weak flavored ESB.

I had this on draft at Twelve Bones in Asheville, NC. Nice beer, with a great brown color and decent head. Not as much on the aroma side of things as I would expect, but that could have been part of sitting outside. I got a malty backbone to this, and not so much of the hoppiness that I would have expected out of an ESB. Tasty beer, just not what I had expected.

I had this brew on tap yesterday at the Mellow Mushroom.

The color is a clear, deep reddish-brown. The head is compact and sits for a short time, leaving a constant foam and small traces of itself behind.
The smell is solid if not a bit light and thin. A nice balance of bitterness with slight sweet malts combine with lots of woody/herbal/grassy notes.
The taste is subdued but good. The bitterness is on par for the style, ESB not being as bitter as one would expect by the name or experience with, say, IPAs. That said, this one gets the style well. Lots of breads and toastiness are backed by slight notes of caramel and mix with the herbal and grassy flavors, making for a well-balanced, dry finish.
The body is medium. Nothing stands out about the mouthfeel. It's pretty smooth with an average carbonation.
This beer is certainly sessionable and makes for good drinking.

On tap at Tribeca Tavern in north Raleiigh

Pours a reddish amber with little head. Nose detects caramel and nutty malts. Taste is robust offering caramel and nutty malts but a clean hop bitterness to finish. Clean and well balanced. Medium to full bodied. A nice first introduction to Green Man.
