Black, bitter, and with a ton of hop/malt balance goes into this strong porterish ale that has dominant IPA overtones.

The black ale pours from the growler with a medium viscosity that separates the onyx liquid from the froathy tan head. Very creamy looking, the beer quickly denotes its low-lying carbonation and head retention and falls to a coffee-like stillness.

Sharp grassy aromas strike the nose first and with the full brunt of grapefruit, pine, and leafy hop character. Backed with hearty notes of coffee roast, chocolate, and malty caramel scents, the beer isn't all hops.

The flavor profile follow a similar path except that its the malty rich chocolate and coffee flavors that coat the mouth with slim toffee sweetness to boot. A middle palate releases the malt richness just a bit and allows room for the hoppy flavors of freshly mulled grasses, white grapefruit pulp and pith, and the sharp flavor from the vegetable matter of hops that deliver a "fresh-hop" or "homegrown" hop character. As the flavors develop in finish the balance continues to turn decidedly bitter and resiny, further suppressing the malt flavors.

Full bodied to start, the beer is much richer than that prescribed for IPAs, but as the beer turns hoppy and bitter in flavor, the mouthfeel lightens considerably as the carbonation carries a mild prickling sensation and as the alcohol warmth dries the mouth in conjunction to the resiny hop dryness. Finishing ultimately semi-dry for the style, the aftertaste also allows for a lingering hop derived astringency to be felt.

The culmination of heavy roast, grass, and grapefruit balances well, but the sharper taste and feel of the chlorophenolic hop character is just too much to score higher.
