I have now been to this brewpub twice--the first time was about 2 years ago, and the service was horrible (my friend and I were the only people at the bar, and yet waited for 10 minutes before anyone could be bothered to help us, and then did so rudely) and the beer mediocre. I chose to wait to review until I tried the place again.

So, now it's 2 years later--the service was still awful, I couldn't believe it. The same thing happened--my wife and I waited at the bar as the staff walked back and forth and wouldn't make eye contact. Finally, I flagged a waitress down--and she wasn't surprised at all that we had been waiting so long and had an 'oh, well, that's how it is here' type of attitude. This time, the staff was a bit more friendly, though it took forever again to get a 2nd round.

I tried 3 of their beers--IPA, brown and red. All were fine, better than I had remembered, but still pretty mediocre. The brown and red were a touch syrupy, almost like an extract brew.
The atmosphere was pretty laid back, but the physical place is a bit run down looking and kind of dirty. The whole place smelled like old, dirty deep fryer.

If I'm in Silverton again, I might stop in, but this isn't worth the trip if on a brewery vacation. Not by a longshot.

I dropped by after a day of hiking. I tried to stop by in October, however they didn't follow their own hours.
You've seen other reviews. Decor is biker turned into brewer with stupid uncomfortable motorcyle bar stools. Harley Davidson Flag behind the bar and a wicker (yes wicker) motorcyle above the bathrooms. Now I'm not saying anything bad about bikers, but this is kinda cheesy.
There were televisions all playing the same college baseball game and no one watching them.
Staff was all involved in trying to check out one customer.
The brewer had time to answer one question of mine about brewing @ high altitudes.
Thought they were closing down early for a birthday party only to find out it was the breweries 5th anniversary the day before and they forgot to take down the sign
Overall---should have driven back into Durango and hit one of their 4 breweries.
I wouldn't go out of my way to go there and probably won't go back when in town.
Sorry I always hope the best for microbreweries but must come to the conclusion some....well suck.

Kinda rough around the edges, like the whole town - the atmosphere is strictly Old West tavern, with cheeky beer-related slogans and decorations all over the place. The wait staff was a little lackadaisical (forgot to put in the order for the kids' food)l, but the food was simple and good. The chef came out to check on us, which was nice, and there appeared to be a good mix of locals and tourists drifting in and out. The beer is decent, with cheeky names, such as Bear Ass Brown and What the Helles. The best of the bunch on the generous sample platter was the Ice Pick IPA and the Bear Ass Brown.

Overall, this was a fun stop. It is certainly a great place to rest in the midst of the drive over the San Juan Mountains, which is one of the most treacherous drives in the U.S. If you are just passing through for lunch, however, do bear in mind that the drive from Silverton in either direction is extraordinarily steep and winding (trust me on this - you may think you know mountain roads, but nothing compares with this) and requires intense concentration. I do not recommend indulging heavily in beer before attempting it (particularly if you are headed north from Durango - if you think the drive INTO Silverton is wild, wait until you try headed out toward Grand Junction).

Stopped in for a beer while driving the Alpine loop - it was mid-afternoon so only limited food was available. The location is right downtown, and the bar consists of what appear to be motorcycle seats. Beer menu was on the back wall, and they probably had 8 different offerings. Among the 3 of us we sampled a few different ones, and enjoyed everything we tried - the IPA in particular stood out. The bartender was in a bad mood, and apparently wasn't shy about sharing it with the rest of us.

Despite the service I'd go back for another round of drinks .. but based on what I saw of the menu I'd probably eat elsewhere.

Their motto was "Pure as the waters that flow down these mountains." Well, I certainly saw enough of the flowing water while on the train ride north from Durango. For the unaware, that was the Durango & Silverton Railroad and it is a must for train buffs as well as casual tourists, even if you only ride one way and take the bus back. The brewpub was a few short blocks from the train station/terminus/end of the line.

The front was unimposing with only a sign hanging above the entry to give it away. The wide double doors opened outward and because it was a nice day, they were left open, creating a Wild West atmosphere. The concave aluminum m.d.s. was just to the left inside and the long bar was just to the right. Interestingly, pages from the 01 May 1897 copy of The Brewers Journal had been sealed onto the bar under acrylic. I saw ads for places in PHL and Harrisburg that are long-defunct. The back bar was minimal with a cooler of pre-filled growlers, bottles of BMC products, and wine; a couple of reefers; two deep-fat fryers; and a couple of crock pots. Needless to say, the menu was fairly minimal, also. The bar stools were motorcycle saddle-style seats. The lavatories were all of the way aft and there were standard restaurant tables and chairs in the center and along the left wall. They had a miniature toy train in the overhead chugging around in a loop and I really liked the small gift shop in the front left corner by the md.s.

Beers: They offered four house beers on my visit, and that seemed to be their capacity. They were Railroad Red (4.0 %); Twilight Peak Pale Ale (5.0 %); Hef's Playmate of the Wheat Hefeweizen (6.0 %); and Dum Blonde (5.5 %). I was curious about the lack of brewing equipment and when I inquired, I was told that just two weeks before, everything had been moved into the basement, following the removal of twenty-five feet (25') of earth and a drop of floor height of three feet (3'). Yow!

This is a tiny little place on Silverton's main street. I visited on a quiet Saturday afternoon, and there were only a few other people in the place, yet it seemed more crowded, given the bags of malts, model trains, growlers, popcorn machines, computers, and t-shirts that occupy odd corners of the bar room. At the very least, this place has a memorable character.

And...there beer is pretty good too. Though they only had three beers on tap when I visited (pale, amber, stout), all three were well-balanced, fully flavored, and showed good length. I really wished that they had more on tap!

With summer tourism picking up in Colorado, I'm sure that they'll be busy all season long. Given the quality of beer they're serving, they deserve it.

Stumbled on this place whilst on holiday from the UK. A new brewpub that opened in June 05 that is just two blocks from the Durango - Silverton train. You cannot miss the place as it has a model train going out of the wall on the front making all sorts of silly noises. Two beers are brewed, Box Car Blonde 5.0 and High Altitude Amber at 6.0. Both were deceptively smooth and drinkable.

There is a terrific amount of Silverton Brewery merchandise available in this great little brewpub.I got the T Shirt!!

Food is basic with sandwiches from $6.95 and pizzas.

A great find and I wish the husband and wife owners all the best.
