Dragonfly IPADragonfly IPA
Notes: India Pale Ale originated when the British Empire was at its height. British soldiers and civil servants were stationed all over the globe (including India), and regular ales could not survive the long journey by sea to reach them. The British solved this terrible dilemma by adding excessive amounts of hops to their beer–using the preservative properties of hops to increase the life of their beers.

Our Dragonfly India Pale Ale is true to this tradition, featuring seven hop additions to create a powerful hop profile. A solid malt base, however, tempers the bitter American hops, giving Dragonfly a balance not often found in this style. The end product is a well-balanced, malty beer with the crisp taste of hops and an exceptionally floral nose.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #83 (Dec 2013):

Reminds us of the old-school New England IPAs of the mid to late 1990s, which were shedding part of their English character by swapping in American hops, but keeping the base beer English. IPA as category has been flooded with every type of IPA under the sun.

STYLE: American IPA
ABV: 6.5%

LOOK: Semi-clear, pale copper, great head

SMELL: Dull citrus, fresh-cut grass, tobacco, yeast, tropical fruit, juicy, malty

TASTE: Medium body, very smooth, great malt foundation, grainy, grassy, stone fruit, semi-aggressive hop bitterness, orangey, rind, hint of alcohol, rustic, peppery, faint caramel, resin finish, ends semidry

12oz brown bottle with a freshness date. Sample from the brewery.

Juicy, fruity, resin, & grassy. Apple skin, green tea, peppery, & slightly toasty. Lots of flavor, certainly not like most modern IPAs but fun to sip on.

Pours a beautiful, cloudy amber. Not much head, though, even with an aggressive pour. Lacing is light.

Smells biscuity, a bit of citrusy hops. Not much else.

Ooh, tastes so good. Those biscuity malts come out ever so slightly, paving the way for a grapfruit rind hop flavor. More even balanced than a lot of others in its style. Good stuff. Mouthfeel is great. So crisp and refreshing. Carbonation is fairly high. Lots is tiny, tiny bubbles. Finishes dry.

Drinkability is high. I'm on my second and I could go for one or two more.

Notes: This is very solid beer, especially on a hot summer evening like tonight. I'd put it more in line with an American Pale Ale, but that's neither here nor there. This is sort of like a little brother to Great Lakes' Burning River.

Poured from a 16 oz. can. Has a beige/orange color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of caramel malts, some melon. Taste is the same. Malts up front, light melon, bitter at the finish. Feels medium/full bodied in the mouth and overall is a bit malt heavy for the style, but is an enjoyable beer.

Dark golden color, with a citrus smell and taste initially. Aftertaste is spicy. Feels pretty crisp, "quaffable"! Interesting that BA app listed this beer immediately when I brought up the beer menu. We are sitting at the brewery that makes it! Coincidence? Or does BA use my location .. cool either way.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a Sam Adams perfect pint.

A: Standard pour yields a 1.5 finger semi-fine white head with rather poor retention, fading quickly into a thin film atop the brew. Beer is a clear orangy-amber. Lacing is spotty but with good stick.

S: Aroma of musty orange, grapefruit, cane sugar, and a weird faint coffee. All are rather muddled and dull and it takes a bit of effort to really get the smell here.

T: Sweet citrus, caramel, brown sugar, spicy coarse hops, slightly boozy towards the middle as the hops come in for just a second and fade quickly. A bit wheaty which is weird and a bit tart on the finish which is clean. Trace residue of hoppiness remains but not much left after the swallow here.

M: Light bodied, coarse, and highly carbonated. Watery in the mouth and has little substance. Finish is messy but quick, leaving a stained feeling in the mouth that isn't apparent, but builds throughout the beer.

D: Not bad as I tend to really like wheat beers but this is a bit off for an IPA. Barely a nose and not enough hops or malts. Everything about this beer just says "meh". This is a real middle of the road IPA that might be worth a shot if you're looking for something different, but not worth going out of your way for.

Color: Orange light red

Smell: Very faint lemon, stale bread, very little smell

Appearance: Pours golden orange, white head that disapates quickly, No lacing, big popping bubbles

Taste: Tastes more like Fat Tire or Sam Adams Lager than an American IPA. However, it does have a faint citrus hop taste.

Mouthfeel: This is the strongpoint of this beer. Rich full bodided carbonation gives way to smokey creamy swallow. This beer awesome with a good old homemade sandwich.
