KiwiKiwi
Notes: Kiwi is a fruited sour ale that showcases the distinct fruit characteristics of fresh kiwis melded with a mildly tart base of sour blonde ale. Hazy and golden/straw in appearance upon pouring, with zesty amounts of carbonation. Its fresh kiwi and tropical aromas meld with floral and wine-like notes. Wonderful rich kiwi flavors follow in the taste, accompanied by refreshing tartness. The finish is dry, with mouthwatering tanginess and kiwi flavor.

Just when you though you've seen it all- this, Kiwi Lambic! From a semi-rural brewery that has garnerred its reputation from the production of ordinary American-style ales, out springs a rustic and spot-on Belgian-style Lambic with the back sweetening of, all things, kiwi. How does this delicate fruit hold up to the sharply sour flavor of Lambic...?

With a pour that's typical of Belgian sours, the murky yellow-ish gold color seems to display the same tone and tenner as bruised pears. A dainty and delicate airy white head develops on the beer confidently, but quickly succumbs to the acidity of the beer quickly, and with little lace. Kiwi's low lying carbonation seems caught somewhere less zesty than Gueuze but not as still as traditional Lambic either.

Tart fruit, cider, and white wine aromas fill the nose with nearly the acidic tones expected from vinegars. Limes, mellons, under rippened berries, and crabapples give a glimpse into the slightly funky and estery mix. But the underlying wood notes of sandalwood, dry oak, and lighlty mossy scent carries an undeniable earthy tone to support the sharp fruit and acid.

Flavors begin to balance toward the fruity and sour notes that rise as limes early on but grow into the more finesse melon, kiwi, and papaya flavors late as the wheaty finish and aftertaste reveal a softer and more palatable element without impeeding drinkability. Slightly bitter, salty, and brine-like, the mid palate delivers a flavor that's interestingly similar to salt water taffy.

Perhaps closer to medium bodied than light bodied, especially when considering style parameters; but the beer retains a slightly richer malt body that provides a welcome buffer to the sharp acidity that pangs at the jaws. This creamier effect tampers the onslaught of acid until the palate acclimates and finishes with a moderately astringent feel and malty-dry finish and minimal alcohol warmth.

There's an overall clean, nearly all lactic sourness that commands the beer and shows restraint with the complexities of heavy must, horse hair, or mushroom earthiness- this all allows the actual kiwi to shine through the more aggressive sour flavors. Though the fruit flavor seems melon-like, I can also see the influence of kiwi playing a pronounced role in the flavor spread. Well done Upland, well done!

Had the privilege of having one of these at the Upland release with a select group of beer enthusiast. Seeing as how only 48 bottles made it out of the barrel this is without a doubt the rarest of the lambics released.
Drinkable right there with the other Lambics. very easy to drink and palette friendly. Some barn yard character as hold true with the others but this one has a distinctly different flavor. Sourness is kept to a minimum at this point but is there but will only increase over time as this bottle continues to age.
The fruit taste is not as present up front as it jumps out on your tongue after you swallow leaving a pleasant after taste. The oak is very present both in the nose and taste and it is very fresh.
I think these could use a little more age to really jump out both in sourness and flavor not in a bad way but in the best way!
Wish more of these could have made it through the barrel explosion but minus the 2 bottles I seen drank there are still 46 more bottles

The incredibly generous, master BA trader aasher sent this to me in one of our many trades. Upland's Kiwi was beer I'd thought I may never get a chance to try and am very thankful this bottle arrived. Big thanks and cheers to you, Al!

Bottle date: 12-6-10 / Batch 134-08

Pouring into a Cantillon flute. It's a slightly hazy light golden color. Very active, visible carbonation formed a thin, fizzy white head that was more reminiscent of soda or champagne than what you might typically see in your standard ales and lagers. When out of the light, the beer takes more of a light amber/orange hue.

A fruity essence (kiwi) perked to the surface first but was quickly overtaken by sour, lemon-rind tartness. Faint hay lying in the background. Slight peppery spice. Musty aromas make their way into the picture after the beer had some time to sit.

First sips yield an intriguing flavor mix of barnyard, vegetal/onion, and lemon zest. Kiwi fruit stakes a claim in the middle offering up a pleasant contrast to the initial lambic burst. Finish leaves a refreshing kiwi on the palette with a mildly tongue buckling tart/sourness.

Prickly carbonation and a light body on this. Not picking up any harsh/astringent characters.

Overall this one is a treat to drink. Great balance of sweet kiwi fruit alongside the tart/sour, musty and barnyard qualities expected from a lambic. Another great job by Upland and I look forward to cracking the remaining beers Al has kindly sent me.
