Wheat AleWheat Ale

Brewed by:
Upland Brewing Company
Indiana, United States

Style: Belgian Witbier

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Upland Wheat Ale is a classic rendition of the Belgian Witbier (white beer) style. We brew it with organic coriander and orange zest to be light on the tongue and refreshingly tart. In the tradition of the Belgian Wit style, Upland Wheat Ale is unfiltered, allowing suspended yeast to create a cloudy, golden appearance. This is an everyday, every meal type of beer. It’s comforting on a cold winter day and refreshing on a hot summer evening. That’s why it’s one of our most popular brews and a flagship beer of our brewery.

12 ounce bottle from Big Red Liquors in Terre Haute, Indiana. Bottled on dating notched onto the label. Rolld on its side to incorporate the yeast. Then pours cloudy and lemony, Near white head with some staying power and leaving ample strands of lace. More dull lemon in the nose, then typical yeasty, slightly nutty wheat notes. Fruity and pleasant. Decent summer quaffer.

Appearance: 1/4 inch inch head, cloudy, lemon yellow

Smell: cardamom, lemon, orange, and pepper

Taste: cardamom, lemon, orange, wheat, and pepper

Mouthfeel: crisp, sweet, and light bodied

Drinkability: This is an inoffensive, highly drinkable wheat ale. I could have 3 or 4 especially as the weather started to warm

Pours yellow golden. White fluffy 1 finger head. Smells of light fruit and wheat. Smells a bit yeasty as well. Tastes light, yeasty, wheaty, maybe a bit citrusy. Not much finish to it. The taste dies off. Mouthfeel is light. Good carbonation. Nice balance with the carbonation and the flavor. Overall, eh, drinkable, decent, good for the summer anyways. Why this is so popular in indiana I will never know, but I do think it is good.

12 oz with a bottling date of June, 2011.

Pours a straw yellow color with a significant amount of haze, almost like the color of a very unripe banana. A fluffy and aerated white head forms that seems to intend on sticking around for the long haul. As it slowly dyes down, it leaves a few traces of lacing here and there.

Nose releases aromas of spice and light fruit, predominately orange, apple, lemon and some banana. Scents of wheat are also detectable, laying a nice foundation for the beer's more upfront flavors.

Tastes a bit lighter than I thought it would have. All the flavors from the nose are there, although the wheat seems to be the center of attention on my palate. I know they were probably aiming for subtlety, but I wish the other players were more prosperous, as the wheat seems to be overwhelming everything else, pushing the herbal and spice elements into the background. Finishes up with a modest lemon twang that lingers around until the next sip.

Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied, exhibiting a crisp nature with adequate carbonation. A bit of creaminess to it that is prefect for the style, complementing it's semi-dry finish.

Overall, this is a pretty decent Wit. The potential is there, but the other flavors need to be more pronounced and not so subdued by the wheat backbone for it to achieve greatness.

Bottle via trade with GCurlow – thanks!

Pours a hazy yellow-gold color with a one-finger white head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of light malts with solid amounts of wheat twang. Also present are light and sweet spices and lighter amounts of floral hops.

Tastes similar to how it smells, though not as robust. Light malt flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by solid wheat flavors. Slight citrus hops come into play midway through the sip before being pushed aside by light spices. The spices fade out into a mildly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It’s got a nice thickness with moderate carbonation.

Drinkability is very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have a few more.

Overall I was pleasantly surprised by this beer – easy to drink and complex enough to keep things interesting. Worth a shot.

Had this beer on tap at Mo's Irish Pub in Noblesville,IN.

Served in a pint glass, the color was a hazy straw color with a fairly decent head. The beer has a unique smell that is a good mixture of wheat and corriander. The taste is consistent with the smell, orange peel, corriander and an almost nutty wheat flavor. The alcohol was very subtle and the beer was not too bitter. All in all this was a very drinkable beer.

A cloudy lemon yellow in the glass with a full finger of soft white head.
The head melts pretty quickly to just a small topping of white lace.

Aroma is very faint but has a touch of corriander, bread, and lemon.

Taste is immediately spicy with white pepper, corriander, and a light clove bite. I also get hints of cinnamon which is unusual in a wheat beer. Over everything is a nice biscuit type yeast flavor.

Aftertaste is mostly the clove and cinnamon...something I would expect more in a Winter Warmer than a summer refresher.

I thought it was about time I'd get to reviewing this beer. I had a friend who was enamored with this one and it is a decent offering. Appearance is is a pale golden color with a slight aroma of spices. Taste is very clean and slightly spicy and citrusy. This would be a very solid session beer. I would never turn this one down.

Just ok, not a great Weisbier. I'm a fan of wheat beers and this one is a bit flat and uninspired. Would still be nice on a hot summer day however....

A long time ago, I had this beer (courtesy of Ryan) served with an orange, and I loved it. Needless to say, I was anxious to try it again, minus the excess fruit.

Apparently, my tastes have changed a bit, though I still like this beer.

It poured a beautiful translucent yellow color with a thin, stark white head and a sweet, citrus aroma bubbling forth. The taste is light, sweet, soft, and fruity, with a crisp, wheat-dry finish and a peripheral floral or perfumy element and some other notes. Coriander? Orange? I don't know exactly, but this is pretty good--if a touch too sweet for me these days (maybe I'll try again next summer, when I'm wearing shorts instead of a coat and gloves).

Fresh and it shows bottle from Riley's in Madison. Pleasant spicey aroma. About three-eights of a retained head on cloudy golden.Lacey. initially a little sour-spicy and then bannana and malts kick in and the whole thing becomes quite tasty after a warm day. Drying finish, and as I find in almost all this brewery's beers, too much carbonation.

Pours a very pale golden-amber, but almost impenetrably opaque.

Nice white head, little to no lace.

Very nice and pleasant spicy citrus aroma. Seems a perfect light Summer sessioner.

Flavor is crisp, with a smooth lemon/orange character -- almost shandy-like.

A tasty and light drinker, and substantially better than a Blue Moon. I could enjoy some of these in warm weather with no complaints!

Appearance: Really light, thick yellow, almost white. Decent foam that gets cut by the orange slice.

Smell: A little bit of citrus, and that's about it.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Nice initial crispness. The orange cuts through the flavor a bit too much.

Drinkabilty: Refreshing.

Overall: Would like to try this without the orange.
