The Komodo Dragon is an ok attempt at a black ipa. The beer pours an opaque black with tan head that is leaving a lace. The scent is faint with a little bittering hop and slight espresso present. The taste is fairly well balanced and finishes slightly bitter. The roasted malt is more prevalent than any flavor of hop. The mouthfeel is lighter in body with smooth carbonation. Overall its ok...far cry from Stone's SSRA.

Tastes strange, malt and orange peel with a nasty selection of hops.

A good representation of the style, insofar as hop-flavor is present but bitterness is attenuated by the brew's malt backbone, but nothing to write home about.

On tap at Upland Carmel.
1/2 finger of kaki foam covered a pitch black pint of beer.
Smell is a good mix of piney hops and roasted malt. I get bits of earthiness and citrus peel and possibly some smoke.
Taste is lots of roasted malts and pine. Slight orange peel bitterness. I think the flavor profile is exactly what Upland was going for. Having had the Dragon Fly IPA I can say this has that charicter with roasted malt addition. Nicely done
Very drinkable beer. Medium mouth feel with good balance. Abv is average for the style as well. Slightly chewy and easily coats the mouth. A beer you can sip or have a few of.

A - Dark black-brown, mostly opaque, and a light tan head with minimal lacing.
S - Hops pine and acid, bitterness. Malt hints.
T - Bright hit of acidity, and roasted malts underlining pine and mild citrus zest.
M - A bit of drying in the close, a touch of crunchiness.
O - A decent black IPA, but not as assured as some. Drinkable.

Dark brown with fluffy off-white head. Good dank hops smell--not super fruity like Lagunitas Nighttime, but pretty nice nonetheless. Roast, chary-y malts with a little hoppy bitterness. Pretty good, but there are better black IPAs out there.
